1Nella città di Iconio, Paolo e Barnaba entrarono insieme nella sinagoga e predicarono con tale convinzione che molti, sia Giudei che pagani, credettero nel Signore Gesù.
2Ma gli altri Giudei, quelli che non avevano voluto credere, convinsero dei pagani a mettersi contro Paolo e Barnaba, facendo ogni tipo di maldicenza sul loro conto. 3Tuttavia, Paolo e Barnaba si fermarono in quella città per molto tempo e, senza paura, predicavano il Vangelo. Il Signore provò che il loro messaggio era divino dando loro il potere di compiere grandi miracoli.
4Ma la popolazione della città era divisa: alcuni stavano dalla parte dei capi giudei, altri invece da quella degli apostoli.
Guarigione dello storpio
5-6Quando, però, Paolo e Barnaba vennero a sapere che i pagani e i Giudei, coi loro capi, avevano intenzione di malmenarli e prenderli a sassate, scapparono nelle città della Licaonia, a Listra, poi a Derbe e nei dintorni; 7ed anche là predicarono il Vangelo.
8Mentre si trovarono a Listra, si imbatterono in un uomo paralizzato alle gambe dalla nascita, che stava sempre seduto e non aveva mai camminato in vita sua. 9Questʼuomo stava ad ascoltare Paolo che predicava. Paolo lo fissò negli occhi e sʼaccorse che aveva fede sufficiente per essere guarito. 10Allora esclamò ad alta voce: «Àlzati!» Lʼuomo balzò in piedi e cominciò a camminare!
11Quando i presenti videro ciò che Paolo aveva fatto, cominciarono a gridare nel loro dialetto: «Questi sono dèi, che hanno preso sembianze umane e sono scesi tra noi!» 12E dicevano che Barnaba doveva essere Giove, e Paolo, siccome era sempre il primo a parlare, Mercurio. 13Allora il sacerdote del tempio di Giove, che si trovava allʼentrata della città, portò delle ghirlande di fiori e, insieme alla folla, si preparò a sacrificare dei tori in loro onore, davanti alle porte della città.
14Quando Paolo e Barnaba sʼaccorsero di ciò che stava accadendo, dalla disperazione si stracciarono i vestiti e, correndo fra la gente, cominciarono a gridare: 15«Uomini! Che state facendo? Noi siamo esseri umani, né più e né meno come voi! Siamo venuti per portarvi il Vangelo. Smettetela di adorare queste cose senza valore e pregate, invece, il Dio vivente, che ha fatto il cielo, la terra e il mare e tutto ciò che esiste. 16Nei tempi passati, Dio ha lasciato che ogni popolo seguisse la propria strada, 17anche se non ha mai smesso di farsi conoscere, facendovi del bene. Infatti vi ha mandato pioggia dal cielo e dei buoni raccolti, così avete avuto serenità e cibo in abbondanza!»
18Nonostante le parole convincenti, Paolo e Barnaba riuscirono a malapena ad impedire che la popolazione offrisse loro un sacrificio!
19Eppure, soltanto pochi giorni dopo, alcuni Giudei di Antiochia e di Iconio tanto fecero, che convinsero quella stessa gente a lapidare Paolo, che fu poi trascinato fuori dalla città, apparentemente morto. 20Ma, quando i discepoli gli si strinsero attorno, Paolo si rialzò e rientrò in città.
Il giorno dopo, Paolo partì con Barnaba per Derbe. 21Dopo aver predicato la Buona Notizia in quella città e aver fatto molti discepoli, tornarono di nuovo a Listra, Iconio ed Antiochia: 22dappertutto infondevano coraggio ai credenti e li esortavano a perseverare nella fede, ricordando loro che si entra nel Regno di Dio attraverso molte tribolazioni. 23Poi Paolo e Barnaba fecero eleggere degli anziani per ogni chiesa, e dopo aver pregato e digiunato, li raccomandarono alla protezione del Signore, in cui avevano creduto.
24Quindi, attraverso la Pisidia, tornarono in Panfilia. 25Predicarono di nuovo a Perge, e proseguirono per Attalia.
26Infine, tornarono per mare ad Antiochia, da dove erano partiti, dopo essere stati raccomandati a Dio, per il lavoro che avevano appena finito.
27Appena arrivati, riunirono i credenti e raccontarono del loro viaggio e come Dio avesse dato anche ai pagani la possibilità di credere. 28E restarono con i credenti di Antiochia per un bel poʼ di tempo.
In Iconium
1At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed. 2But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. 3So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders. 4The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles. 5There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews, together with their leaders, to ill-treat them and stone them. 6But they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country, 7where they continued to preach the gospel.
In Lystra and Derbe
8In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth and had never walked. 9He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed 10and called out, ‘Stand up on your feet!’ At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.
11When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, ‘The gods have come down to us in human form!’ 12Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker. 13The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.
14But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: 15‘Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human, like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them. 16In the past, he let all nations go their own way. 17Yet he has not left himself without testimony: he has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.’ 18Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.
19Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. 20But after the disciples had gathered round him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.
The return to Antioch in Syria
21They preached the gospel in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, 22strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. ‘We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,’ they said. 23Paul and Barnabas appointed elders14:23 Or Barnabas ordained elders; or Barnabas had elders elected for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust. 24After going through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia, 25and when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.
26From Attalia they sailed back to Antioch, where they had been committed to the grace of God for the work they had now completed. 27On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles. 28And they stayed there a long time with the disciples.
