La generosità dei Macedoni
1Ora, fratelli, voglio raccontarvi ciò che Dio, nella sua grazia, ha fatto per le chiese della Macedonia.
2Nonostante abbiano dovuto superare molti dispiaceri ed affrontare momenti difficili, nonostante la loro estrema povertà, quei fratelli hanno conservato una grande serenità, col risultato di poter donare agli altri generosamente. 3Io stesso posso testimoniare che hanno offerto volentieri il loro aiuto, non soltanto secondo le loro responsabilità, ma hanno fatto anche molto di più. 4Con molta insistenza ci hanno pregato di prendere il denaro, per poter partecipare anche loro alla gioia di aiutare i cristiani di Gerusalemme. 5Devo dire che sono andati oltre le nostre più alte speranze, perché, prima di tutto si sono dati al Signore, poi, per ubbidire alla volontà di Dio, si sono messi a nostra disposizione. 6Erano così entusiasti della cosa, che abbiamo pregato Tito, che già una volta vi ha incoraggiato a fare la vostra offerta, di venire a chiedervi di fare fino in fondo la vostra parte in questa opera di carità. 7Visto che vi distinguete in molte cose nella predicazione, nella conoscenza, nellʼentusiasmo e nellʼamore verso di noi, cercate, allora, di essere i primi anche in questʼopera di carità. 8Non lo dico per darvi un ordine; ma, portandovi lʼesempio degli altri, vorrei mettere alla prova la sincerità del vostro amore.
9Voi conoscete, infatti, la generosità del nostro Signore Gesù Cristo che, per amor vostro, lui che era ricco, divenne povero, perché, per mezzo della sua povertà, voi poteste diventare ricchi.
10Questo che vi do è dunque un semplice consiglio, e a voi non occorre di più, mi limito a suggerirvi di portare a termine ciò che avete cominciato un anno fa, visto che siete stati voi i primi, non solo a proporre questa idea, ma anche a cominciare qualcosa di concreto. 11Dopo aver cominciato con tanto entusiasmo, con altrettanto entusiasmo cercate di portare in porto questo progetto, dando tutto ciò che potete secondo le vostre possibilità; così alla buona intenzione del principio corrisponderà una vostra azione concreta. 12Se ciò che offrite lo date volentieri, allora non importa quanto potete dare. Dio vuole che diate ciò che avete, non ciò che non avete.
13Qui non si tratta di far vivere gli altri nel lusso a vostre spese, ma è una questione dʼuguaglianza. 14Adesso come adesso voi avete il superfluo e potete aiutarli; in altri momenti potranno essere loro a venirvi in aiuto, dandovi quello di cui avete bisogno. In questo modo ognuno avrà il necessario. 15Vi ricordate ciò che le Scritture dicono in proposito?: «Chi aveva raccolto molto non ne ebbe di troppo, e chi aveva raccolto poco ne ebbe abbastanza». Perciò anche voi dovete dividere ciò che avete con quelli che ne hanno bisogno.
16Ringrazio il Signore di aver dato a Tito nei vostri confronti lo stesso interesse che provo io. 17Infatti, non solo ha accettato di buon grado il mio consiglio di venirvi a trovare di nuovo, ma, pieno di entusiasmo, è partito di sua spontanea volontà! 18Mando con lui anche un altro fratello, che è molto stimato in tutte le chiese per il suo servizio al Vangelo. 19Inoltre, questʼuomo è stato scelto dalle chiese per accompagnarmi a raccogliere le offerte per i credenti di Gerusalemme. Ciò glorificherà il Signore e dimostrerà la nostra buona volontà di aiutarci a vicenda. 20Viaggiando insieme eviteremo sospetti di qualsiasi genere, perché ci sta a cuore che nessuno abbia critiche da farci riguardo allʼamministrazione di queste forti somme. 21Infatti noi ci preoccupiamo di agire onestamente, non soltanto agli occhi del Signore, ma anche a quelli degli uomini. Ecco perché ci siamo organizzati in questo modo.
22Vi mando anche un altro fratello, di cui conosciamo lʼefficienza per nostra esperienza personale in diverse occasioni. Ora, dopo che gli ho parlato del vostro entusiasmo nellʼaiutare i fratelli, è più che mai interessato a venire per la gran fiducia che ha in voi.
23Se qualcuno vi chiedesse chi è Tito, dite che è mio amico e mio collaboratore fra voi; potete anche dire che gli altri due fratelli rappresentano le chiese di questo paese e sono veri cristiani che lavorano per la gloria di Cristo.
24Vi prego di dimostrare di fronte alle chiese che rappresentano, che li amate veramente.
Questo affetto proverà loro che ho ragione di essere orgoglioso di voi.
The collection for the Lord’s people
1And now, brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people. 5And they exceeded our expectations: they gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us. 6So we urged Titus, just as he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. 7But since you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you8:7 Some manuscripts and in your love for us – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.
8I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. 9For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.
10And here is my judgment about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so. 11Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. 12For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.
13Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, 15as it is written: ‘The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.’8:15 Exodus 16:18
Titus sent to receive the collection
16Thanks be to God, who put into the heart of Titus the same concern I have for you. 17For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and on his own initiative. 18And we are sending along with him the brother who is praised by all the churches for his service to the gospel. 19What is more, he was chosen by the churches to accompany us as we carry the offering, which we administer in order to honour the Lord himself and to show our eagerness to help. 20We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer this liberal gift. 21For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man.
22In addition, we are sending with them our brother who has often proved to us in many ways that he is zealous, and now even more so because of his great confidence in you. 23As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker among you; as for our brothers, they are representatives of the churches and an honour to Christ. 24Therefore show these men the proof of your love and the reason for our pride in you, so that the churches can see it.
