1Quando succederà tutto questo? Non cʼè bisogno che vi dica niente in proposito, cari fratelli, 2perché sapete benissimo che nessuno lo sa. Il giorno del Signore verrà improvvisamente, come un ladro di notte. 3Quando la gente dirà: «Tutto va bene, cʼè pace e sicurezza dappertutto», allora ecco inaspettatamente la rovina, improvvisa come le doglie di una donna incinta. E non ci sarà scampo.
4Ma voi, cari fratelli, non siete allʼoscuro, per quanto riguarda queste cose, e quando verrà quel giorno, non vi coglierà di sorpresa come un ladro. 5Infatti, voi siete tutti figli della luce e del giorno. Noi credenti non facciamo parte delle tenebre e della notte. 6Perciò dobbiamo stare in guardia e non dormire come fanno gli altri; dobbiamo rimanere svegli e pronti per il suo ritorno! 7Di notte la gente dorme e di notte si ubriaca. 8Ma noi, che facciamo parte del giorno, dobbiamo restare sobri, protetti dalla corazza della fede e dellʼamore, e con lʼelmo della gioiosa speranza della salvezza.
9Perché Dio non ci ha destinati a subire il suo castigo, ma ci ha scelto per salvarci, grazie a ciò che ha fatto il nostro Signore, Gesù Cristo. 10Egli è morto per noi, per farci vivere sempre con lui, sia che noi siamo morti o vivi al momento del suo ritorno. 11Perciò, incoraggiatevi ed edificatevi a vicenda, come infatti state già facendo.

12Cari fratelli, vi preghiamo di avere riguardo per i rappresentanti della vostra chiesa, che lavorano tanto fra voi e vi mettono in guardia contro tutto ciò che è male. 13Teneteli in grande considerazione ed amateli con tutto il cuore, perché non si risparmiano per aiutarvi.
14E vivete in pace fra voi. Fratelli, correggete quelli che vivono male, confortate gli abbattuti, prendetevi cura di quelli che sono deboli e siate pazienti con tutti. 15Badate che nessuno ripaghi il male col male, ma cercate sempre di fare del bene, tanto fra voi che a tutti gli altri. 16Siate sempre contenti 17e continuate a pregare. 18Qualunque cosa accada, ringraziate sempre il Signore, perché è questo che Dio vuole da voi che appartenete a Gesù Cristo.
19Non ostacolate lʼazione dello Spirito Santo 20e non disprezzate quelli che profetizzano, 21ma controllate tutto ciò che viene detto per accertarvi che sia vero e, se lo è, accettatelo. 22Tenetevi alla larga da ogni specie di male. 23Che il Signore, che dona la pace, vi renda completamente puri e devoti a lui, e che tutto il vostro essere: spirito, anima e corpo, sia conservato forte e senza difetti fino al giorno del ritorno del nostro Signore, Gesù Cristo. 24Dio, che vi ha chiamati ad essere suoi figli, è fedele, e farà tutto questo per voi, come ha promesso. 25Fratelli, pregate per noi. 26Salutate per me con un bacio fraterno tutti gli altri credenti. 27Vi scongiuro, nel nome del Signore, di fare in modo che questa lettera sia letta a tutti i fratelli. 28La grazia del Signore nostro, Gesù Cristo, sia con voi tutti. The Day of the Lord Is Coming
1Brothers and sisters, we don’t have to write to you about times and dates. 2You know very well how the day of the Lord will come. It will come like a thief in the night. 3People will be saying that everything is peaceful and safe. Then suddenly they will be destroyed. It will happen like birth pains coming on a pregnant woman. None of the people will escape.
4Brothers and sisters, you are not in darkness. So that day should not surprise you as a thief would. 5All of you are children of the light. You are children of the day. We don’t belong to the night. We don’t belong to the darkness. 6So let us not be like the others. They are asleep. Instead, let us be wide awake and in full control of ourselves. 7Those who sleep, sleep at night. Those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8But we belong to the day. So let us control ourselves. Let us put on our chest the armor of faith and love. Let us put on the hope of salvation like a helmet. 9God didn’t choose us to receive his anger. He chose us to receive salvation because of what our Lord Jesus Christ has done. 10Jesus died for us. Some will be alive when he comes. Others will be dead. Either way, we will live together with him. 11So encourage one another with the hope you have. Build each other up. In fact, that’s what you are doing.
Final Teachings
12Brothers and sisters, we ask you to accept the godly leaders who work hard among you. They care for you in the Lord. They correct you. 13Have a lot of respect for them. Love them because of what they do. Live in peace with one another. 14Brothers and sisters, we are asking you to warn certain people. These people don’t want to work. Instead, they make trouble. We are also asking you to encourage those who have lost hope. Help those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. 15Make sure that no one pays back one wrong act with another. Instead, always try to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.
16Always be joyful. 17Never stop praying. 18Give thanks no matter what happens. God wants you to thank him because you believe in Christ Jesus.
19Don’t try to stop what the Holy Spirit is doing. 20Don’t treat prophecies as if they weren’t important. 21But test all prophecies. Hold on to what is good. 22Say no to every kind of evil.
23God is the God who gives peace. May he make you holy through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept free from blame. May you be without blame from now until our Lord Jesus Christ comes. 24The God who has chosen you is faithful. He will do all these things.
25Brothers and sisters, pray for us.
