برادران يوسف به مصر می‌روند
1يعقوب چون شنيد در مصر غله فراوان است، به پسرانش گفت: «چرا نشسته، به يكديگر نگاه می‌كنيد؟ 2شنيده‌ام در مصر غله فراوان است. قبل از اين كه همه از گرسنگی بميريم، برويد و از آنجا غله بخريد.»
3بنابراين ده برادر يوسف برای خريد غله به مصر رفتند. 4ولی يعقوب، بنيامين برادر تنی يوسف را همراه آنها نفرستاد، چون می‌ترسيد كه او را هم از دست بدهد. 5پس پسران يعقوب هم با ساير اشخاصی كه برای خريد غله از سرزمينهای مختلف به مصر می‌آمدند وارد آنجا شدند، زيرا شدت قحطی در كنعان مثل همه جای ديگر بود.
6چون يوسف حاكم مصر و مسئول فروش غله بود، برادرانش نزد او رفته در برابرش به خاک افتادند. 7يوسف فوراً آنها را شناخت، ولی وانمود كرد كه ايشان را نمی‌شناسد و با خشونت از آنها پرسيد: «از كجا آمده‌ايد؟»
گفتند: «از سرزمين كنعان برای خريد غله آمده‌ايم.»
8هر چند يوسف برادرانش را شناخت، اما ايشان او را نشناختند. 9در اين موقع يوسف خوابهايی را كه مدتها پيش در خانهٔ پدرش ديده بود، به خاطر آورد. او به آنها گفت: «شما جاسوس هستيد و برای بررسی سرزمين ما به اينجا آمده‌ايد.»
10آنها گفتند: «ای سَروَر ما، چنين نيست. ما برای خريد غله آمده‌ايم. 11همهٔ ما برادريم. ما اشخاص درستكاری هستيم و برای جاسوسی نيامده‌ايم.»
12يوسف گفت: «چرا، شما جاسوس هستيد و آمده‌ايد سرزمين ما را بررسی كنيد.»
13آنها عرض كردند: «ای سَروَر، ما دوازده برادريم و پدرمان در سرزمين كنعان است. برادر كوچک ما نزد پدرمان است و يكی از برادران ما هم مرده است.»
14يوسف گفت: «از كجا معلوم كه راست می‌گوييد؟ 15فقط در صورتی درستی حرفهای شما ثابت می‌شود كه برادر كوچكتان هم به اينجا بيايد و گرنه به حيات فرعون قسم كه اجازه نخواهم داد از مصر خارج شويد. 16يكی از شما برود و برادرتان را بياورد. بقيه را اينجا در زندان نگاه می‌دارم تا معلوم شود آنچه گفته‌ايد راست است يا نه. اگر دروغ گفته باشيد خواهم فهميد كه شما برای جاسوسی به اينجا آمده‌ايد.»
17آنگاه همهٔ آنها را به مدت سه روز به زندان انداخت. 18در روز سوم يوسف به ايشان گفت: «من مرد خداترسی هستم، پس آنچه به شما می‌گويم انجام دهيد و زنده بمانيد. 19اگر شما واقعاً افراد صادقی هستيد، يكی از شما در زندان بماند و بقيه با غله‌ای كه خريده‌ايد نزد خانواده‌های گرسنه خود برگرديد. 20ولی شما بايد برادر كوچک خود را نزد من بياوريد. به اين طريق به من ثابت خواهد شد كه راست گفته‌ايد و من شما را نخواهم كشت.» آنها اين شرط را پذيرفتند.
21آنگاه برادران به يكديگر گفتند: «همهٔ اين ناراحتی‌ها به خاطر آن است كه به برادر خود يوسف بدی كرديم و به التماس عاجزانهٔ او گوش نداديم.»
22رئوبين به آنها گفت: «آيا من به شما نگفتم اين كار را نكنيد؟ ولی حرف مرا قبول نكرديد. حالا بايد تاوان گناهمان را پس بدهيم.» 23البته آنها نمی‌دانستند كه يوسف سخنانشان را می‌فهمد، زيرا او توسط مترجم با ايشان صحبت می‌كرد. 24در اين موقع يوسف از نزد آنها به جايی خلوت رفت و بگريست. پس از مراجعت، شمعون را از ميان آنها انتخاب كرده، دستور داد در برابر چشمان برادرانش او را در بند نهند. 25آنگاه يوسف به نوكرانش دستور داد تا كيسه‌های آنها را از غله پُر كنند. ضمناً مخفيانه به نوكران خود گفت كه پولهايی را كه برادرانش برای خريد غله پرداخته بودند، در داخل كيسه‌هايشان بگذارند و توشهٔ سفر به آنها بدهند. پس آنها چنين كردند و 26برادران يوسف غله را بار الاغهای خود نموده، روانهٔ منزل خويش شدند.
27هنگام غروب آفتاب، وقتی كه برای استراحت توقف كردند، يكی از آنها كيسهٔ خود را باز كرد تا به الاغها خوراک بدهد و ديد پولی كه برای خريد غله پرداخته بود، در دهانهٔ كيسه است. 28پس به برادرانش گفت: «ببينيد! پولی را كه داده‌ام در كيسه‌ام گذارده‌اند.» از ترس لرزه بر اندام آنها افتاده، به يكديگر گفتند: «اين چه بلايی است كه خدا بر سر ما آورده است؟»
29-30ايشان به سرزمين كنعان نزد پدر خود يعقوب رفتند و آنچه را كه برايشان اتفاق افتاده بود برای او تعريف كرده، گفتند: «حاكم مصر با خشونت زياد با ما صحبت كرد و پنداشت كه ما جاسوس هستيم. 31به او گفتيم كه ما مردمانی درستكار هستيم و جاسوس نيستيم؛ 32ما دوازده برادريم از يک پدر. يكی از ما مرده و ديگری كه از همهٔ ما كوچكتر است نزد پدرمان در كنعان می‌باشد. 33حاكم مصر در جواب ما گفت: ”اگر راست می‌گوييد، يكی از شما نزد من به عنوان گروگان بماند و بقيه، غله‌ها را برداشته، نزد خانواده‌های گرسنهٔ خود برويد 34و برادر كوچک خود را نزد من آوريد. اگر چنين كنيد معلوم می‌شود كه راست می‌گوييد و جاسوس نيستيد. آنگاه من هم برادر شما را آزاد خواهم كرد و اجازه خواهم داد هر چند بار كه بخواهيد به مصر آمده، غلهٔ مورد نياز خود را خريداری كنيد.“»
35آنها وقتی كيسه‌های خود را باز كردند، ديدند پولهايی كه بابت خريد غله پرداخته بودند، داخل كيسه‌های غله است. آنها و پدرشان از اين پيشامد بسيار ترسيدند. 36يعقوب به ايشان گفت: «مرا بی‌اولاد كرديد. يوسف ديگر برنگشت، شمعون از دستم رفت و حالا می‌خواهيد بنيامين را هم از من جدا كنيد. چرا اين همه بدی بر من واقع می‌شود؟»
37آنگاه رئوبين به پدرش گفت: «تو بنيامين را به دست من بسپار. اگر او را نزد تو باز نياوردم دو پسرم را بكُش.»
38ولی يعقوب در جواب او گفت: «پسر من با شما به مصر نخواهد آمد؛ چون برادرش يوسف مرده و از فرزندان مادرش تنها او برای من باقی مانده است. اگر بلايی بر سرش بيايد پدر پيرتان از غصه خواهد مُرد.»
1Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another? 2And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.
3¶ And Joseph’s ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt. 4But Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him. 5And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan. 6And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph’s brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.
7And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.42.7 roughly…: Heb. hard things with them 8And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him. 9And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come. 10And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come. 11We are all one man’s sons; we are true men, thy servants are no spies. 12And he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come. 13And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not. 14And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies: 15Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither. 16Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies.42.16 kept…: Heb. bound 17And he put them all together into ward three days.42.17 put: Heb. gathered 18And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God: 19If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses: 20But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. 21¶ And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us. 22And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required. 23And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter.42.23 he spake…: Heb. an interpreter was between them 24And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes.
25¶ Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man’s money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way: and thus did he unto them. 26And they laded their asses with the corn, and departed thence. 27And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack’s mouth. 28And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us?42.28 failed…: Heb. went forth
29¶ And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that befell unto them; saying, 30The man, who is the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country.42.30 roughly…: Heb. with us hard things 31And we said unto him, We are true men; we are no spies: 32We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan. 33And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone: 34And bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffick in the land.
35¶ And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man’s bundle of money was in his sack: and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid. 36And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me. 37And Reuben spake unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again. 38And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
