خوابهای يوسف
1يعقوب بار ديگر در كنعان يعنی سرزمينی كه پدرش در آن اقامت كرده بود، ساكن شد. 2در اين زمان يوسف پسر يعقوب هفده ساله بود. او برادران ناتنی خود را كه فرزندان بلهه و زلفه كنيزان پدرش بودند، در چرانيدن گوسفندان پدرش كمک می‌كرد. يوسف كارهای ناپسندی را كه از آنان سر می‌زد به پدرش خبر می‌داد. 3يعقوب يوسف را بيش از ساير پسرانش دوست می‌داشت، زيرا يوسف در سالهای آخر عمرش به دنيا آمده بود، پس جامه‌ای رنگارنگ به يوسف داد. 4برادرانش متوجه شدند كه پدرشان او را بيشتر از آنها دوست می‌دارد؛ در نتيجه آنقدر از يوسف متنفر شدند كه نمی‌توانستند به نرمی با او سخن بگويند. 5يک شب يوسف خوابی ديد و آن را برای برادرانش شرح داد. اين موضوع باعث شد كينهٔ آنها نسبت به يوسف بيشتر شود.
6او به ايشان گفت: «گوش كنيد تا خوابی را كه ديده‌ام برای شما تعريف كنم. 7در خواب ديدم كه ما در مزرعه بافه‌ها را می‌بستيم. ناگاه بافهٔ من بر پا شد و ايستاد و بافه‌های شما دور بافهٔ من جمع شدند و به آن تعظيم كردند.»
8برادرانش به وی گفتند: «آيا می‌خواهی پادشاه شوی و بر ما سلطنت كنی!» پس خواب و سخنان يوسف بر كينه برادران او افزود.
9يوسف بار ديگر خوابی ديد و آن را برای برادرانش چنين تعريف كرد: «خواب ديدم كه آفتاب و ماه و يازده ستاره به من تعظيم می‌كردند.»
10اين بار خوابش را برای پدرش هم تعريف كرد؛ ولی پدرش او را سرزنش نموده، گفت: «اين چه خوابی است كه ديده‌ای؟ آيا واقعاً من و مادرت و برادرانت آمده، پيش تو تعظيم خواهيم كرد؟» 11برادرانش به او حسادت می‌كردند، ولی پدرش درباره خوابی كه يوسف ديده بود، می‌انديشيد.
فروخته شدن يوسف
12برادران يوسف گله‌های پدرشان را برای چرانيدن به شكيم برده بودند. 13-14يعقوب به يوسف گفت: «برادرانت در شكيم مشغول چرانيدن گله‌ها هستند. برو و ببين اوضاع چگونه است؛ آنگاه برگرد و به من خبر بده.»
يوسف اطاعت كرد و از دره حبرون به شكيم رفت. 15در آنجا شخصی به او برخورد و ديد كه وی در صحرا سرگردان است. او از يوسف پرسيد: «در جستجوی چه هستی؟»
16يوسف گفت: «در جستجوی برادران خود و گله‌هايشان می‌باشم. آيا تو آنها را ديده‌ای؟»
17آن مرد پاسخ داد: «بلی، من آنها را ديدم كه از اينجا رفتند و شنيدم كه می‌گفتند به دوتان می‌روند.» پس يوسف به دوتان رفت و ايشان را در آنجا يافت. 18همين كه برادرانش از دور ديدند يوسف می‌آيد، تصميم گرفتند او را بكشند.
19-20آنها به يكديگر گفتند: «خواب بيننده بزرگ می‌آيد! بياييد او را بكشيم و در يكی از اين چاهها بيندازيم و به پدرمان بگوييم جانور درنده‌ای او را خورده است. آن وقت ببينيم خوابهايش چه می‌شوند.»
21-22اما رئوبين چون اين را شنيد، به اميد اين كه جان او را نجات بدهد، گفت: «او را نكشيم. خون او را نريزيم، بلكه وی را در اين چاه بيندازيم. با اين كار بدون اين كه به او دستی بزنيم خودش خواهد مرد.» (رئوبين در نظر داشت بعداً او را از چاه بيرون آورد و نزد پدرش بازگرداند.)
23به محض اين كه يوسف نزد برادرانش رسيد، آنها بر او هجوم برده، جامهٔ رنگارنگی را كه پدرشان به او داده بود، از تنش بيرون آوردند. 24سپس او را در چاهی كه آب نداشت انداختند 25و خودشان مشغول خوردن غذا شدند. ناگاه از دور كاروان شتری را ديدند كه به طرف ايشان می‌آيد. آنها تاجران اسماعيلی بودند كه كتيرا و ادويه از جلعاد به مصر می‌بردند.
26-27يهودا به سايرين گفت: «نگاه كنيد، كاروان اسماعيليان می‌آيد. بياييد يوسف را به آنها بفروشيم. كُشتن او و مخفی كردن اين موضوع چه نفعی برای ما دارد؟ به هر حال او برادر ماست؛ نبايد به دست ما كشته شود.» برادرانش با پيشنهاد او موافقت كردند.
28وقتی تاجران رسيدند، برادران يوسف او را از چاه بيرون آورده، به بيست سكه نقره به آنها فروختند. آنها هم يوسف را با خود به مصر بردند. 29رئوبين كه هنگام آمدن كاروان در آنجا نبود، وقتی به سر چاه آمد و ديد كه يوسف در چاه نيست، از شدت ناراحتی جامهٔ خود را چاک زد. 30آنگاه نزد برادرانش آمده، به آنها گفت: «يوسف را برده‌اند و من نمی‌دانم كجا به دنبالش بروم؟»
31پس برادرانش بزی را سر بريده جامه زيبای يوسف را به خون بز آغشته نمودند. 32سپس جامهٔ آغشته به خون را نزد يعقوب برده، گفتند: «آيا اين همان جامه يوسف نيست؟ آن را در صحرا يافته‌ايم.»
33يعقوب آن را شناخت و فرياد زد: «آری، اين جامه پسرم است. حتماً جانور درنده‌ای او را دريده و خورده است.»
34آنگاه يعقوب جامهٔ خود را پاره كرده، پلاس پوشيد و روزهای زيادی برای پسرش ماتم گرفت. 35تمامی اهل خانواده‌اش سعی كردند وی را دلداری دهند، ولی سودی نداشت. او می‌گفت: «تا روز مرگم غم يوسف را نمی‌توانم فراموش كنم.» و همچنان از غم فرزندش می‌گريست.
36اما تاجران پس از اين كه به مصر رسيدند، يوسف را به فوطيفار، يكی از افسران فرعون فروختند. فوطيفار رئيس محافظان دربار بود.

5¶ And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. 6And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: 7For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. 8And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
9¶ And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me. 10And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? 11And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.
12¶ And his brethren went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem. 13And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I. 14And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.37.14 see…: Heb. see the peace of thy brethren, etc.
15¶ And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou? 16And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks. 17And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan. 18And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. 19And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.37.19 dreamer: Heb. master of dreams 20Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams. 21And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him. 22And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.
23¶ And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;37.23 colours: or, pieces 24And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. 25And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. 26And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood? 27Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.37.27 were…: Heb. hearkened 28Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.
29¶ And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes. 30And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?
31And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; 32And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no. 33And he knew it, and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces. 34And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days. 35And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning.
