Os construtores das muralhas
1Então Eliasibe, o sumo sacerdote, e os outros sacerdotes reconstruíram as muralhas, até à torre dos Cem e à torre de Hananel. Seguidamente, refizeram a porta das Ovelhas; aplicaram-lhe os batentes e consagraram-na. 2Homens da cidade de Jericó trabalharam ao seu lado; tiveram também o apoio de uma equipa de trabalhadores chefiada por Zacur, filho de Imri.
3A porta do Peixe foi reconstruída pelos filhos de Senaá, que fizeram tudo: prepararam a madeira, aplicaram as portas, fizeram as dobradiças e as fechaduras. 4Meremote, filho de Urias, filho de Coz, ocupou-se da secção da muralha a seguir; mais à frente, trabalharam Mesulão, filho de Berequias, filho de Mesezabel e Zadoque, filho de Baaná. 5Tiveram também a seu lado os homens de Tecoa; os seus chefes, porém, não estavam dispostos a empenhar-se neste trabalho.
6A porta Velha foi reparada por Joiada, filho de Paseia, e por Mesulão, filho de Besodeias. Prepararam a madeira e colocaram as portas com os gonzos e as fechaduras. 7Na secção a seguir estavam Melatias de Gibeão, Jadom de Meronote e homens de Gibeão e de Mizpá, cidadãos desta província. 8Uziel, filho de Haraías, que era ourives, e Hananias, um fabricante de perfumes, também trabalharam nas muralhas, separadamente. Não foi preciso fazerem-se reparações no sector que ia dali até ao muro Largo. 9Refaías, filho de Hur, administrador de metade do distrito de Jerusalém, também participou nos trabalhos na sua zona. 10Jedaías, filho de Harumafe, reconstruiu a parte do muro que ficava junto à sua casa e mais ao lado trabalhou Hatus, filho de Hasabneias. 11A seguir, estavam Malquias, filho de Harim, e Hassube, filho de Paate-Moabe, que se ocuparam da torre dos Fornos e de uma secção adjacente da muralha. 12Salum, filho de Haloés, e as suas filhas repararam a parte seguinte; Salum era o administrador da outra metade do distrito de Jerusalém.
13O povo de Zanoa, chefiado por Hanum, refez a porta do vale, levantou os batentes, colocou os ferrolhos e as dobradiças; além disso, trabalharam também na secção de 500 metros até à porta do Monturo.
14Esta última foi reparada por Malquias, filho de Recabe, administrador do bairro de Bete-Haquerem; tal como com nas outras, ocuparam-se do madeiramento, das ferragens e sua aplicação.
15A porta da Fonte ficou a cargo de Salum, filho de Col-Hoze, administrador do bairro de Mizpá; este refez todo o emadeiramento e recolocou as portas, com as respetivas ferragens. Depois aplicou-se na muralha que vai do tanque de Siloé até ao jardim do rei e nos degraus que descem da Cidade de David. 16A seguir, estava Neemias, filho de Azbuque, administrador de metade do bairro de Bete-Zur; reconstruiu até diante do cemitério real, até ao reservatório de água e até à casa dos valentes guerreiros.
17Vinha depois um grupo de levitas que trabalhavam sob o controlo de Reum, filho de Bani. Hasabias, administrador de metade do bairro de Queila, reedificou o muro da zona de território de que era responsável. 18Seguiam-se os seus irmãos, atuando sob as ordens de Bavai, filho de Henadade, administrador da outra metade do bairro de Queila. 19Os operários que vinham a seguir eram liderados por Ezer, filho de Jesua, administrador da outra parte de Mizpá; estes trabalharam igualmente na parte da muralha defronte da subida para a casa das armas, onde a parede faz uma esquina. 20Logo após, aplicou-se com grande ardor na reconstrução Baruque, filho de Zacai, a partir da esquina da muralha e até à casa de Eliasibe, o sumo sacerdote. 21Meremote, filho de Urias e neto de Coz, reparou uma secção da muralha que ia do ponto oposto à porta da casa de Eliasibe até junto da mesma casa.
22A seguir, estavam os sacerdotes vindos das campinas fora da cidade. 23Benjamim, Hassube e Azarias, filho de Maaseias e neto de Ananias, trabalharam nas partes que ficavam mesmo junto às suas próprias casas. 24Vinha depois Binuí, filho de Henadade, que se encarregou da secção que ia da casa de Azarias até ao canto seguinte. 25Palal, filho de Uzai, responsabilizou-se pela obra, desde o canto até à base da torre superior da casa real, junto ao pátio da prisão. A seguir vinha Pedaías, filho de Parós. 26Os ajudantes que davam assistência em trabalhos no templo e que viviam em Ofel3.26 Ofel era uma citadela na colina de Jerusalém. reconstruíram a muralha até defronte da porta da Água, para o leste, e até à torre Alta. 27Depois seguiam-se os tecoítas, que repararam a secção oposta à torre do Castelo e por cima do muro de Ofel.
28Os sacerdotes encarregaram-se da parte após a porta dos Cavalos, cada um refazendo a parte imediatamente oposta à sua casa. 29Zadoque, filho de Imer, também reconstruiu a parte junto à sua habitação; depois dele estava Semaías, filho de Secanias, o porteiro da porta Oriental. 30Logo após, estavam Hananias, filho de Selemias, Hanum, o sexto filho de Zalafe, e Mesulão, filho de Berequias, que reconstruíram junto às casas que habitavam. 31Malquias, um dos ourives, ocupou-se da secção que ia até à morada dos auxiliares do templo e dos comerciantes, defronte da porta da Inspeção, até à câmara superior, junto ao canto da muralha. 32Os outros ourives e comerciantes completaram a muralha desde esse canto até à porta das Ovelhas.
Builders of the Wall
1Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests went to work and rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They dedicated it and set its doors in place, building as far as the Tower of the Hundred, which they dedicated, and as far as the Tower of Hananel. 2The men of Jericho built the adjoining section, and Zakkur son of Imri built next to them.
3The Fish Gate was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah. They laid its beams and put its doors and bolts and bars in place. 4Meremoth son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, repaired the next section. Next to him Meshullam son of Berekiah, the son of Meshezabel, made repairs, and next to him Zadok son of Baana also made repairs. 5The next section was repaired by the men of Tekoa, but their nobles would not put their shoulders to the work under their supervisors.3:5 Or their Lord or the governor
6The Jeshanah3:6 Or Old Gate was repaired by Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah. They laid its beams and put its doors with their bolts and bars in place. 7Next to them, repairs were made by men from Gibeon and Mizpah—Melatiah of Gibeon and Jadon of Meronoth—places under the authority of the governor of Trans-Euphrates. 8Uzziel son of Harhaiah, one of the goldsmiths, repaired the next section; and Hananiah, one of the perfume-makers, made repairs next to that. They restored Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall. 9Rephaiah son of Hur, ruler of a half-district of Jerusalem, repaired the next section. 10Adjoining this, Jedaiah son of Harumaph made repairs opposite his house, and Hattush son of Hashabneiah made repairs next to him. 11Malkijah son of Harim and Hasshub son of Pahath-Moab repaired another section and the Tower of the Ovens. 12Shallum son of Hallohesh, ruler of a half-district of Jerusalem, repaired the next section with the help of his daughters.
13The Valley Gate was repaired by Hanun and the residents of Zanoah. They rebuilt it and put its doors with their bolts and bars in place. They also repaired a thousand cubits3:13 That is, about 1,500 feet or about 450 meters of the wall as far as the Dung Gate.
14The Dung Gate was repaired by Malkijah son of Rekab, ruler of the district of Beth Hakkerem. He rebuilt it and put its doors with their bolts and bars in place.
15The Fountain Gate was repaired by Shallun son of Kol-Hozeh, ruler of the district of Mizpah. He rebuilt it, roofing it over and putting its doors and bolts and bars in place. He also repaired the wall of the Pool of Siloam,3:15 Hebrew Shelah, a variant of Shiloah, that is, Siloam by the King’s Garden, as far as the steps going down from the City of David. 16Beyond him, Nehemiah son of Azbuk, ruler of a half-district of Beth Zur, made repairs up to a point opposite the tombs3:16 Hebrew; Septuagint, some Vulgate manuscripts and Syriac tomb of David, as far as the artificial pool and the House of the Heroes.
17Next to him, the repairs were made by the Levites under Rehum son of Bani. Beside him, Hashabiah, ruler of half the district of Keilah, carried out repairs for his district. 18Next to him, the repairs were made by their fellow Levites under Binnui3:18 Two Hebrew manuscripts and Syriac (see also Septuagint and verse 24); most Hebrew manuscripts Bavvai son of Henadad, ruler of the other half-district of Keilah. 19Next to him, Ezer son of Jeshua, ruler of Mizpah, repaired another section, from a point facing the ascent to the armory as far as the angle of the wall. 20Next to him, Baruch son of Zabbai zealously repaired another section, from the angle to the entrance of the house of Eliashib the high priest. 21Next to him, Meremoth son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, repaired another section, from the entrance of Eliashib’s house to the end of it.
22The repairs next to him were made by the priests from the surrounding region. 23Beyond them, Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs in front of their house; and next to them, Azariah son of Maaseiah, the son of Ananiah, made repairs beside his house. 24Next to him, Binnui son of Henadad repaired another section, from Azariah’s house to the angle and the corner, 25and Palal son of Uzai worked opposite the angle and the tower projecting from the upper palace near the court of the guard. Next to him, Pedaiah son of Parosh 26and the temple servants living on the hill of Ophel made repairs up to a point opposite the Water Gate toward the east and the projecting tower. 27Next to them, the men of Tekoa repaired another section, from the great projecting tower to the wall of Ophel.
28Above the Horse Gate, the priests made repairs, each in front of his own house. 29Next to them, Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his house. Next to him, Shemaiah son of Shekaniah, the guard at the East Gate, made repairs. 30Next to him, Hananiah son of Shelemiah, and Hanun, the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. Next to them, Meshullam son of Berekiah made repairs opposite his living quarters. 31Next to him, Malkijah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the house of the temple servants and the merchants, opposite the Inspection Gate, and as far as the room above the corner; 32and between the room above the corner and the Sheep Gate the goldsmiths and merchants made repairs.
