O fim de Nínive
1Nínive, chegou o teu fim! Estás já rodeado pelos exércitos inimigos! Soa o alarme! Fortalece as muralhas! Reforça as defesas e mantém uma vigilância apertada sobre todos os movimentos das forças inimigas que se preparam para o ataque. 2O Senhor restaurará a glória dos descendentes de Jacob, do povo de Israel, que os inimigos saquearam e deixaram como uma videira sem os seus ramos.
3Os escudos dos seus valentes guerreiros ficarão vermelhos. O ataque começa. Reparem nos seus uniformes escarlates! Vejam os seus carros cintilantes, avançando lado a lado, puxados por fogosos cavalos! 4Os teus próprios carros correm velozmente pelas ruas e praças da cidade, chispando faíscas e raios como tochas.
5O rei grita pelos seus oficiais que tropeçam na corrida em direção às muralhas, para reforçar as defesas. 6Mas é demasiado tarde! As portas do rio estão abertas! O inimigo já entrou e todo o palácio é destruído.
7A rainha de Nínive é trazida para as ruas, despida e levada como escrava, com as suas aias chorando atrás. Ouçam-na lamentando-se, gemendo como pombas, batendo no peito! 8Nínive é como um tanque esvaziando água. Os seus soldados fogem, abandonando-a; a cidade não pode retê-los. “Parem! Parem!”, gritam-lhes. Mas eles correm ainda mais.
9Saqueiem a prata! Saqueiem o ouro! Os tesouros parecem não ter fim! A sua vasta, imensa riqueza é toda levada. 10Em breve a cidade torna-se escombros. Os corações derretem-se de medo. Tremem os joelhos. O povo fica desfalecido, pálido, cambaleante.
11Onde está agora essa grande Nínive, o leão das nações, cheia de combatividade e de ousadia, onde até mesmo os velhos e os fracos, tal como os jovens e os meninos, viviam em segurança? 12Ó Nínive, sim, eras como um leão! Esmagavas os inimigos para dares de comer aos teus filhos e às tuas mulheres; enchias a cidade e as casas com mercadorias e com escravos.
13“Eis que estou contra ti, diz o Senhor dos exércitos. Queimarei os teus carros de combate. Os teus combatentes serão passados à espada. Arrancarei da terra a tua presa e não mais se ouvirá a voz dos teus mensageiros.”

11Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feedingplace of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s whelp, and none made them afraid? 12The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin. 13Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.
