Rúben e Gad ficam aquém do Jordão
(Dt 3.12-20)
1Quando Israel chegou à terra de Jazer e à terra de Gileade, as tribos de Rúben e de Gad, que tinham grandes rebanhos de ovelhas, deram-se conta de como aquela região era ótima para o gado. 2Por isso, vieram ter com Moisés, com o sacerdote Eleazar e com os chefes das outras tribos e disseram-lhes: 3-4“O Senhor usou-nos para destruir as populações de toda esta zona; Atarote, Dibom, Jazer, Ninra, Hesbom, Eleale, Sebã, Nebo e Beom. Trata-se de uma região belíssima para criar gado e para os rebanhos pastarem. 5Pedimos pois que nos deixem ficar aqui com esta terra como a parte que nos caberia na partilha geral e não passaremos para além do Jordão.”
6“Ficariam aqui descansados, enquanto os vossos irmãos continuavam a lutar no outro lado do rio?”, perguntou Moisés. 7“Assim estão a desencorajar o resto do povo a passar para a margem de lá, para a terra que o Senhor lhes deu! 8Isso é o mesmo que fizeram os vossos pais, quando os mandei de Cades-Barneia para observarem secretamente a terra. 9Quando regressaram, depois de terem passado pelo vale de Escol, desanimaram o povo, levando-o a desistir de entrar na terra prometida. 10A ira do Senhor ardeu contra eles e jurou então 11que todos os que tinham sido tirados do Egito, com mais de 20 anos, nunca haveriam de ver a terra que prometera a Abraão, a Isaque e a Jacob, visto que recusaram obedecer-lhe. 12As únicas exceções foram Calebe, filho de Jefoné, o quenezeu, e Josué, filho de Num, porque persistiram em seguir o Senhor com todo o seu coração.
13Assim, o Senhor fez-nos vaguear dum lado para o outro no deserto, durante 40 anos, até que toda aquela geração que praticou o mal morresse. 14Agora aqui estão vocês, um bando de pecadores, fazendo exatamente a mesma coisa, seguindo o exemplo dos vossos antepassados, aumentando por isso, a ira do Senhor sobre Israel. 15Se recusarem dessa forma segui-lo, isso fará ficar todo o povo ainda por mais tempo no deserto, e serão vocês os responsáveis pela destruição do seu povo e por terem trazido tamanha catástrofe sobre esta nação inteira!”
16“De maneira nenhuma!”, esclareceram eles. “A nossa intenção é construir currais e estábulos para o nosso gado e cidades para as nossas crianças; 17quanto a nós, estamos decididos a ir combater, à frente do povo de Israel, até que os tenhamos estabelecido definitivamente na terra que vão receber. Mas primeiro precisávamos edificar cidades fortificadas aqui para as nossas famílias, para deixá-las em segurança, na eventualidade de algum ataque das populações locais. 18Não voltaremos à nossa possessão até que o povo tenha ocupado aquilo que é seu por herança. 19Além disso, não precisamos de ter terra do outro lado do rio; basta-nos aquela com que ficamos aqui nesta zona oriental.”
20Moisés respondeu-lhes: “Pois sim, está bem, se fizerem tudo o que disseram, e se se armarem para a guerra do Senhor, 21levando as vossas tropas a atravessar o Jordão até que o Senhor tenha expulsado os seus inimigos; quando a terra estiver enfim subjugada na sua presença, 22não serão culpados perante o Senhor. Terão cumprido o vosso dever para com o Senhor e todo o resto do povo de Israel. Então a terra que está neste lado oriental será o domínio que o Senhor vos dá. 23Mas se não fizerem como prometeram, terão pecado contra o Senhor, e podem ter a certeza de que virão a receber o devido castigo. 24Vão então e construam as cidades de que precisam para as vossas famílias e os estábulos para os vossos rebanhos; façam tudo o que disseram.”
25“Faremos precisamente conforme nos mandas”, replicaram as gentes de Gad e de Rúben. 26“Os nossos filhos, mulheres, rebanhos e gado ficarão aqui nas cidades de Gileade. 27Mas todos os que nos alistarmos iremos lutar pelo Senhor, tal como nos mandaste.”
28Moisés deu assim a sua aprovação à pretensão deles, dizendo ao sacerdote Eleazar, a Josué e aos líderes de Israel: 29“Se todos os homens das tribos de Gad e de Rúben, que estão recrutados para as guerras do Senhor, forem convosco para além do Jordão, quando a terra for conquistada, deverão dar-lhe o território de Gileade; 30mas se recusarem, terão de aceitar aquela que lhes for distribuída, entre todos, no país de Canaã.”
31As tribos de Gad e de Rúben disseram de novo: “Estamos dispostos a fazer conforme o mandamento do Senhor; 32seguiremos todo o exército do Senhor até Canaã, mas depois a nossa terra será aqui deste lado do Jordão.”
33Assim, Moisés distribuiu o território do rei Siom dos amorreus e do rei Ogue de Basã, incluindo terras e cidades, às tribos de Gad e de Rúben, assim como à meia tribo de Manassés, filho de José.
34O povo de Gad construiu as seguintes cidades: Dibom, Atarote, Aroer, 35Atarote-Sofã, Jazer, Jogboa, 36Bete-Nimra, Bete-Harã; todas cidades fortificadas e com currais.
37O povo de Rúben edificou: Hesbom, Eleale, Quiriataim, 38Nebo, Baal-Meom e Sibma. Os israelitas mais tarde mudaram o nome de algumas cidades que tinham conquistado e reconstruído.
39Os descendentes de Maquir, filho de Manassés, foram à terra de Gileade e expulsaram os amorreus na zona que conquistaram. 40Por isso, Moisés deu também aos maquiritas terra em Gileade e passaram a viver ali. 41Os homens de Jair, outro agregado da tribo de Manassés, ocuparam igualmente muitas cidades de Gileade, e alterou-se o nome da sua área para Havote-Jair (Aldeias de Jair). 42Entretanto, um homem chamado Noba, à frente dum destacamento militar, foi a Quenate e conquistou-a, assim como as aldeias dos arredores, ocupando-as e dando àquele sítio o seu próprio nome.
The Tribes on the East Side of the Jordan River
1The tribes of Reuben and Gad had very large herds and flocks. They looked at the lands of Jazer and Gilead. They saw that those lands were just right for livestock. 2So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest. They also came to the leaders of the community. They said, 3“We have seen the cities of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah and Heshbon. We’ve seen Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon. 4All of them are in the land the Lord has brought under Israel’s control. This land is just right for livestock. And we have livestock. 5We hope you are pleased with us,” they continued. “If you are, please give us this land. Then it will belong to us. But don’t make us go across the Jordan River.”
6Moses spoke to the people of Gad and Reuben. He said, “Should the rest of us go to war while you stay here? 7The Lord has given the land of Canaan to the Israelites. So why would you want to keep them from going over into it? 8That’s what your fathers did. I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to check out the land. 9They went up to the Valley of Eshkol and looked at the land. Then they talked the Israelites out of entering the land the Lord had given them. 10The Lord’s anger was stirred up that day. So he made a promise. He said, 11‘Not one of those who were 20 years old or more when they came up out of Egypt will see the land. They have not followed me with their whole heart. I promised to give the land to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 12But not one of the people who came up out of Egypt will see the land except Caleb and Joshua. Caleb is the son of Jephunneh, the Kenizzite. And Joshua is the son of Nun. They will see the land. They followed the Lord with their whole heart.’ 13The Lord became very angry with Israel. He made them wander around in the desert for 40 years. They wandered until all the people who had done evil in his sight had died.
14“Now here you are, you bunch of sinners! You have taken the place of your fathers. And you are making the Lord even angrier with Israel. 15What if you turn away from following him? Then he’ll leave all these people in the desert again. And it will be your fault when they are destroyed.”
16Then they came up to Moses. They said, “We would like to build pens here for our livestock. We would also like to build cities for our women and children. 17But we will prepare ourselves for battle. We’re even ready to go ahead of the Israelites. We’ll march out with them until we’ve brought them to their place. While we’re gone, our women and children will live in cities that have high walls around them. That will keep them safe from the people living in this land. 18We won’t return to our homes until each of the Israelites has received their share of the land. 19We won’t receive any share with them on the west side of the Jordan River. We’ve already received our share here on the east side.”
20Then Moses said to them, “Do what you have promised to do. Get ready to fight for the Lord. 21Prepare yourselves and go across the Jordan River. Fight for the Lord until he has driven out his enemies in front of him. 22When the land is under the Lord’s control, you can come back here. Your duty to the Lord and Israel will be over. Then the Lord will give you this land as your own.
23“But what if you fail to do your duty? Then you will be sinning against the Lord. And you may be sure that your sin will be discovered. It will be brought out into the open. 24So build up cities for your women and children. Make sheep pens for your flocks. But do what you have promised to do.”
25The people of Gad and Reuben spoke to Moses. They said, “We will do just as you command. 26Our children and wives will remain here in the cities of Gilead. So will our flocks and herds. 27But we will prepare ourselves for battle. We’ll go across the Jordan River and fight for the Lord. We will do just as you have said.”
28Then Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest. He gave the same orders to Joshua, the son of Nun. He also spoke to the family leaders of the Israelite tribes. 29He said, “The men of Gad and Reuben must get ready for battle. They must go across the Jordan River with you. They must help you fight for the Lord. They must stay with you until the land has been brought under your control. If they do, you must give them the land of Gilead as their own. 30But what if they don’t get ready for battle? What if they don’t go across the Jordan with you? Then they must accept a share with you in Canaan.”
31The people of Gad and Reuben gave their answer. They said, “We will do what the Lord has said. 32We’ll get ready for battle. We’ll go across the Jordan into Canaan. We’ll fight for the Lord there. But the property we receive will be on this side of the Jordan River.”
33Then Moses gave their land to them. He gave it to the tribes of Gad and Reuben and half of the tribe of Manasseh. Manasseh was Joseph’s son. One part of that land had belonged to the kingdom of Sihon. He was the king of the Amorites. The other part had belonged to the kingdom of Og. He was the king of Bashan. Moses gave that whole land to those two and a half tribes. It included its cities and the territory around them.
34The people of Gad built up the cities of Dibon, Ataroth and Aroer. 35They built up Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, 36Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran. They built a high wall around each of those cities. They also built sheep pens for their flocks. 37The people of Reuben built up Heshbon, Elealeh and Kiriathaim. 38They also built up Nebo, Baal Meon and Sibmah. They gave new names to the cities they had built up.
39The people of Makir, the son of Manasseh, went to the land of Gilead. They captured it. They drove out the Amorites living there. 40So Moses gave Gilead to the people of Makir, the son of Manasseh. And they settled there. 41Jair was from the family line of Manasseh. Jair captured Gilead’s settlements. He called them Havvoth Jair. 42Nobah captured Kenath and the settlements around it. He named it after himself.
