João Batista prepara o caminho
(Mt 3.1-12; Lc 3.2-16; Jo 1.19-28)
1Aqui começa a boa nova de Jesus o Cristo, o Filho de Deus.
2No livro escrito pelo profeta Isaías, Deus anunciou a seu respeito:
“Envio o meu mensageiro diante de ti,
para preparar o caminho à tua frente.”1.2 Ml 3.1.
3“Este mensageiro é a voz gritando no deserto:
‘Façam um caminho direito para o Senhor.
Façam-lhe um caminho direito.’ ”1.3 Is 40.3.
4Este mensageiro foi João Batista, que apareceu no deserto a pregar que as pessoas deviam batizar-se, como sinal de se terem arrependido dos seus pecados, a fim de serem perdoadas. 5Gente de Jerusalém e de toda a Judeia ia até aos lugares afastados da Judeia para o ver e ouvir; e, quando confessavam os seus pecados, batizava-os no rio Jordão. 6A roupa dele era feita de pelo de camelo tecido e usava um cinto de cabedal; e alimentava-se de gafanhotos e mel silvestre. 7Este é um exemplo da sua pregação: “Em breve chegará alguém que é muito maior do que eu, tanto assim que nem sou digno de me ajoelhar para lhe descalçar as sandálias. 8Eu batizo-vos com água, mas ele vai batizar-vos com o Espírito Santo.”
O batismo e a tentação de Jesus
(Mt 3.13-17; Lc 3.21-22; Jo 1.32-34)
9Um dia, Jesus veio de Nazaré, na região da Galileia, e foi batizado por João no rio Jordão. 10No momento em que saía da água, viu os céus abertos e o Espírito Santo que descia sobre si, na forma de uma pomba. 11E uma voz do céu disse: “Tu és o meu Filho amado, em ti tenho grande prazer.”
Jesus é tentado
(Mt 4.1-11; Lc 4.1-15)
12Logo o Espírito Santo levou Jesus para o deserto. 13Ali, durante quarenta dias, acompanhado pelos animais do deserto, sofreu tentações de Satanás. E os anjos serviam-no.
A chamada dos primeiros discípulos
(Mt 4.12-22; Lc 4.14-15; 5.2-11)
14Mais tarde, depois de João ter sido preso pelo rei Herodes, Jesus foi para a Galileia, a fim de pregar as boas novas de Deus: 15“Chegou finalmente o tempo!”, anunciou ele. “O reino de Deus está próximo! Deixem os vossos pecados e creiam nesta boa nova!”
16Um dia, ia Jesus caminhando ao longo da costa do mar da Galileia, viu Simão e André, seu irmão, a pescar com uma rede, pois eram pescadores por ofício. 17Jesus chamou-os: “Venham e sigam-me. Farei de vocês pescadores de pessoas!” 18No mesmo instante, deixaram as redes e seguiram-no.
19Avançando um pouco mais, viu na praia os filhos de Zebedeu, Tiago e João, num barco a remendar as redes. 20Chamou-os também e logo o seguiram, deixando o seu pai Zebedeu no barco com os empregados.
Jesus expulsa demónios e cura doentes
(Mt 8.14-16; Lc 4.31-41)
21Jesus e os companheiros chegaram a Cafarnaum no sábado, foram à sinagoga e ali ensinava. 22As pessoas ficaram admiradas com o seu ensino, pois falava com autoridade, ao contrário dos especialistas na Lei.
23Achava-se ali presente um homem dominado por um espírito impuro, 24que começou a gritar: “Porque nos vens inquietar, Jesus de Nazaré? Vieste destruir-nos? Sei quem és: és o santo Filho de Deus!” 25Jesus, porém, impediu-o de falar. “Cala-te!”, disse ao demónio. “Sai dele!” 26O espírito impuro soltou um grito muito forte e, com uma convulsão violenta, deixou o homem.
27As pessoas ficaram todas tão pasmadas que se puseram a discutir o sucedido. “Que novo ensino será este, apresentado com autoridade?”, perguntavam. “Pois até os espíritos impuros lhe obedecem!” 28A notícia do que ele tinha feito depressa se espalhou por toda a região da Galileia.
29Quando saiu da sinagoga com os discípulos, foram a casa de Simão e André, e Tiago e João estavam com eles. 30A sogra de Simão estava deitada com febre e contaram-no a Jesus; 31e foi levantá-la da cama. Ao pegar-lhe na mão, a febre desapareceu e ela foi servi-lo.
32Ao cair da tarde, à hora do pôr-do-sol, trouxeram a Jesus todos os que sofriam e os possuídos de demónios. 33E toda a população da a cidade se juntou do lado de fora da porta a observar. 34E curou muitos que sofriam de várias doenças e expulsou os demónios. Mas não deixava os demónios falar, pois sabiam quem ele era.
Jesus ora e anuncia a boa nova
(Lc 4.42-44)
35Na manhã seguinte, levantou-se de madrugada e foi sozinho até um lugar deserto para orar. 36Mais tarde, Simão e os outros saíram à sua procura 37e disseram-lhe: “Toda a gente pergunta por ti.”
38Mas ele respondeu: “Devemos seguir também para outras localidades e apresentar ali a minha mensagem, pois foi para isso que vim.” 39Percorria, assim, toda a província da Galileia, pregando nas sinagogas e livrando muitos do poder dos demónios.
A cura dum homem leproso
(Mt 8.2-4; Lc 5.12-16)
40Um leproso chegou-se e ajoelhou-se, rogando-lhe: “Se quiseres, podes curar-me!”
41Então Jesus, cheio de compaixão e estendendo a mão, tocou-lhe e disse: “Sim, quero; sê curado!” 42Logo a lepra o deixou e o homem ficou curado.
43Então Jesus, falando com firmeza, despediu-o: 44“Presta atenção: não digas nada a ninguém. Vai apresentar-te ao sacerdote e leva contigo a oferta que Moisés estabeleceu para a cura, para que lhes sirva de testemunho.”
45Mas o homem começou a gritar pelo caminho a boa notícia de que estava curado. E tão grande foi a multidão que rodeou Jesus que em nenhuma região ou cidade podia entrar discretamente, vendo-se obrigado a ficar de fora, nos sítios isolados, onde de toda a parte vinha gente procurá-lo.
John the Baptist Prepares the Way
1This is the beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God. 2Long ago Isaiah the prophet wrote,
“I will send my messenger ahead of you.
He will prepare your way.” (Malachi 3:1)
3“A messenger is calling out in the desert,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord.
Make straight paths for him.’ ” (Isaiah 40:3)
4And so John the Baptist appeared in the desert. He preached that people should be baptized and turn away from their sins. Then God would forgive them. 5All the people from the countryside of Judea went out to him. All the people from Jerusalem went too. When they admitted they had sinned, John baptized them in the Jordan River. 6John wore clothes made out of camel’s hair. He had a leather belt around his waist. And he ate locusts and wild honey. 7Here is what John was preaching. “After me, there is someone coming who is more powerful than I am. I’m not good enough to bend down and untie his sandals. 8I baptize you with water. But he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Jesus Is Baptized and Tempted
9At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee. John baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. 10Jesus was coming up out of the water. Just then he saw heaven being torn open. Jesus saw the Holy Spirit coming down on him like a dove. 11A voice spoke to him from heaven. It said, “You are my Son, and I love you. I am very pleased with you.”
12At once the Holy Spirit sent Jesus out into the desert. 13He was in the desert 40 days. There Satan tempted him. The wild animals didn’t harm Jesus. Angels took care of him.
Jesus Preaches the Good News
14After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee. He preached the good news of God. 15“The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Turn away from your sins and believe the good news!”
Jesus Chooses His First Disciples
16One day Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee. There he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the lake. They were fishermen. 17“Come and follow me,” Jesus said. “I will send you out to fish for people.” 18At once they left their nets and followed him.
19Then Jesus walked a little farther. As he did, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat preparing their nets. 20Right away he called out to them. They left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men. Then they followed Jesus.
Jesus Drives Out an Evil Spirit
21Jesus and those with him went to Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue. There he began to teach. 22The people were amazed at his teaching. That’s because he taught them like one who had authority. He did not talk like the teachers of the law. 23Just then a man in their synagogue cried out. He was controlled by an evil spirit. He said, 24“What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are. You are the Holy One of God!”
25“Be quiet!” said Jesus firmly. “Come out of him!” 26The evil spirit shook the man wildly. Then it came out of him with a scream.
27All the people were amazed. So they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching! And with so much authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits, and they obey him.” 28News about Jesus spread quickly all over Galilee.
Jesus Heals Many People
29Jesus and those with him left the synagogue. Right away they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30Simon’s mother-in-law was lying in bed with a fever. They told Jesus about her right away. 31So he went to her. He took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her. Then she began to serve them.
32That evening after sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who were sick. They also brought all who were controlled by demons. 33All the people in town gathered at the door. 34Jesus healed many of them. They had all kinds of sicknesses. He also drove out many demons. But he would not let the demons speak, because they knew who he was.
Jesus Prays in a Quiet Place
35It was very early in the morning and still dark. Jesus got up and left the house. He went to a place where he could be alone. There he prayed. 36Simon and his friends went to look for Jesus. 37When they found him, they called out, “Everyone is looking for you!”
38Jesus replied, “Let’s go somewhere else. I want to go to the nearby towns. I must preach there also. That is why I have come.” 39So he traveled all around Galilee. He preached in their synagogues. He also drove out demons.
Jesus Heals a Man Who Had a Skin Disease
40A man who had a skin disease came to Jesus. On his knees he begged Jesus. He said, “If you are willing to make me ‘clean,’ you can do it.”
41Jesus became angry. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing to do it,” Jesus said. “Be ‘clean’!” 42Right away the disease left the man, and he was “clean.”
43Jesus sent him away at once. He gave the man a strong warning. 44“Don’t tell this to anyone,” he said. “Go and show yourself to the priest. Offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded. It will be a witness to the priest and the people that you are ‘clean.’ ” 45But the man went out and started talking right away. He spread the news to everyone. So Jesus could no longer enter a town openly. He stayed outside in lonely places. But people still came to him from everywhere.
