O amor do Senhor pelo seu povo
1Esta é a mensagem do Senhor a Israel, comunicada pela boca do profeta Malaquias. 2“Eu amei-vos!”, diz o Senhor.
Responderam vocês: “Como e quando é que nos amaste?”
Disse o Senhor: “Não era Esaú irmão de Jacob? Porém mostrei-vos o meu amor amando a Jacob. 3Mas rejeitei o seu próprio irmão Esaú e destruí a montanha e a herança de Esaú, para a dar aos chacais no deserto.” 4Ainda que os seus descendentes digam: “Tornaremos a reconstruir sobre ruínas!”, o Senhor dos exércitos retorquir-lhes-á: “Tentem, se quiserem, mas tornarei a destruí-la. Porque a sua terra será chamada ‘Terra da Maldade’ e o povo chamar-se-á ‘Povo sob a ira eterna do Senhor’. 5Ó Israel, levanta os olhos e vê o que Deus está a fazer em todo o mundo! Então vocês dirão: ‘Verdadeiramente o grande poder do Senhor manifestou-se para além das nossas fronteiras!’
Sacrifícios imundos
6Um filho honra o seu pai; um servo honra o seu senhor. Eu sou vosso Pai e vosso Senhor e, contudo, os sacerdotes não me prestam honra nenhuma, antes desprezam o meu nome. Dizem vocês: ‘Quando é que desprezámos o teu nome?’
7Quando oferecem sacrifícios imundos no meu altar.
‘Sacrifícios imundos? Alguma vez fizemos uma coisa dessas?’
Sim, sempre que dizem: ‘Não se incomodem em trazer alguma coisa muito valiosa para oferecer ao Senhor!’ 8Quando oferecem em sacrifício um animal cego, não é isso errado? E quando oferecem animais aleijados ou doentes, isso também não é errado? Façam o mesmo com o vosso governador, tentem dar-lhe de presente um animal assim e verifiquem se fica satisfeito, diz o Senhor dos exércitos.
9‘Deus tenha piedade de nós!’, suplicam vocês. ‘Seja a sua misericórdia sobre nós!’ Mas quando trazem ofertas desse tipo, como poderá mostrar-vos algum favor?
10Oh! Quem me dera encontrar no vosso meio um sacerdote que feche as portas e recuse aceitar esse tipo de sacrifício! Não tenho prazer em vocês, diz o Senhor dos exércitos, e não aceitarei as vossas ofertas! 11Mas o meu nome será honrado pelas nações, do Oriente ao Ocidente. Em todo o mundo se oferecerão sacrifícios agradáveis de incenso e ofertas puras em honra do meu nome, o qual se tornará grande entre nações, diz o Senhor dos exércitos.
12Mas vocês desonram-no, dizendo que o meu altar não é digno de muita importância, e encorajam o meu povo a trazer-me animais aleijados e doentes para ali me oferecer. 13Dizem vocês: ‘Oh! É tão difícil servir o Senhor e fazer o que ele pede!’ E viram a cara aos mandamentos que vos dei para cumprirem. Ponderem! Animais roubados, coxos e doentes, oferecidos a Deus! Poderia eu aceitar tais ofertas?, pergunta o Senhor. 14Maldito o homem que promete um belo animal do seu rebanho e acaba por substituí-lo por outro, doente, para o sacrificar ao Senhor. Eu sou um grande Rei, diz o Senhor dos exércitos! O meu nome deve ser profundamente reverenciado entre os gentios!

Israel Doubts God’s Love
2“I have loved you,” says the Lord.
“But you ask, ‘How have you loved us?’
“Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the Lord. “Yet I have loved Jacob, 3but Esau I have hated, and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.”
4Edom may say, “Though we have been crushed, we will rebuild the ruins.”
But this is what the Lord Almighty says: “They may build, but I will demolish. They will be called the Wicked Land, a people always under the wrath of the Lord. 5You will see it with your own eyes and say, ‘Great is the Lord—even beyond the borders of Israel!’
Breaking Covenant Through Blemished Sacrifices
6“A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?” says the Lord Almighty.
“It is you priests who show contempt for my name.
“But you ask, ‘How have we shown contempt for your name?’
7“By offering defiled food on my altar.
“But you ask, ‘How have we defiled you?’
“By saying that the Lord’s table is contemptible. 8When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?” says the Lord Almighty.
9“Now plead with God to be gracious to us. With such offerings from your hands, will he accept you?”—says the Lord Almighty.
10“Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you,” says the Lord Almighty, “and I will accept no offering from your hands. 11My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets. In every place incense and pure offerings will be brought to me, because my name will be great among the nations,” says the Lord Almighty.
12“But you profane it by saying, ‘The Lord’s table is defiled,’ and, ‘Its food is contemptible.’ 13And you say, ‘What a burden!’ and you sniff at it contemptuously,” says the Lord Almighty.
“When you bring injured, lame or diseased animals and offer them as sacrifices, should I accept them from your hands?” says the Lord. 14“Cursed is the cheat who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows to give it, but then sacrifices a blemished animal to the Lord. For I am a great king,” says the Lord Almighty, “and my name is to be feared among the nations.
