1Como o ouro perdeu o seu brilho! O ouro fino tornou-se baço! As pedras do santuário estão espalhadas no chão, no meio da rua.
2A fina flor da tua juventude, esse ouro de maior quilate, é tratada como um vulgar jarro de barro.
3Até os chacais alimentam as suas crias, mas o meu povo de Israel não pode fazê-lo; é como as cruéis avestruzes do deserto, descuidadas com as suas crias.
4As línguas das crianças prendem-se ao céu-da-boca com a sede que têm, pois não conseguem encontrar uma gota de água. Os bebés choram por comida e ninguém consegue dar-lhes seja o que for.
5Aqueles que costumavam comer faustosamente andam agora pelos cantos das ruas estendendo as mãos a pedir esmola. Os que sempre viveram em palácios estão agora no meio da sujidade, coçando-se e mendigando.
6Porque o castigo do meu povo é maior do que o de Sodoma, a qual foi subvertida totalmente em momentos, por uma catástrofe, e sem que interviesse a mão do homem.
7Os seus nobres eram belos e elegantes, mais brilhantes que a neve ao Sol, mais alvos que o leite; tinham a pele mais rosada que finos rubis e sua aparência lembrava as mais lindas safiras.
8Mas agora estão com os rostos estragados e sujos como de fuligem; ninguém os reconhece; estão na pele e osso, secos e mirrados.
9Os que perdem a vida na guerra são considerados muito mais ditosos do que os que morrem de fome.
10Mulheres piedosas e sensíveis chegaram ao ponto de cozer e comer os próprios filhos, para conseguirem sobreviver ao cerco da cidade.
11Mas agora, enfim, a cólera do Senhor está satisfeita, a sua ira terrível foi derramada! Ele acendeu um fogo em Sião que ardeu até aos fundamentos.
12Não havia um rei sequer, nem ninguém em todo o mundo, que acreditasse que o inimigo poderia entrar pelas portas de Jerusalém!
13E Deus permitiu que isso acontecesse por causa dos pecados dos profetas e dos sacerdotes que sujaram a cidade, fazendo derramar-se sangue inocente.
14Agora esses mesmos homens andam cambaleando cegos, através das ruas, cobertos de sangue, tornando impuro tudo o que tocam.
15“Afastem-se!”, grita-lhes o povo. “Vocês são impuros!” E eles fogem para terras distantes e vagueiam por entre estrangeiros, mas ninguém lhes dá autorização de permanência.
16O Senhor mesmo, na sua ira, os dispersou; não os socorrerá mais, visto que não honram os sacerdotes nem os anciãos.
17Bem pedimos ajuda aos nossos aliados, para que venham salvar-nos, mas pedimos em vão. As nações com quem mais contávamos não mexem um dedo a nosso favor.
18Não podemos sair às ruas sem o risco de perder a vida. O nosso fim está perto, os nossos dias estão contados, estamos condenados.
19Os nossos inimigos são mais rápidos do que águias; se fugimos para as montanhas, apanham-nos lá; se nos escondemos no deserto, já lá estão à nossa espera.
20O nosso rei, que nos é tão precioso como o ar que respiramos, o ungido do Senhor, caiu nas armadilhas. E nós pensávamos que sob a sua proteção podíamos viver entre as nações!
21Ficaste feliz, ó povo de Edom, da terra de Uz! No entanto, também tu hás de beber o cálice amargo da ira de Deus que te embriagará e te deixará despida.
22O teu exílio, ó Sião, por causa dos teus pecados, terminará por fim! O Senhor não prolongará o teu cativeiro! Mas em relação a ti, ó Edom, ele punirá o teu pecado e colocará à vista de todos as tuas transgressões!

21¶ Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz; the cup also shall pass through unto thee: thou shalt be drunken, and shalt make thyself naked.
