O anjo do Senhor em Boquim
1Certo dia, o anjo do Senhor chegou a Boquim, vindo de Gilgal, e fez este anúncio ao povo de Israel: “Tirei-vos do Egito, trouxe-vos para esta terra que prometi aos vossos antepassados e garanti-vos que nunca quebraria a aliança que fiz convosco na condição de, da vossa parte, 2não fazerem qualquer espécie de tratado com os povos que vivem aqui; disse-vos que deveriam destruir os altares destas gentes. Porque não obedeceram? 3Agora, visto que quebraram a aliança feita comigo, esta deixou de ter efeito, e já não prometo destruir as nações que vivem nesta terra; pelo contrário, elas serão como espinhos na carne; os seus deuses tornar-se-ão uma armadilha fatal para vocês.”
4O povo começou a lamentar-se e a chorar, quando o anjo do Senhor acabou de falar. 5Por isso, o nome daquele lugar ficou a chamar-se Boquim (eles choram). Então ofereceram sacrifícios ao Senhor.
Josué morre
6Quando Josué finalmente licenciou os exércitos de Israel, cada tribo foi para os seus novos territórios e tomaram posse das terras que lhes tinham sido doadas. 7O povo permaneceu fiel ao Senhor durante o tempo de vida de Josué, e também enquanto viveram aqueles anciãos da sua geração que tinham visto os poderosos milagres feitos pelo Senhor a favor de Israel. 8Josué, o homem de Deus, morreu com a idade de 110 anos; 9foi enterrado no limite da sua propriedade em Timenate-Heres, nas colinas de Efraim, a norte do monte Gaás.
Desobediência e derrota
10Contudo, essa geração acabou por morrer; veio depois outra que ignorou o Senhor e tudo o que tinha feito por Israel. 11O povo de Israel fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor, incluindo a adoração aos ídolos de Baal. 12Abandonaram o Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados, que os tinha arrancado do Egito e puseram-se a prestar adoração aos ídolos das nações vizinhas. Por isso, a ira do Senhor acendeu-se contra Israel. 13Os israelitas afastaram-se do Senhor e puseram-se a adorar a Baal e os ídolos astarotes. 14Isto fez com que o Senhor ardesse de ira contra Israel. Então entregou-os nas mãos de salteadores que roubaram as suas propriedades. Entregou-os nas mãos dos seus inimigos ao seu redor e eles já não foram capazes de lhes resistir.
15Assim, sempre que a nação de Israel saía, o Senhor dificultava-lhes a ação. Tinha-os avisado disso mesmo; tinha-lhes até prometido que o faria. Mas quando o povo se encontrava em grande aperto, 16o Senhor fazia levantarem-se juízes para os livrar dos inimigos. 17Mesmo assim, Israel não quis ouvir esses juízes, pondo-se a adorar outros deuses. Bem depressa se desviaram da verdadeira fé dos seus pais, pois recusaram obedecer aos mandamentos do Senhor. 18Cada juiz salvava o povo de Israel dos seus inimigos, enquanto vivia, porque o Senhor se apiedava com o clamor do povo sob o peso da opressão; e assim os ajudava enquanto o juiz vivia. 19Mas quando este morria, deixavam de viver com justiça e faziam ainda pior do que os seus pais. Dirigiam novamente preces aos ídolos pagãos, lançando-se ao chão em atitudes de humilde adoração. Voltavam obstinadamente aos hábitos malvados das nações que se situavam à sua volta.
20Então a ira do Senhor tornava a acender-se contra Israel e declarava: “Visto que este povo violou a aliança que fiz com os seus antecessores e não me obedeceu, 21nunca mais expulsarei as nações que Josué deixou por conquistar quando morreu. 22Pelo contrário, usarei estas nações para testar o meu povo, para me certificar se obedecem ao Senhor como fizeram os seus pais.” 23Foi assim que o Senhor não expulsou os povos que não tinha entregado nas mãos de Josué, antes permitiu que lá permanecessem.
The Angel of the Lord at Bokim
1The angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land I swore to give to your ancestors. I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you, 2and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall break down their altars.’ Yet you have disobeyed me. Why have you done this? 3And I have also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; they will become traps for you, and their gods will become snares to you.’ ”
4When the angel of the Lord had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud, 5and they called that place Bokim.2:5 Bokim means weepers. There they offered sacrifices to the Lord.
Disobedience and Defeat
6After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites, they went to take possession of the land, each to their own inheritance. 7The people served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel.
8Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten. 9And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Heres2:9 Also known as Timnath Serah (see Joshua 19:50 and 24:30) in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
10After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. 11Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served the Baals. 12They forsook the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the peoples around them. They aroused the Lord’s anger 13because they forsook him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths. 14In his anger against Israel the Lord gave them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist. 15Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the Lord was against them to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress.
16Then the Lord raised up judges,2:16 Or leaders; similarly in verses 17-19 who saved them out of the hands of these raiders. 17Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped them. They quickly turned from the ways of their ancestors, who had been obedient to the Lord’s commands. 18Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the Lord relented because of their groaning under those who oppressed and afflicted them. 19But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their ancestors, following other gods and serving and worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.
20Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and said, “Because this nation has violated the covenant I ordained for their ancestors and has not listened to me, 21I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died. 22I will use them to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the Lord and walk in it as their ancestors did.” 23The Lord had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua.
