1Estas são as mensagens de Jeremias, filho de Hilquias, um dos sacerdotes que viveu na cidade de Anatote, na terra de Benjamim. 2A primeira destas mensagens do Senhor foi-lhe transmitida no décimo terceiro ano do reinado de Josias, filho a Amom, rei de Judá. 3As outras foram-lhe transmitidas no reinado de Joaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, e em várias outras vezes, até ao quinto mês1.3 Mês de Abe. Entre a lua nova do mês de julho e o mês de agosto. do décimo primeiro ano do reinado de Zedequias, filho de Josias, rei de Judá, em que Jerusalém foi tomada e o seu povo levado cativo, como escravos.
A chamada de Jeremias
4O Senhor disse-me: 5“Conheci-te antes que fosses formado dentro do ventre de tua mãe; antes de teres nascido te santifiquei e te nomeei como meu profeta entre as nações.”
6“Oh! Senhor Deus!”, disse eu. “Não posso fazer isso! Sou ainda tão novo! Sou apenas um moço!”
7“Não digas isso!”, replicou-me. “Porque irás onde eu te mandar e dirás tudo o que eu te indicar. 8Não tenhas medo do povo, porque eu, o Senhor, serei contigo para te livrar!”
9Então tocou-me na boca e disse: “Vê, coloquei as minhas palavras na tua boca! 10Hoje começa o teu serviço de advertir as nações e os governos do mundo. De acordo com as minhas palavras, ditas através da tua boca, derribarei alguns deles para os liquidar, e estabelecerei outros e os alimentarei, tornando-os fortes e grandes.”
11Então o Senhor disse-me: “Repara, Jeremias! O que vês tu?”
Respondi: “Vejo uma vara feita de um ramo de amendoeira!”
12“É verdade! Isso significa que estou atento para que a minha palavra se cumpra1.12 Em hebraico, amendoeira e estar atento são palavras semelhantes..”
13Depois o Senhor tornou a perguntar-me: “E agora que vês tu?”
Respondi: “Vejo um recipiente com água a ferver, virado para o sul e derramando-se sobre Judá.”
14“Sim, é isso mesmo! Porque um terror vindo do norte ferverá sobre todo o povo desta terra. 15Estou a convocar os exércitos nas nações do norte para que venham a Jerusalém e ponham os seus tronos nas entradas da cidade e ao longo das suas muralhas, assim como em todas as outras cidades de Judá. 16Esta é a forma como hei de castigar o meu povo, por me ter abandonado e por ter queimado incenso a outros deuses, a ídolos feitos por eles próprios!
17Levanta-te e veste-te! Vai dizer-lhes tudo o que eu te disser! Não tenhas receio, pois doutra forma não terás a força necessária para os confrontares. 18Porque farei com que te tornes inabalável perante os seus ataques. Eles não poderão ferir-te. Serás tão forte como uma cidade fortificada, impossível de capturar, como uma coluna de ferro, como pesados portões de bronze. Nenhum rei de Judá, nem os seus nobres ou sacerdotes, nem o povo, poderá prevalecer contra ti. 19Eles tentarão, mas não conseguirão, pois estou contigo, diz o Senhor, eu te livrarei!”
1The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin: 2To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. 3It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the son of Josiah king of Judah, unto the carrying away of Jerusalem captive in the fifth month.
4Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 5Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.1.5 ordained: Heb. gave 6Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.
7¶ But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. 8Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD. 9Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. 10See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.
11¶ Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree. 12Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it. 13And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof is toward the north.1.13 toward…: Heb. from the face of the north 14Then the LORD said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.1.14 shall…: Heb. shall be opened 15For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, saith the LORD; and they shall come, and they shall set every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah. 16And I will utter my judgments against them touching all their wickedness, who have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.
17¶ Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before them.1.17 confound: or, break to pieces 18For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land. 19And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee.
