A queixa de Habacuque
1Esta é a mensagem que foi dirigida ao profeta Habacuque numa visão da parte de Deus.
2Ó Senhor, quanto tempo terei eu ainda de esperar até que me ouças? Até quando denunciarei diante de ti a violência, sem que nos venhas salvar? 3Porque me fazes ver a iniquidade e a injustiça? Para onde quer que me volte, apenas vejo destruição e violência, gente que só está satisfeita em contender, em contestar o que é justo. 4A lei não é acatada; não se respeita a justiça nos tribunais. Os maus prevalecem claramente sobre os retos. Predomina o suborno e a corrupção.
A resposta do Senhor
5Responde o Senhor: “Olhem para as nações! Vejam e maravilhem-se com o que veem, pois vou mostrar nos vossos dias uma obra tal que nem acreditariam, ainda que vo-la contassem. 6Suscitarei os caldeus, uma nação cruel, violenta, que atravessará o mundo, apoderando-se de tudo o que não é seu. 7São um povo terrível e espantoso. Fazem o que imaginam, sem que ninguém os impeça. 8Têm cavalos; são mais rápidos que leopardos, mais ferozes que lobos ao anoitecer. Avançam com a sua cavalaria vindo de terras afastadas. Como águias, em voo picado, caem sobre a presa. 9Todos os que se lhes opõem, só com o terror, derretem-se diante deles. Amontoam cativos como se fosse areia. 10Riem-se dos reis e dos governantes; troçam dos lugares fortificados. Amontoam simplesmente terra em rampas, junto às muralhas, e já estão capturadas! 11Contudo, passarão rapidamente como o vento. A sua culpa é enorme, visto atribuírem o poder que têm aos seus falsos deuses.”
A segunda queixa de Habacuque
12Ó Senhor, meu Deus, meu santo, tu que és eterno! Será que o teu plano a nosso respeito é dispersar-nos para longe? Com certeza que não! Ó Deus, nossa rocha, foste tu mesmo quem decretou o levantamento destes caldeus para nos ferirem e castigarem, por causa dos nossos terríveis pecados. 13Nós somos maus, mas eles são muito mais! Será que tu, que não suportas o pecado sob nenhuma forma, vais ficar indiferente enquanto nos engolem vivos? Ficarás silencioso enquanto uns malvados destroem aqueles que são melhores do que eles?
14Seremos nós como peixes, que servem para ser apanhados e comidos, que não têm quem os governe, ou como répteis que são apanhados e esmagados? 15Prendem-nos no seu anzol; somos apanhados nos seus ardis e depois ficam a rir-se de nós. 16Acabam por adorar as suas próprias redes e por lhes queimar incenso! “São estes os deuses que nos tornaram poderosos”, dizem eles.
17Vais permitir que continuem assim para sempre? Irão prosperar nessa guerra cruel?

Habakkuk Complains to the Lord
2Lord, how long do I have to call out for help?
Why don’t you listen to me?
How long must I keep telling you
that things are terrible?
Why don’t you save us?
3Why do you make me watch while
people treat others so unfairly?
Why do you put up with the wrong things
they are doing?
I have to look at death.
People are harming others.
They are arguing and fighting all the time.
4The law can’t do what it’s supposed to do.
Fairness never comes out on top.
Sinful people surround those
who do what is right.
So people are never treated fairly.
The Lord Replies to Habakkuk
5The Lord replies,
“Look at the nations. Watch them.
Be totally amazed at what you see.
I am going to do something in your days
that you would never believe.
You would not believe it
even if someone told you about it.
6I am going to send the armies of Babylon to attack you.
They are very mean. They move quickly.
They sweep across the whole earth.
They take over homes
that do not belong to them.
7They terrify others.
They do not recognize any laws but their own.
That is how proud they are.
8Their horses are faster than leopards.
They are meaner than wolves at sunset.
Their horsemen charge straight into battle.
They ride in from far away.
They come down like an eagle
diving for its food.
9All of them are ready and willing to destroy others.
Their huge armies advance like a wind out of the desert.
They gather prisoners like sand.
10They mock kings
and make fun of rulers.
They laugh at all the cities
that have high walls around them.
They build dirt ramps against the walls
and capture the cities.
11They sweep past like the wind.
Then they go on their way.
They are guilty.
They worship their own strength.”
Habakkuk Complains to the Lord Again
12Lord, haven’t you existed forever?
You are my holy God.
You will never die.
Lord, you have appointed the Babylonians
to punish your people.
My Rock, you have chosen them to judge us.
13Your eyes are too pure to look at what is evil.
You can’t put up with the wrong things people do.
So why do you put up
with those who can’t be trusted?
The evil Babylonians swallow up
those who are more godly than themselves.
So why are you silent?
14You have made people to be like the fish in the sea.
They are like the sea creatures that don’t have a ruler.
15The evil Babylonians pull all of them up with hooks.
They catch them in their nets.
They gather them up.
So they celebrate.
They are glad.
16They offer sacrifices to their nets.
They burn incense to them.
Their nets allow them to live in great comfort.
They enjoy the finest food.
17Are you going to let them
keep on emptying their nets?
Will they go on destroying nations
without showing them any mercy?
