Vivificados em Cristo
1Vocês estavam mortos por causa das vossas transgressões e dos vossos pecados. 2Essa era a vossa conduta na vida, antigamente, seguindo as correntes do mundo à vossa volta, e seguindo até aquele que é líder da autoridade dos ares, do espírito que atua, ainda hoje, naqueles que recusam sujeitar-se a Deus. 3E nós também éramos como eles, vivendo apenas segundo os desejos da nossa natureza pecaminosa, os impulsos primários dos nossos sentidos e dos nossos pensamentos. Éramos, por natureza, objeto da severa justiça de Deus, tal como o resto da humanidade.
4Mas Deus, que é riquíssimo em misericórdia, em consequência do seu sublime amor por nós, 5e estando nós ainda mortos devido às transgressões, deu-nos uma vida nova ao ressuscitar Cristo da morte. Foi somente pela graça de Deus que fomos salvos. 6Nós ressuscitámos com Cristo e foi-nos concedido, por isso, o direito de pertença espiritual, pela fé, aos domínios celestiais em que Cristo habita. 7A fim de que, para sempre, todos constatem como é rica e generosa essa sua graça, que Deus revelou em tudo o que fez por nós através de Jesus Cristo.
8Porque pela sua graça é que somos salvos, por meio da fé que temos em Cristo. Portanto, a salvação não é algo que se possa adquirir pelos nossos próprios meios: é uma dádiva de Deus. 9Não é uma recompensa pelas nossas boas obras. Ninguém pode reclamar mérito algum nisso. 10Somos a obra-prima de Deus. Ele criou-nos de novo em Cristo Jesus, para que possamos realizar todas as boas obras que planeou para nós.
Unidade e paz em Cristo
11Não se esqueçam de que antigamente vocês, gentios por nascimento, eram estrangeiros e chamados incircuncisos pelos judeus, que se orgulhavam na sua circuncisão, apesar dela somente afetar os seus corpos e não os seus corações. 12Vocês, com efeito, viviam nesse tempo sem Cristo, privados da cidadania com Israel, nem das promessas das alianças que Deus fizera. Viviam sem Deus e sem esperança neste mundo. 13Mas agora pertencem a Jesus. Embora tivessem estado afastados de Deus, foram agora trazidos para junto dele, por causa do sangue de Cristo.
14Porque Cristo fez a paz entre nós, os judeus, e vocês, os gentios, tornando-nos um só povo. Ao derrubar o muro de separação que nos opunha, 15Cristo, pela sua morte física, aboliu o sistema inteiro da Lei judaica que excluía os gentios. Ele recriou uma nova humanidade, trazendo a paz. 16Na cruz, Cristo igualmente reconciliou as duas partes, não só com Deus, mas também ambas entre si. E assim na cruz desapareceu a inimizade que entre elas havia. 17Foram estas as boas novas que Cristo veio anunciar: a paz, tanto aos que viviam longe como aos que viviam perto. 18Com efeito, por ele, tanto uns como outros temos agora pleno direito de acesso ao Pai, através de um mesmo Espírito.
19E assim vocês, gentios, já não são mais estranhos, mas membros da família de Deus, concidadãos do próprio povo de Deus; 20esse povo que é como um edifício construído sobre o alicerce dos profetas e dos apóstolos, e do qual Jesus Cristo é a pedra principal de esquina, pela qual todo o edifício se alinha. 21Em Cristo essa construção cresce, porque cada pedra se adapta perfeitamente ao conjunto, a fim de se tornar um templo consagrado ao Senhor. 22Vocês estão também integrados nesse conjunto, para formarem a morada onde Deus habita pelo seu Espírito.
1And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. 4But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
11Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; 12That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: 13But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. 14For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; 15Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; 16And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: 17And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. 18For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. 19Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; 20And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; 21In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: 22In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
