Os reis do Sul e do Norte
1Eu fui mandado fortalecer e ajudar Dario, o medo, no primeiro ano do seu reinado. 2Mas agora vou mostrar-te o que o futuro tem guardado. Três outros reis persas governarão e um quarto suceder-lhes-á, muito mais próspero que os primeiros. Usando os recursos de que dispõe, irá obter vitórias políticas e desencadeará uma guerra total contra a Grécia.
3Depois levantar-se-á um poderoso rei na Grécia que governará um vasto reino e conseguirá tudo o que tiver planeado conquistar. 4Contudo, no auge do seu poder, o seu reino será repartido em quatro nações mais fracas, que nem sequer serão dirigidas pelos seus filhos. O seu império será dividido e entregue a outros.
5Um deles, o rei do Sul11.5 Referência ao Egito debaixo do domínio grego., há de conseguir aumentar bastante em força, mas um dos seus comandantes revoltar-se-á, tomará conta do poder, tornando-o ainda mais forte. 6Anos mais tarde formar-se-á uma aliança entre o rei do Norte11.6 Referência à Síria debaixo do domínio grego. e o do Sul. A filha deste será dada em casamento ao rei do Norte, num gesto de paz, mas ela perderá a sua influência sobre ele e as suas esperanças, assim como as do seu pai, o rei do Egito, serão frustradas.
7Contudo, quando o seu irmão subir ao trono, como rei do Sul, há de congregar um exército contra o rei do Norte e derrotá-lo-á. 8Quando regressar ao Egito trará consigo os ídolos da Síria e também artigos preciosos de ouro e prata. Durante muitos anos deixará o rei da Síria em paz. 9Entretanto, o rei do Norte invadirá o reino do Sul, por pouco tempo, pois depressa regressará à sua terra. 10Contudo, os filhos deste rei do Norte juntarão um poderoso exército que invadirá Israel, passará ao Egito e se fortificará ali.
11Depois o rei do Sul, com grande ira, concentrar-se-á contra as vastas forças do rei do Norte e as derrotará. 12Cheio de orgulho, após esta vitória retumbante, há de chegar a liquidar milhares dos seus inimigos. No entanto, o seu sucesso será de pouca duração. 13Alguns anos mais tarde o rei do Norte voltará com um exército completamente equipado, muito maior do que aquele que perdera antes. 14Outras nações se unirão a ele nessa cruzada contra o Egito; gente rebelde entre os judeus se juntará a ele, cumprindo assim a profecia; mas não serão bem sucedidos. 15Então o rei do Norte e os seus aliados sitiarão uma cidade fortificada do Egito, conquistá-la-ão e os altivos exércitos do Egito serão derrotados. 16O rei do Norte continuará sem ninguém que se lhe oponha; ninguém será capaz de o deter. Entrará também na terra gloriosa de Israel e a saqueará. 17Estabelecerá um plano para o domínio completo do Egito; acordará também o casamento duma filha com o rei do Sul, para que possa avançar melhor com os seus intentos, mas não conseguirá o que quer. 18Posteriormente, voltará a sua atenção para as cidades costeiras e tomará muitas delas. Contudo, haverá um comandante que o deterá e o fará retirar-se envergonhado. 19Regressará à sua terra, mas pelo caminho terá problemas e desaparecerá.
20O seu sucessor será lembrado como aquele que colocou impostos sobre Israel. Depois dum breve reinado, morrerá misteriosamente, nem em combate, nem em disputa nenhuma.
21O rei a seguir será um homem mau e não subirá ao trono por sucessão real. Tomará o poder através do engano e da intriga. 22Depois toda a oposição desaparecerá diante dele, incluindo o chefe do povo da aliança. 23As suas promessas serão sempre falsas. Desde o princípio que a sua forma de atuar será sempre a do engano; apenas com um punhado de seguidores, tornar-se-á poderoso. 24Entrará nas áreas mais prósperas da terra, sem aviso prévio, e fará aquilo que nunca tinha sido feito antes: tomará as propriedades dos ricos e dos abastados e distribuí-las-á pelo povo. Com grande sucesso irá atacar e capturar grandes fortalezas através das terras que controla, mas isto durará apenas um certo tempo.
25Conseguirá conjugar forças e levantar um exército contra o Egito; este também tentará fazer o mesmo, mas sem êxito, porque enormes conjuras se formarão contra ele. 26Os da sua própria casa irão depô-lo; o seu exército será dizimado e muitos serão mortos. 27Ambos estes reis conspirarão um contra o outro, mesmo à mesa das negociações, tentando enganar-se mutuamente, mas isso de pouco servirá, pois nem um nem outro serão bem sucedidos até que chegue o tempo indicado por Deus.
28O rei do Norte regressará então a casa com grandes riquezas, não sem antes marchar sobre Israel, o povo da santa aliança, e destruí-la; fará o que planeou e regressará à sua terra. 29No tempo previsto, voltará de novo as suas forças para o Sul, mas nessa altura será tudo diferente. 30Porque navios de guerra de Quitim virão atacá-lo, e isso vai atemorizá-lo. A seguir, furioso, ele tentará destruir a religião do povo da santa aliança. E atenderá aos que abandonaram essa aliança. 31Enfurecido por ter sido obrigado a fugir, vai levantar-se ferozmente, a fim de profanar o santuário, fazendo parar os sacrifícios diários e estabelecendo a abominação que causa a desolação. 32O rei usará o engano para ganhar o apoio dos que transgrediram os preceitos da aliança, para ganhá-los para o seu lado; mas os que reconhecem a Deus resistirão com firmeza e coragem e farão grandes coisas.
33Os que têm discernimento espiritual terão um largo ministério, ensinando, durante aquele tempo. Correrão constantemente perigo; muitos deles morrerão pelo fogo ou pelas armas, ou serão postos em cárceres, despojados do que possuem. 34No meio destas pressões, alguns homens descrentes apresentar-se-ão como que pretendendo oferecer socorro, mas só para tirar proveito dos que são perseguidos. 35Até alguns dos mais dotados nas coisas de Deus tropeçarão naquele dia e cairão; mas isto acabará por ser uma forma de os refinar e purificar, tornando-os mais limpos até ao fim de todas estas provações, até ao momento que Deus indicar.
36O rei fará só aquilo que lhe agrada, proclamando-se acima dos deuses, blasfemando até do Deus dos deuses e prosperando, mas só até quando o Senhor entender, porque os planos de Deus são inabaláveis. 37O rei não terá consideração alguma pelos deuses dos seus antepassados, nem pelo deus amado pelas mulheres, nem por nenhum outro, porque se gloriará como sendo ele o maior de todos. 38Em lugar desses deuses todos, adorará o deus das fortalezas, um deus que seus pais desconheciam, e será pródigo em ofertar-lhe donativos muito caros como ouro, prata, joias e outras riquezas. 39Dirá que é com a sua ajuda que há de atacar grandes fortalezas e conquistá-las. Dará honras aos que se lhe submetem, nomeando-os para posições de autoridade e repartindo entre eles a terra como recompensa.
40Chegando o tempo do fim, o rei do Sul tornará a atacá-lo e o do Norte reagirá com a violência e a fúria dum furacão; o seu vasto exército e a sua grande armada de navios de guerra sairão para invadi-lo com o seu poder. 41Dessa forma, conseguirá invadir vários países, incluindo Israel, a terra gloriosa, e derrubará o governo de muitas outras nações. Moabe, Edom e quase todo Amon escaparão. 42O Egito e muitas outra nações serão ocupadas. 43Tomará posse de todos os tesouros do Egito, tesouros de ouro e de prata, além doutras riquezas, e os líbios e os cuchitas tornar-se-ão seus servos.
44Nessa altura, notícias vindas tanto do norte como do oriente irão alarmá-lo e voltará em grande ira para destruir e aniquilar muitos. 45Deter-se-á entre a gloriosa montanha santa e o mar, armando ali as tendas reais. Enquanto permanece nesse sítio, o seu tempo chegará e não haverá ninguém que o apoie.
1Also I in the first year of Darius the Mede, even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen him. 2And now will I shew thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia. 3And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will. 4And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.
