1Saulo concordara com a morte de Estêvão.
A igreja é perseguida e espalhada
Naquele dia, começou uma grande onda de perseguição contra os crentes, onda essa que varreu a igreja em Jerusalém. E todos, exceto os apóstolos, fugiram para a Judeia e Samaria. 2Alguns homens piedosos, com grande desgosto, foram enterrar Estêvão. 3Saulo excedia-se andando por toda a parte para destruir a igreja, chegando a entrar em casas particulares, arrastando para fora homens e mulheres e metendo-os na prisão.
4Mas os que tinham fugido de Jerusalém pregavam em todo o lado a palavra de Jesus. 5Filipe, por exemplo, foi para a cidade de Samaria onde falou de Cristo ao povo. 6As multidões escutavam atentas aquilo que ele dizia por causa dos sinais que fazia. 7Espíritos impuros foram expulsos de muita gente, soltando grandes gritos, e paralíticos e coxos foram curados. 8Pelo que era grande a alegria naquela cidade!
Simão, o feiticeiro
9Havia ali um homem chamado Simão que era feiticeiro. Gozava de grande influência entre o povo samaritano e gabava-se de ser um grande homem. 10Toda a gente, desde os que vinham de um estrato social inferior ao de mais elevado, afirmava: “Este homem é o poder de Deus”, a que chamam o “Grande Poder”. 11E seguia-o, pois durante muito tempo ele tinham-os iludido com as suas artes de feitiçaria. 12Mas agora esse mesmo povo acreditava antes na mensagem de Filipe, que lhes anunciava Jesus Cristo e o reino de Deus. Como resultado, muitos homens e mulheres foram batizados. 13O próprio Simão creu e foi batizado, começando a acompanhar Filipe por onde quer que andasse, assistindo com pasmo aos sinais que realizava.
14Quando os apóstolos em Jerusalém souberam que o povo de Samaria aceitara a mensagem de Deus, mandaram Pedro e João até lá. 15Estes desceram até lá e começaram a orar pelos novos crentes para que recebessem o Espírito Santo, 16pois o Espírito não descera ainda sobre nenhum deles; tinham sido batizados apenas em nome do Senhor Jesus. 17Então Pedro e João puseram as mãos sobre esses crentes e receberam o Espírito Santo.
18Quando Simão viu isto, que o Espírito Santo era dado quando os apóstolos colocavam as mãos sobre a cabeça das pessoas, ofereceu dinheiro para adquirir esse poder: 19“Quero tê-lo também para que, quando eu puser as minhas mãos sobre as pessoas, elas recebam o Espírito Santo!”
20Mas Pedro respondeu: “Que o teu dinheiro morra contigo por pensares que o dom de Deus se pode comprar! 21Não podes ter parte nisto, porque o teu coração não é reto diante de Deus. 22Arrepende-te dessa perversidade e ora, talvez Deus ainda perdoe o pensamento do teu coração; 23pois vejo que tens ira e amargura e estás amarrado pela injustiça.”
24“Orem por mim ao Senhor”, exclamou Simão, “para que essas coisas terríveis não me aconteçam!”
25Depois de darem testemunho e de pregarem a palavra do Senhor na Samaria, Pedro e João voltaram para Jerusalém, parando em várias aldeias samaritanas ao longo do caminho, para aí pregarem também as boas novas.
Filipe e o etíope
26E quanto a Filipe, um anjo do Senhor disse-lhe: “Vai até à estrada que sai de Jerusalém e que atravessa o deserto de Gaza na direção do sul.” 27Filipe assim fez e encontrou, viajando naquela estrada, um administrador do reino da Etiópia, um eunuco que era alto funcionário da rainha Candace. Fora a Jerusalém adorar no templo. 28Voltava agora no seu carro, lendo em voz alta no livro do profeta Isaías.
29O Espírito Santo disse a Filipe: “Vai e caminha ao lado do carro!”
30Filipe aproximou-se a correr e, ouvindo o que lia, perguntou-lhe: “Compreendes o que lês?”
31“Claro que não!”, exclamou o homem. “Como posso compreender se não há quem me ensine?” E pediu a Filipe que entrasse no carro e se sentasse ao seu lado. 32A passagem das Escrituras que o eunuco lia era:
“Levaram-no como uma ovelha para o matadouro,
e assim como um cordeiro se mantém calado
diante dos que o tosquiam,
assim também ele não abriu a sua boca.
33Foi humilhado, negaram-lhe justiça;
quem pode descrever a sua geração?
Pois a sua vida foi tirada da Terra.”8.33 Is 53.7.
34O eunuco perguntou a Filipe: “Peço-te que me digas, por favor: Isaías falava acerca de si próprio ou de outra pessoa?” 35Então Filipe, começando com este mesmo texto da Escritura e, usando muitas outras passagens, falou-lhe de Jesus.
36Entretanto, prosseguindo eles pelo caminho, chegaram a um local onde havia água e o eunuco disse: “Água já aqui temos! Porque é que eu não hei de ser batizado?”
37“Com certeza que sim”, respondeu Filipe, “se creres de todo o teu coração.”
E o eunuco disse: “Creio que Jesus Cristo é o Filho de Deus!” 38Parou o carro e, descendo ambos para dentro da água, Filipe batizou-o.
39Quando saíram da água, o Espírito do Senhor arrebatou Filipe, e o eunuco, que nunca mais o viu, continuou alegremente a sua viagem. 40Filipe deu por si em Azoto. Aí pregou as boas novas. Não só aí como também em todas as cidades no caminho até Cesareia.

The church persecuted and scattered
On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. 2Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him. 3But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off both men and women and put them in prison.
Philip in Samaria
4Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. 5Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. 6When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. 7For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and many who were paralysed or lame were healed. 8So there was great joy in that city.
Simon the sorcerer
9Now for some time a man named Simon had practised sorcery in the city and amazed all the people of Samaria. He boasted that he was someone great, 10and all the people, both high and low, gave him their attention and exclaimed, ‘This man is rightly called the Great Power of God.’ 11They followed him because he had amazed them for a long time with his sorcery. 12But when they believed Philip as he proclaimed the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptised, both men and women. 13Simon himself believed and was baptised. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the great signs and miracles he saw.
14When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. 15When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
18When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money 19and said, ‘Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.’
20Peter answered: ‘May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! 21You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. 22Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.’
24Then Simon answered, ‘Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me.’
25After they had further proclaimed the word of the Lord and testified about Jesus, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.
Philip and the Ethiopian
26Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, ‘Go south to the road – the desert road – that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’ 27So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian8:27 That is, from the southern Nile region eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake, queen of the Ethiopians. This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, 28and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. 29The Spirit told Philip, ‘Go to that chariot and stay near it.’
30Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ Philip asked.
31‘How can I,’ he said, ‘unless someone explains it to me?’ So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
32This is the passage of Scripture the eunuch was reading:
‘He was led like a sheep to the slaughter,
and as a lamb before its shearer is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
33In his humiliation he was deprived of justice.
Who can speak of his descendants?
For his life was taken from the earth.’8:33 Isaiah 53:7,8 (see Septuagint)
34The eunuch asked Philip, ‘Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?’ 35Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.
36As they travelled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, ‘Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptised?’ 378:37 Some manuscripts include here Philip said, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you may.’ The eunuch answered, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’ 38And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptised him. 39When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. 40Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and travelled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.
