1Eliseu replicou: “O Senhor manda dizer que amanhã, por esta altura, sete litros de farinha ou catorze litros de cevada serão vendidos nos mercados de Samaria por 12 gramas de prata!”
2Um dos ajudantes do rei disse-lhe: “Isso, nem que o Senhor abrisse janelas no céu, poderia acontecer!” Eliseu replicou-lhe: “Verás isso acontecer, mas não poderás comprar nada!”
O cerco é levantado
3Havia quatro leprosos que se sentavam habitualmente do lado de fora dos portões da cidade. “Afinal, o que é que estamos aqui a fazer, sentados, a deixarmo-nos morrer?”, disseram uns para os outros. 4“Se ficamos aqui, morremos de fome; se vamos para a cidade, também morremos de fome. O melhor é a gente render-se ao exército arameu. Se nos deixarem viver, tanto melhor; se nos matarem, iríamos de qualquer forma acabar por morrer.”
5No final da tarde, dirigiram-se ao acampamento dos arameus e constataram que não havia ali ninguém. 6É que o Senhor tinha feito com que o exército arameu ouvisse o ruído do rodado de muitos carros e o galopar de muitos cavalos a aproximarem-se. “O rei de Israel contratou o exército dos hititas e dos egípcios para nos atacarem!”, gritaram eles. 7Entraram em pânico e fugiram durante a noite, abandonando tendas, cavalos, jumentos, tudo.
8Quando os leprosos chegaram à entrada do acampamento, foram de tenda em tenda, comendo e bebendo o que encontravam, ao mesmo tempo que guardavam tudo o que fosse prata, ouro e roupa, para esconderem.
9Acabaram por reconhecer que faziam mal: “Isto não está certo! Acontecer uma coisa maravilhosa e não dizermos a ninguém! Se esperarmos pela manhã, até nos pode suceder alguma desgraça; vamos dizer ao povo e no palácio aquilo que aconteceu.”
10Voltaram para a cidade e contaram às sentinelas o sucedido; que tinham ido ao acampamento dos arameus e que não estava ali ninguém, embora os cavalos e os jumentos continuassem presos e as tendas em ordem; mas não se via vivalma em redor. 11As sentinelas transmitiram a notícia ao pessoal do palácio.
12O rei levantou-se da cama e disse aos seus conselheiros: “Eu sei o que aconteceu. Os arameus sabem que estamos a morrer de fome, por isso armaram-nos uma cilada; deixaram o acampamento, esconderam-se aí pelos campos, pensando atrair-nos assim para fora da cidade. Nessa altura, atacar-nos-ão; levam-nos para sermos seus escravos e ocupam a cidade.”
13Um dos conselheiros avançou: “Não seria melhor que enviássemos alguns homens a espiar o que se passa? Poderão levar cinco dos cavalos que ainda nos restam; se alguma coisa lhes acontecer, a perda será igual a ficarem aqui e morrerem connosco.”
14Conseguiram encontrar quatro cavalos, que atrelaram a dois carros, e o rei mandou dois homens com os carros ver para onde tinham ido os arameus. 15Eles seguiram o trilho do inimigo; havia roupa e equipamentos espalhados por todo o lado, que tinham sido abandonados na corrida até ao Jordão. Os espias regressaram e contaram ao rei o que tinham visto. 16O povo de Samaria irrompeu para fora da cidade e lançou-se literalmente sobre o acampamento dos arameus. Dessa forma, sete litros de farinha ou catorze litros de cevada chegaram a ser vendidos por 12 gramas de prata, tal como o Senhor dissera!
17O rei tinha colocado à entrada da cidade um ajudante, em cujo braço se apoiara, para controlar a circulação de quem entrava e saía. Este acabou por ser derrubado e morreu debaixo dos pés da multidão em delírio. 18Este ajudante fora o tal que, na véspera, Eliseu previra haveria de chegar daí a instantes para o prender. Nessa altura, o homem de Deus dissera ao rei que sete litros de farinha ou catorze litros de cevada haveriam de ser vendidos no dia seguinte por 12 gramas de prata. 19Esse tal ajudante retorquira ao homem de Deus, que isso não poderia acontecer nem que as janelas do céu fossem abertas pelo Senhor! Eliseu garantira a esse ajudante: “Verás isso acontecer, mas não poderás comprar nada!” 20E foi o que sucedeu, porque o povo o esmagou à entrada da cidade, morrendo ali.

3¶ And there were four leprous men at the entering in of the gate: and they said one to another, Why sit we here until we die? 4If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die. 5And they rose up in the twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians: and when they were come to the uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, there was no man there. 6For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us. 7Wherefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their asses, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life. 8And when these lepers came to the uttermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and did eat and drink, and carried thence silver, and gold, and raiment, and went and hid it; and came again, and entered into another tent, and carried thence also, and went and hid it. 9Then they said one to another, We do not well: this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace: if we tarry till the morning light, some mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king’s household.7.9 some…: Heb. we shall find punishment 10So they came and called unto the porter of the city: and they told them, saying, We came to the camp of the Syrians, and, behold, there was no man there, neither voice of man, but horses tied, and asses tied, and the tents as they were. 11And he called the porters; and they told it to the king’s house within.
12¶ And the king arose in the night, and said unto his servants, I will now shew you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we be hungry; therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, When they come out of the city, we shall catch them alive, and get into the city. 13And one of his servants answered and said, Let some take, I pray thee, five of the horses that remain, which are left in the city, (behold, they are as all the multitude of Israel that are left in it: behold, I say, they are even as all the multitude of the Israelites that are consumed:) and let us send and see.7.13 in the city: Heb. in it 14They took therefore two chariot horses; and the king sent after the host of the Syrians, saying, Go and see. 15And they went after them unto Jordan: and, lo, all the way was full of garments and vessels, which the Syrians had cast away in their haste. So a measure of fine flour was sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, according to the word of the LORD.
17¶ And the king appointed the lord on whose hand he leaned to have the charge of the gate: and the people trode upon him in the gate, and he died, as the man of God had said, who spake when the king came down to him. 18And it came to pass as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, Two measures of barley for a shekel, and a measure of fine flour for a shekel, shall be to morrow about this time in the gate of Samaria: 19And that lord answered the man of God, and said, Now, behold, if the LORD should make windows in heaven, might such a thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof. 20And so it fell out unto him: for the people trode upon him in the gate, and he died.
