1E veio a palavra de Samuel a todo o Israel. Nesse tempo, Israel estava em guerra com os filisteus. O exército israelita estava acampado perto de Ebenezer e os filisteus junto de Afeque. 2Estes derrotaram Israel, matando 4000 dos seus soldados. 3Depois do combate, o exército de Israel regressou ao acampamento e os seus anciãos interrogavam-se por que razão o Senhor os teria conduzido àquela derrota: “Vamos trazer para aqui a arca da aliança, desde Silo. Se a trouxermos connosco, o Senhor estará no nosso meio e nos salvará seguramente dos nossos inimigos.”
4Então mandaram vir a arca da aliança do Senhor dos exércitos que habita entronizado acima dos querubins. Hofni e Fineias, os filhos de Eli, vieram com ela até ao campo da batalha.
5Quando os israelitas viram chegar a arca da aliança do Senhor, deram um brado de alegria tão forte que até a terra tremeu! 6“O que é que se passa?”, perguntaram os filisteus. “Para que foi aquele grito no campo dos hebreus?”
Quando souberam que a arca do Senhor tinha chegado ali, 7entraram em pânico. “Um deus4.7 Ou Deus. veio para o campo deles!”, gritavam. “Ai de nós, pois nunca enfrentámos uma situação destas! 8Quem é que nos vai salvar destes poderosos deuses de Israel? São os mesmos que destruíram o Egito com pragas, quando Israel lá morava. 9Lutem agora, ó filisteus, como nunca o fizeram antes, pois doutra forma tornar-se-ão seus escravos, tal como eles já foram nossos escravos!”
10Por isso, os filisteus lutaram desesperadamente e Israel foi novamente derrotado. Dos homens de Israel morreram 30 000 nesse dia e o restante fugiu para as tendas. 11A arca de Deus foi capturada e Hofni e Fineias foram mortos.
A morte de Eli
12Um homem da tribo de Benjamim veio a correr da batalha e chegou nesse mesmo dia a Silo com a roupa rasgada e a cabeça coberta de terra. 13Eli estava sentado à beira do caminho, à espera de notícias da batalha, porque o seu coração tremia de cuidados pela segurança da arca de Deus. Quando o mensageiro chegou da frente de combate e relatou o que acontecera, levantou-se um grande clamor em toda a cidade. 14“O que é este barulho todo?”, perguntou Eli.
O mensageiro apressou-se a ir ter com Eli, dando-lhe a conhecer o que sucedera. 15Eli era um ancião já de 98 anos e perdera totalmente a vista. 16-17“Acabei de chegar da batalha; vim hoje de lá”, disse a Eli. “Israel fugiu diante dos filisteus, foi derrotado e milhares de tropas israelitas morreram no campo de batalha. Hofni e Fineias também foram mortos e a arca capturada.”
18Quando o mensageiro mencionou o que acontecera à arca, Eli caiu para trás no seu assento, ao lado do portão de entrada, partiu o pescoço e faleceu, porque era muito velho e pesado. Eli julgou a Israel durante 40 anos.
19Quando a nora de Eli, a mulher de Fineias, que estava grávida, ouviu dizer que a arca fora tomada, que o marido tinha sido morto e o sogro falecera, o processo de dar à luz precipitou-se e começou a sentir as dores de parto, 20ao mesmo tempo que a vida se ia apagando. Antes de morrer, as mulheres que a assistiam disseram-lhe que estava tudo bem e que tinha tido um rapaz. Ela nada respondeu nem vibrou com a notícia. 21Apenas murmurou: “Chamem ao menino Icabode (foi-se a glória), porque foi-se a glória de Israel.” 22Deu esse nome ao bebé, porque a arca de Deus tinha sido capturada e o marido e o sogro tinham morrido.

The Philistines Capture the Ark
Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines at Aphek. 2The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 3When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh, so that he may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies.”
4So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim. And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout that the ground shook. 6Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew camp?”
When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7the Philistines were afraid. “A god has4:7 Or “Gods have (see Septuagint) come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. 8We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness. 9Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Be men, and fight!”
10So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
Death of Eli
12That same day a Benjamite ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust on his head. 13When he arrived, there was Eli sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.
14Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is the meaning of this uproar?”
The man hurried over to Eli, 15who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes had failed so that he could not see. 16He told Eli, “I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.”
Eli asked, “What happened, my son?”
17The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.”
18When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led4:18 Traditionally judged Israel forty years.
19His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 20As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.
21She named the boy Ichabod,4:21 Ichabod means no glory. saying, “The Glory has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22She said, “The Glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”
