Samuel repreende Saul
1Saul tinha 30 anos quando foi investido rei em Israel. O seu reinado durou 40 anos. 2Escolheu um contingente especial de 3000 combatentes, levando 2000 consigo para Micmás e para a região montanhosa de Betel, enquanto os outros 1000 ficavam com o seu filho Jónatas em Gibeá na terra de Benjamim. O resto do exército foi mandado para casa.
3Jónatas atacou e destruiu a guarnição dos filisteus em Gibeá. A notícia desta iniciativa militar depressa se espalhou pela terra da Filisteia e Saul mandou tocar a trombeta por todo o Israel, para que os hebreus ouvissem o que aconteceu. 4Anunciou que tinha destruído a guarnição dos filisteus e avisou as tropas de que se tinham tornado alvo do ódio dos seus inimigos. Por isso, todo o exército israelita foi novamente mobilizado e concentrou-se em Gilgal.
5Os filisteus recrutaram igualmente um poderoso exército de 3000 carros de combate, 6000 cavaleiros e tantos soldados de infantaria que de longe mais pareciam a areia das praias. Estes acamparam em Micmás a oriente de Bete-Aven. 6Quando os israelitas viram aquele vasto ajuntamento de tropas inimigas, descontrolaram-se e foram esconder-se em cavernas, matas, penhascos, fendas de rochas e até em túmulos e cisternas. 7Alguns deles atravessaram o rio Jordão e fugiram para a terra de Gad e de Gileade.
Entretanto, Saul ficou em Gilgal e os que estavam com ele tremiam de medo à espera do que poderia acontecer. 8Samuel tinha avisado anteriormente Saul que deveria esperar sete dias pela sua chegada. Mas Saul, impaciente, vendo que ele não chegava, e perante aquela fuga das tropas, 9decidiu sacrificar ele próprio o holocausto e as ofertas de paz. 10Estava a acabar a cerimónia quando Samuel chegou. Saul foi ao encontro dele para o saudar. 11Samuel perguntou-lhe: “Que foi que fizeste?”
“Comecei a ver os meus homens a fugir, e que tu não chegavas na altura prevista, perante toda esta concentração de filisteus em Micmás prontos para o combate. 12E disse para comigo: ‘Os filisteus estão prontos a atacar-nos em Gilgal e eu nem sequer pedi a ajuda do Senhor!’ Por isso, ainda que com relutância, ofereci o holocausto sem esperar que viesses.”
13“Procedeste como um louco!”, exclamou Samuel. “Desobedeceste ao mandamento do Senhor, teu Deus. Ele estava a planear fazer de ti e dos teus descendentes reis de Israel para sempre. 14Sendo assim, a tua governação não terá continuidade. O Senhor pretende um homem segundo o seu coração. Até já escolheu quem há de ser e já o nomeou para rei sobre o seu povo, porque tu não guardaste as ordens que te deu.”
Israel sem armas
15Samuel deixou Gilgal e foi para Gibeá na terra de Benjamim. Saul contou aqueles que ainda tinha consigo e viu que eram apenas 600 soldados. 16Saul e Jónatas, mais esses 600 homens, acamparam em Gibeá na terra de Benjamim; os filisteus continuavam em Micmás. 17Três companhias de tropa de choque dos filisteus em breve deixaram o acampamento militar e dirigiram-se uma para Ofra na terra de Shual; 18a outra para Bete-Horom e a terceira em direção à fronteira, acima do vale de Seboim, perto do deserto.
19Não havia, nessa altura, em toda a terra de Israel um só ferreiro. Os próprios filisteus tinham criado essa situação entre os israelitas, por temerem que fizessem as suas próprias armas, espadas e lanças. 20Assim, os hebreus eram obrigados, sempre que precisavam de amolar as suas relhas, enxadas, machados ou sachos, a ir ter com os ferreiros filisteus. 21Chegavam mesmo, para afiar os instrumentos de trabalho, a pagar os seguintes preços: uma relha ou uma enxada, 7,5 gramas de prata; os outros instrumentos ou um aguilhão de bois por metade daquela tarifa.
22Por essa razão, não havia sequer uma só espada ou lança no meio daquele povo, à exceção de Saul e Jónatas que estavam armados. 23O desfiladeiro de Micmás estava sob a vigilância dum contingente militar filisteu.

5¶ And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Beth-aven. 6When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits. 7And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.13.7 followed…: Heb. trembled after him
8¶ And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him. 9And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering. 10And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.13.10 salute: Heb. bless
11¶ And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash; 12Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.13.12 made…: Heb. intreated the face 13And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever. 14But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.
15And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. 17¶ And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual: 18And another company turned the way to Beth-horon: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.
19¶ Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears: 20But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock. 21Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.13.21 a file: Heb. a file with mouths, or Heb. a pim, a third of a shekel13.21 sharpen: Heb. set 22So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found. 23And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.13.23 garrison: or, standing camp
