1Disse mais o Senhor a Moisés: “Leva este povo, que trouxeste do Egito, para a terra que prometi a Abraão, a Isaque e a Jacob, porque lhes prometi: Darei esta terra aos vossos descendentes.
2Mandarei um anjo na vossa frente para expulsar de lá os cananeus, os amorreus, os hititas, os perizeus, os heveus e os jebuseus. 3É uma terra onde jorra leite e mel. Mas eu não viajarei convosco, porque vocês são obstinados e arriscar-me-ia a ter de vos destruir durante o caminho.”
4Quando o povo ouviu esta má notícia ficou acabrunhado e ninguém se arranjou nem pôs os seus adornos. 5Porque o Senhor mesmo dissera a Moisés que lhes transmitisse o seguinte: “Vocês são um povo obstinado e rebelde. Se eu ficasse um momento que fosse no vosso meio teria de vos exterminar. Tirem os adornos e enfeites até que eu decida o que farei convosco.” 6E foi assim que eles se despojaram dos seus atavios aos pés do monte Horebe.
A tenda do encontro com Deus
7Moisés passou a montar a tenda, “a tenda do encontro” como ele lhe chamou, fora do acampamento. E quem quisesse consultar o Senhor tinha de sair até lá.
8Todas as vezes que Moisés ia à tenda do encontro todo o povo se levantava e ficava de pé à entrada das tendas olhando para ele até entrar. 9De seguida, a coluna de nuvem descia e ficava em frente à entrada, enquanto o Senhor falava com Moisés. 10Todo o povo adorava, desde o limiar das suas tendas, e se inclinava profundamente quando via a nuvem descer. 11Ali o Senhor falava com Moisés face a face, tal como alguém fala com o seu amigo. Depois Moisés voltava para o acampamento, mas o jovem que o assistia, Josué, filho de Num, nunca se afastava do interior da tenda.
Moisés e a glória do Senhor
12Moisés disse ao Senhor: “Tu disseste-me: ‘Leva este povo para a terra prometida’, mas não disseste quem é que mandas comigo. Tu dizes: ‘Conheço-te pelo teu nome e achaste graça aos meus olhos.’ 13Ora, se realmente é assim, mostra-me e guia-me com clareza no caminho por onde queres que vá, para que possa ainda conhecer-te mais e continue a achar graça aos teus olhos. Não te esqueças que esta nação é o teu povo.”
14E o Senhor respondeu-lhe: “Eu próprio irei contigo e te darei descanso.”
15“Se não fores connosco não nos deixes afastarmo-nos um só passo deste sítio. 16Se não vieres connosco, quem ficará a saber que eu e o teu povo achámos graça aos teus olhos e que somos um povo separado, diferente de todos os outros povos da Terra?”
17E o Senhor disse-lhe: “Sim, farei o que me pediste, porque sem dúvida achaste graça perante mim, e és meu amigo.”
18Moisés então pediu para ver a glória de Deus. 19Mas o Senhor respondeu-lhe: “Farei passar diante de ti a minha bondade. Revelar-te-ei o significado do meu nome, o Senhor. Terei compaixão de quem eu quiser e serei misericordioso para com quem eu entender. 20Mas não poderás ver a glória do meu rosto, porque ninguém poderia vê-la e continuar a viver. 21Contudo, põe-te aqui, nesta rocha, junto a mim. 22Quando a minha glória passar, colocar-te-ei na fenda do rochedo e cobrir-te-ei com a minha mão, até eu ter passado. 23Depois de retirar a mão, ver-me-ás de costas, mas não a minha face.”
1Then the Lord said to Moses, “Leave this place, you and the people you brought up out of Egypt, and go up to the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ 2I will send an angel before you and drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 3Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people and I might destroy you on the way.”
4When the people heard these distressing words, they began to mourn and no one put on any ornaments. 5For the Lord had said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go with you even for a moment, I might destroy you. Now take off your ornaments and I will decide what to do with you.’ ” 6So the Israelites stripped off their ornaments at Mount Horeb.
The Tent of Meeting
7Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the “tent of meeting.” Anyone inquiring of the Lord would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp. 8And whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose and stood at the entrances to their tents, watching Moses until he entered the tent. 9As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the Lord spoke with Moses. 10Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshiped, each at the entrance to their tent. 11The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.
Moses and the Glory of the Lord
12Moses said to the Lord, “You have been telling me, ‘Lead these people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, ‘I know you by name and you have found favor with me.’ 13If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.”
14The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
15Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”
17And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”
18Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.”
19And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 20But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.”
21Then the Lord said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.”
