Lo puro y lo impuro
7:1-23 – Mt 15:1-20
1Los fariseos y algunos de los maestros de la Ley que habían llegado de Jerusalén se reunieron alrededor de Jesús, 2y vieron a algunos de sus discípulos que comían con manos impuras, es decir, sin habérselas lavado. 3(En efecto, los fariseos y los demás judíos no comen nada sin primero cumplir con el rito de lavarse las manos, ya que están aferrados a la tradición de los líderes religiosos. 4Al regresar del mercado, no comen nada antes de lavarse. Y siguen otras muchas tradiciones, tales como el rito de lavar copas, jarras y bandejas de cobre).7:4 bandejas de cobre. Var. bandejas de cobre y divanes. 5Así que los fariseos y los maestros de la Ley preguntaron a Jesús:
—¿Por qué no siguen tus discípulos la tradición de los líderes religiosos, en vez de comer con manos impuras?
6Él contestó:
—Tenía razón Isaías cuando profetizó de ustedes, hipócritas, según está escrito:
»“Este pueblo me honra con los labios,
pero su corazón está lejos de mí.
7En vano me adoran;
sus enseñanzas no son más que reglas humanas”.7:6,7 Is 29:13.
8Ustedes han desechado los mandamientos divinos y se aferran a las tradiciones humanas.
9Y añadió:
—¡Qué buena manera tienen ustedes de dejar a un lado el mandamiento de Dios para mantener7:9 mantener. Var. establecer. su propia tradición! 10Moisés dijo: “Honra a tu padre y a tu madre”,7:10 Éx 20:12; Dt 5:16. y también: “El que maldiga a su padre o a su madre será condenado a muerte”.7:10 Éx 21:17; Lv 20:9. 11Ustedes, en cambio, enseñan que un hijo puede decir a su padre o a su madre: “Cualquier ayuda que pudiera haberte dado es corbán” (es decir, ofrenda dedicada a Dios). 12Y en ese caso, ustedes ya no le permiten hacer nada por su padre ni por su madre. 13Así, por la tradición que se transmiten entre ustedes, anulan la palabra de Dios. Y hacen muchas cosas parecidas.
14De nuevo Jesús llamó a la multitud y dijo:
—Escúchenme todos y entiendan: 15Nada de lo que viene de afuera puede contaminar a una persona. Más bien, lo que sale de la persona es lo que la contamina. 167:16 Algunos manuscritos agregan lo siguiente: El que tenga oídos para oír, que oiga. Véase 4:23.
17Después de que dejó a la gente y entró en la casa, sus discípulos le preguntaron sobre la comparación que había hecho.
18—¿Tampoco ustedes pueden entenderlo? —dijo Jesús—. ¿No se dan cuenta de que nada de lo que entra en una persona puede contaminarla? 19Porque no entra en su corazón, sino en su estómago, y después va a dar a la letrina.
Con esto Jesús declaraba limpios todos los alimentos. 20Luego añadió:
—Lo que sale de la persona es lo que la contamina. 21Porque de adentro, del corazón humano, salen los malos pensamientos, la inmoralidad sexual, los robos, los homicidios, 22los adulterios, la avaricia, la maldad, el engaño, el libertinaje, la envidia, la calumnia, la arrogancia y la necedad. 23Todos estos males vienen de adentro y contaminan a la persona.
La fe de una mujer sirofenicia
7:24-30 – Mt 15:21-28
24Jesús partió de allí y fue a la región de Tiro.7:24 de Tiro. Var. de Tiro y Sidón. Entró en una casa y no quería que nadie lo supiera, pero no pudo pasar inadvertido. 25De hecho, muy pronto se enteró de su llegada una mujer que tenía una pequeña hija poseída por un espíritu maligno, así que fue y se arrojó a sus pies. 26Esta mujer era griega, sirofenicia de nacimiento, y le rogaba que expulsara al demonio que tenía su hija.
27—Deja que primero se sacien los hijos —respondió Jesús—, porque no está bien quitarles el pan a los hijos y echárselo a los perros.
28—Sí, Señor —respondió la mujer—, pero hasta los perros comen debajo de la mesa las migajas que dejan los hijos.
29Jesús dijo:
—Por haberme respondido así, puedes irte tranquila; el demonio ha salido de tu hija.
30Cuando ella llegó a su casa, encontró a la niña acostada en la cama. El demonio ya había salido de ella.
Jesús sana a un sordomudo
7:31-37 – Mt 15:29-31
31Luego regresó Jesús de la región de Tiro y se dirigió por Sidón al lago de Galilea, internándose en la región de Decápolis. 32Allí llevaron un sordo tartamudo y suplicaron que pusiera la mano sobre él.
33Jesús lo apartó de la multitud para estar a solas con él, puso los dedos en sus oídos y tocó su lengua con saliva.7:33 con saliva. Lit. escupiendo. 34Luego, mirando al cielo, suspiró profundamente y dijo: «¡Efatá!», que significa «¡Ábrete!». 35Con esto, se le abrieron los oídos al hombre, se destrabó su lengua y comenzó a hablar normalmente.
36Jesús ordenó que no se lo dijeran a nadie, pero cuanto más se lo prohibía, tanto más lo seguían propagando. 37La gente estaba sumamente asombrada y decía: «Todo lo hace bien. Hasta hace oír a los sordos y hablar a los mudos».
What Makes People “Unclean”?
1The Pharisees gathered around Jesus. So did some of the teachers of the law. All of them had come from Jerusalem. 2They saw some of his disciples eating food with “unclean” hands. That means they were not washed. 3The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands to make them “clean.” That’s what the elders teach. 4When they come from the market, they do not eat unless they wash. And they follow many other teachings. For example, they wash cups, pitchers, and kettles in a special way.
5So the Pharisees and the teachers of the law questioned Jesus. “Why don’t your disciples live by what the elders teach?” they asked. “Why do they eat their food with ‘unclean’ hands?”
6He replied, “Isaiah was right. He prophesied about you people who pretend to be good. He said,
“ ‘These people honor me by what they say.
But their hearts are far away from me.
7Their worship doesn’t mean anything to me.
They teach nothing but human rules.’ (Isaiah 29:13)
8You have let go of God’s commands. And you are holding on to teachings that people have made up.”
9Jesus continued speaking, “You have a fine way of setting aside God’s commands! You do this so you can follow your own teachings. 10Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother.’ (Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16) He also said, ‘Anyone who asks for bad things to happen to their father or mother must be put to death.’ (Exodus 21:17; Leviticus 20:9) 11But you allow people to say that what might have been used to help their parents is Corban. Corban means A Gift Set Apart for God. 12So you no longer let them do anything for their parents. 13You make the word of God useless by putting your own teachings in its place. And you do many things like this.”
14Again Jesus called the crowd to him. He said, “Listen to me, everyone. Understand this. 15-16Nothing outside of a person can make them ‘unclean’ by going into them. It is what comes out of them that makes them ‘unclean.’ ”
17Then he left the crowd and entered the house. His disciples asked him about this teaching. 18“Don’t you understand?” Jesus asked. “Don’t you see? Nothing that enters a person from the outside can make them ‘unclean.’ 19It doesn’t go into their heart. It goes into their stomach. Then it goes out of the body.” In saying this, Jesus was calling all foods “clean.”
20He went on to say, “What comes out of a person is what makes them ‘unclean.’ 21Evil thoughts come from the inside, from a person’s heart. So do sexual sins, stealing and murder. 22Adultery, greed, hate and cheating come from a person’s heart too. So do desires that are not pure, and wanting what belongs to others. And so do telling lies about others and being proud and being foolish. 23All these evil things come from inside a person and make them ‘unclean.’ ”
Jesus Honors a Greek Woman’s Faith
24Jesus went from there to a place near Tyre. He entered a house. He did not want anyone to know where he was. But he could not keep it a secret. 25Soon a woman heard about him. An evil spirit controlled her little daughter. The woman came to Jesus and fell at his feet. 26She was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.
27“First let the children eat all they want,” he told her. “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
28“Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”
29Then he told her, “That was a good reply. You may go. The demon has left your daughter.”
30So she went home and found her child lying on the bed. And the demon was gone.
Jesus Heals a Man Who Could Not Hear or Speak
31Then Jesus left the area of Tyre and went through Sidon. He went down to the Sea of Galilee and into the area known as the Ten Cities. 32There some people brought a man to Jesus. The man was deaf and could hardly speak. They begged Jesus to place his hand on the man.
33Jesus took the man to one side, away from the crowd. He put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue. 34Jesus looked up to heaven. With a deep sigh, he said to the man, “Ephphatha!” That means “Be opened!” 35The man’s ears were opened. His tongue was freed up, and he began to speak clearly.
36Jesus ordered the people not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37People were really amazed. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes deaf people able to hear. And he makes those who can’t speak able to talk.”
