Conquista de los reinos del norte
1Cuando Jabín, rey de Jazor, se enteró de todo lo ocurrido, convocó a Jobab, rey de Madón, y a los reyes de Simrón y de Acsaf. 2También llamó a los reyes de la región montañosa del norte; a los de la región al sur del lago Quinéret;11:2 lago Quinéret. Es decir, lago de Galilea. a los de la llanura y a los de Nafot Dor,11:2 Nafot Dor. Alt. las alturas de Dor. al occidente. 3Llamó además a los cananeos de oriente y occidente, a los amorreos, a los hititas, a los ferezeos, a los jebuseos de las montañas y a los heveos que viven en las laderas del monte Hermón en Mizpa.
4Salieron con sus ejércitos, caballos y carros de guerra. Eran tan numerosos que parecían arena a la orilla del mar. 5Todos esos reyes formaron un solo ejército y acamparon junto a las aguas de Merón para pelear contra Israel.
6Entonces el Señor dijo a Josué: «No les tengas miedo, porque mañana, a esta hora, yo daré muerte a todos ellos delante de Israel. Ustedes, por su parte, romperán las patas de sus caballos e incendiarán sus carros de guerra».
7Así que Josué partió acompañado de sus guerreros y tomó por sorpresa a sus enemigos junto a las aguas de Merón. 8El Señor los entregó en manos de los israelitas, quienes los atacaron y persiguieron hasta la gran ciudad de Sidón, y hasta Misrefot Mayin y el valle de Mizpa al este, y no quedaron sobrevivientes. 9Josué cumplió con todo lo que el Señor había ordenado: rompió las patas de los caballos del enemigo e incendió sus carros de guerra.
10Al regreso Josué conquistó Jazor y mató a filo de espada a su rey, pues Jazor había sido cabecera de todos aquellos reinados. 11Los israelitas mataron a espada todo cuanto tenía vida. Arrasaron la ciudad y le prendieron fuego.
12Josué conquistó todas las ciudades de aquellos reinos junto con sus reyes; a estos mató a filo de espada, destruyéndolos por completo. Así obedeció Josué todo lo que Moisés, siervo del Señor, había mandado. 13Las ciudades que estaban sobre los cerros fueron las únicas que los israelitas no quemaron, excepto Jazor, que sí fue incendiada. 14Los israelitas tomaron como botín de guerra todas las pertenencias y el ganado de esas ciudades, pero mataron a todos los hombres a filo de espada, de modo que ninguno quedó con vida. 15Así como el Señor había ordenado a su siervo Moisés, también Moisés se lo ordenó a Josué. Y este, por su parte, cumplió al pie de la letra todo lo que el Señor había ordenado a Moisés.
Síntesis de la conquista
16Josué logró conquistar toda aquella tierra: la región montañosa, todo el Néguev, toda la región de Gosén, la llanura, el Arabá, la región montañosa de Israel y su llanura. 17También se apoderó de todos los territorios, desde la montaña de Jalac que se eleva hacia Seír, hasta Baal Gad en el valle del Líbano, a las faldas del monte Hermón. Josué capturó a todos los reyes de esa región y los ejecutó, 18después de combatir con ellos por largo tiempo. 19Ninguna ciudad hizo tratado de ayuda mutua con los israelitas, excepto los heveos de Gabaón. A todas esas ciudades Josué las derrotó en el campo de batalla, 20porque el Señor endureció el corazón de los enemigos para que entablaran guerra con Israel. Así serían exterminados sin compasión alguna, como el Señor había ordenado a Moisés.
21En aquel tiempo Josué destruyó a los anaquitas del monte Hebrón, de Debir, de Anab y de la región montañosa de Judá e Israel. Habitantes y ciudades fueron arrasados por Josué. 22Ningún anaquita quedó con vida en la tierra que ocupó el pueblo de Israel. Su presencia se redujo solo a Gaza, Gat y Asdod.
23Así logró Josué conquistar toda aquella tierra, conforme a la orden que el Señor había dado a Moisés, y se la entregó como herencia al pueblo de Israel, según la distribución tribal. Por fin, aquella región descansó de las guerras.
1And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, 2And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west, 3And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh. 4And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many. 5And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.11.5 met…: Heb. assembled by appointment
6¶ And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire. 7So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them. 8And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephoth-maim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.11.8 great Zidon: or, Zidonrabbah11.8 Misrephoth-maim: or, Salt pits: Heb. Burnings of waters 9And Joshua did unto them as the LORD bade him: he houghed their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.
10¶ And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms. 11And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.11.11 any…: Heb. any breath 12And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded. 13But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.11.13 in their…: Heb. on their heap 14And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to breathe.
15¶ As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.11.15 left…: Heb. removed nothing 16So Joshua took all that land, the hills, and all the south country, and all the land of Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same; 17Even from the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and smote them, and slew them.11.17 the mount…: or, the smooth mountain 18Joshua made war a long time with all those kings. 19There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle. 20For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.
21¶ And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities. 22There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained. 23So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.
