Saúl libera la ciudad de Jabés
1Najás, el amonita, subió contra Jabés de Galaad y la sitió. Los habitantes de la ciudad le dijeron:
—Haz un pacto con nosotros y seremos tus siervos.
2—Haré un pacto con ustedes —contestó Najás el amonita—, pero con una condición: que le saque a cada uno de ustedes el ojo derecho. Así dejaré en desgracia a todo Israel.
3—Danos siete días para que podamos enviar mensajeros por todo el territorio de Israel —respondieron los jefes de Jabés—. Si no hay quien nos libre de ustedes, nos rendiremos.
4Cuando los mensajeros llegaron a Guibeá, que era la ciudad de Saúl, y comunicaron el mensaje al pueblo, todos se echaron a llorar. 5En esos momentos Saúl regresaba del campo arreando sus bueyes y preguntó: «¿Qué le pasa a la gente? ¿Por qué están llorando?». Entonces contaron lo que habían dicho los habitantes de Jabés.
6Cuando Saúl escuchó la noticia, el Espíritu de Dios vino sobre él con poder. Enfurecido, 7agarró dos bueyes y los descuartizó, y con los mensajeros envió los pedazos por todo el territorio de Israel, con esta advertencia: «Así se hará con los bueyes de todo el que no salga para unirse a Saúl y Samuel».
El temor del Señor se apoderó del pueblo y todos ellos, como un solo hombre, salieron a la guerra. 8Saúl los reunió en Bézec para pasar revista, y había trescientos mil soldados de Israel y treinta mil de Judá. 9Luego dijo a los mensajeros que habían venido: «Vayan y díganles a los habitantes de Jabés de Galaad: “Mañana, cuando más calor haga, serán librados”».
Los mensajeros fueron y comunicaron el mensaje a los de Jabés. Estos se llenaron de alegría 10y dijeron a los amonitas: «Mañana nos rendiremos y podrán hacer con nosotros lo que bien les parezca».
11Al día siguiente, antes del amanecer,11:11 antes del amanecer. Lit. en la vigilia de la mañana. Saúl organizó a los soldados en tres escuadrones. Invadieron el campamento de los amonitas e hicieron una masacre entre ellos hasta la hora más calurosa del día. Los que sobrevivieron fueron dispersados, así que no quedaron dos hombres juntos.
Saúl es confirmado como rey
12El pueblo dijo entonces a Samuel:
—¿Quiénes son los que no querían que Saúl reinara sobre nosotros? Entréguenlos, que vamos a matarlos.
13—¡Nadie va a morir hoy! —intervino Saúl—. En este día el Señor ha librado a Israel.
14—¡Vengan! —dijo Samuel al pueblo—. Vamos a Guilgal para renovar el reino.
15Todos se fueron a Guilgal y allí, ante el Señor, confirmaron a Saúl como rey. También allí, ante el Señor, ofrecieron sacrificios de comunión; entonces Saúl y todos los israelitas celebraron la ocasión con gran alegría.

4¶ Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.
5And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh. 6And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly. 7And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.11.7 with…: Heb. as one man 8And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. 9And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.11.9 help: or, deliverance 10Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you. 11And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
12¶ And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death. 13And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel. 14Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there. 15And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
