El viñedo de Nabot
1Un tiempo después sucedió lo siguiente: Nabot, el jezrelita, tenía un viñedo en Jezrel, el cual colindaba con el palacio de Acab, rey de Samaria. 2Este dijo a Nabot:
—Dame tu viñedo para hacerme una huerta de hortalizas, ya que está tan cerca de mi palacio. A cambio de él te daré un viñedo mejor o, si lo prefieres, te pagaré lo que valga.
3Pero Nabot le respondió:
—¡El Señor me libre de venderle a usted lo que heredé de mis antepasados!
4Acab se fue a su casa deprimido y malhumorado porque Nabot, el jezrelita, le había dicho: «No puedo cederle a usted lo que heredé de mis antepasados». De modo que se acostó de cara a la pared y no quiso comer. 5Su esposa Jezabel entró y le preguntó:
—¿Por qué estás tan angustiado que ni comer quieres?
6—Porque le dije a Nabot, el jezrelita, que me vendiera su viñedo o que, si lo prefería, se lo cambiaría por otro; pero él se negó.
7Ante esto, su esposa Jezabel le dijo:
—¿Y no eres tú quien manda en Israel? ¡Levántate y come, que te hará bien! Yo te conseguiré el viñedo del tal Nabot.
8De inmediato escribió cartas en nombre de Acab, puso en ellas el sello del rey, y las envió a los jefes y nobles que vivían en la ciudad de Nabot. 9En las cartas decía:
«Decreten un día de ayuno y den a Nabot un lugar prominente en la asamblea del pueblo. 10Pongan frente a él a dos hombres perversos y háganlos testificar que él ha maldecido tanto a Dios como al rey. Luego sáquenlo y mátenlo a pedradas».
11Los jefes y nobles que vivían en esa ciudad acataron lo que Jezabel había ordenado en sus cartas. 12Decretaron un día de ayuno y le dieron a Nabot un lugar prominente en la asamblea. 13Llegaron los dos hombres perversos, se sentaron frente a él y lo acusaron ante el pueblo, diciendo: «¡Nabot ha maldecido a Dios y al rey!». Como resultado, la gente lo llevó fuera de la ciudad y lo mató a pedradas. 14Entonces le informaron a Jezabel: «Nabot ha sido apedreado y está muerto».
15Tan pronto como Jezabel se enteró de que Nabot había muerto a pedradas, dijo a Acab: «¡Vamos! Toma posesión del viñedo que Nabot, el jezrelita, se negó a venderte. Ya no vive; está muerto». 16Cuando Acab se enteró de que Nabot había muerto, fue a tomar posesión del viñedo.
17Entonces la palabra del Señor vino a Elías el tisbita y le dio este mensaje: 18«Ve a encontrarte con Acab, rey de Israel, que gobierna en Samaria. En este momento se encuentra en el viñedo de Nabot, tomando posesión de este. 19Dile que así dice el Señor: “¿No has asesinado a un hombre y encima te has adueñado de su propiedad?”. Luego dile que así también dice el Señor: “¡En el mismo lugar donde los perros lamieron la sangre de Nabot, lamerán también tu propia sangre!”».
20Acab respondió a Elías:
—¡Mi enemigo! ¿Así que me has encontrado?
—Sí —contestó Elías—, te he encontrado porque te has vendido para hacer lo que ofende al Señor. 21Y él ahora te dice: “Voy a enviarte una desgracia. Acabaré contigo y entre tus descendientes en Israel exterminaré hasta el último varón, esclavo o libre. 22Haré con tu familia lo mismo que hice con la de Jeroboán, hijo de Nabat, y con la de Basá, hijo de Ahías, porque has provocado mi ira y has hecho que Israel peque”.
23»Y en cuanto a Jezabel, el Señor dice: “Los perros se la comerán junto al muro de Jezrel”.
24»También a los familiares de Acab que mueran en la ciudad se los comerán los perros y a los que mueran en el campo se los comerán las aves del cielo».
25Nunca hubo nadie como Acab que, animado por Jezabel su esposa, se prestara para hacer lo malo ante los ojos del Señor. 26Su conducta fue repugnante, pues siguió a los ídolos, como lo habían hecho los amorreos, a quienes el Señor expulsó de la presencia de Israel.
27Cuando Acab escuchó estas palabras, se rasgó las vestiduras, se vistió de luto y ayunó. Dormía vestido así y andaba deprimido.
28Entonces la palabra del Señor vino a Elías el tisbita y le dio este mensaje: 29«¿Has notado cómo Acab se ha humillado ante mí? Por cuanto se ha humillado, no enviaré esta desgracia mientras él viva, sino que la enviaré a su familia durante el reinado de su hijo».
Naboth’s vineyard
1Some time later there was an incident involving a vineyard belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite. The vineyard was in Jezreel, close to the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. 2Ahab said to Naboth, ‘Let me have your vineyard to use for a vegetable garden, since it is close to my palace. In exchange I will give you a better vineyard or, if you prefer, I will pay you whatever it is worth.’
3But Naboth replied, ‘The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my ancestors.’
4So Ahab went home, sullen and angry because Naboth the Jezreelite had said, ‘I will not give you the inheritance of my ancestors.’ He lay on his bed sulking and refused to eat.
5His wife Jezebel came in and asked him, ‘Why are you so sullen? Why won’t you eat?’
6He answered her, ‘Because I said to Naboth the Jezreelite, “Sell me your vineyard; or if you prefer, I will give you another vineyard in its place.” But he said, “I will not give you my vineyard.” ’
7Jezebel his wife said, ‘Is this how you act as king over Israel? Get up and eat! Cheer up. I’ll get you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.’
8So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, placed his seal on them, and sent them to the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth’s city with him. 9In those letters she wrote:
‘Proclaim a day of fasting and give Naboth a prominent seat among the people. 10But put two scoundrels opposite him and get them to bring charges that he has cursed both God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death.’
11So the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth’s city did as Jezebel directed in the letters she had written to them. 12They proclaimed a fast and seated Naboth in a prominent place among the people. 13Then two scoundrels came and sat opposite him and brought charges against Naboth before the people, saying, ‘Naboth has cursed both God and the king.’ So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death. 14Then they sent word to Jezebel: ‘Naboth has been stoned to death.’
15As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned to death, she said to Ahab, ‘Get up and take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite that he refused to sell you. He is no longer alive, but dead.’ 16When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he got up and went down to take possession of Naboth’s vineyard.
17Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite: 18‘Go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who rules in Samaria. He is now in Naboth’s vineyard, where he has gone to take possession of it. 19Say to him, “This is what the Lord says: have you not murdered a man and seized his property?” Then say to him, “This is what the Lord says: in the place where dogs licked up Naboth’s blood, dogs will lick up your blood – yes, yours!” ’
20Ahab said to Elijah, ‘So you have found me, my enemy!’
‘I have found you,’ he answered, ‘because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord. 21He says, “I am going to bring disaster on you. I will wipe out your descendants and cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel – slave or free.21:21 Or Israel – every ruler or leader 22I will make your house like that of Jeroboam son of Nebat and that of Baasha son of Ahijah, because you have aroused my anger and have caused Israel to sin.”
23‘And also concerning Jezebel the Lord says: “Dogs will devour Jezebel by the wall of21:23 Most Hebrew manuscripts; a few Hebrew manuscripts, Vulgate and Syriac (see also 2 Kings 9:26) the plot of ground at Jezreel.”
24‘Dogs will eat those belonging to Ahab who die in the city, and the birds will feed on those who die in the country.’
25(There was never anyone like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, urged on by Jezebel his wife. 26He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols, like the Amorites the Lord drove out before Israel.)
27When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and fasted. He lay in sackcloth and went around meekly.
28Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite: 29‘Have you noticed how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself, I will not bring this disaster in his day, but I will bring it on his house in the days of his son.’
