O Sinal do Fim dos Tempos
(Mt 24.1-35; Lc 21.5-37)
1Quando ele estava saindo do templo, um de seus discípulos lhe disse: “Olha, Mestre! Que pedras enormes! Que construções magníficas!”
2“Você está vendo todas estas grandes construções?”, perguntou Jesus. “Aqui não ficará pedra sobre pedra; serão todas derrubadas.”
3Tendo Jesus se assentado no monte das Oliveiras, de frente para o templo, Pedro, Tiago, João e André lhe perguntaram em particular: 4“Dize-nos, quando acontecerão essas coisas? E qual será o sinal de que tudo isso está prestes a cumprir-se?”
5Jesus lhes disse: “Cuidado, que ninguém os engane. 6Muitos virão em meu nome, dizendo: ‘Sou eu!’ e enganarão a muitos. 7Quando ouvirem falar de guerras e rumores de guerras, não tenham medo. É necessário que tais coisas aconteçam, mas ainda não é o fim. 8Nação se levantará contra nação, e reino contra reino. Haverá terremotos em vários lugares e também fomes. Essas coisas são o início das dores.
9“Fiquem atentos, pois vocês serão entregues aos tribunais e serão açoitados nas sinagogas. Por minha causa vocês serão levados à presença de governadores e reis, como testemunho a eles. 10E é necessário que antes o evangelho seja pregado a todas as nações. 11Sempre que forem presos e levados a julgamento, não fiquem preocupados com o que vão dizer. Digam tão somente o que for dado a vocês naquela hora, pois não serão vocês que estarão falando, mas o Espírito Santo.
12“O irmão trairá seu próprio irmão, entregando-o à morte, e o mesmo fará o pai a seu filho. Filhos se rebelarão contra seus pais e os matarão. 13Todos odiarão vocês por minha causa; mas aquele que perseverar até o fim será salvo.
14“Quando vocês virem ‘o sacrilégio terrível’13.14 Dn 9.27; 11.31; 12.11 no lugar onde não deve estar—quem lê, entenda—então, os que estiverem na Judeia fujam para os montes. 15Quem estiver no telhado de sua casa não desça nem entre em casa para tirar dela coisa alguma. 16Quem estiver no campo não volte para pegar seu manto. 17Como serão terríveis aqueles dias para as grávidas e para as que estiverem amamentando! 18Orem para que essas coisas não aconteçam no inverno. 19Porque aqueles serão dias de tribulação como nunca houve desde que Deus criou o mundo até agora, nem jamais haverá. 20Se o Senhor não tivesse abreviado tais dias, ninguém sobreviveria13.20 Ou seria salvo. Mas, por causa dos eleitos por ele escolhidos, ele os abreviou. 21Se, então, alguém disser: ‘Vejam, aqui está o Cristo!’ ou: ‘Vejam, ali está ele!’, não acreditem. 22Pois aparecerão falsos cristos e falsos profetas que realizarão sinais e maravilhas para, se possível, enganar os eleitos. 23Por isso, fiquem atentos: avisei-os de tudo antecipadamente.
24“Mas, naqueles dias, após aquela tribulação,
“ ‘o sol escurecerá
e a lua não dará a sua luz;
25as estrelas cairão do céu
e os poderes celestes serão abalados’13.24,25 Is 13.10; 34.4.
26“Então verão o Filho do homem vindo nas nuvens com grande poder e glória. 27E ele enviará os seus anjos e reunirá os seus eleitos dos quatro ventos, dos confins da terra até os confins do céu.
28“Aprendam a lição da figueira: Quando seus ramos se renovam e suas folhas começam a brotar, vocês sabem que o verão está próximo. 29Assim também, quando virem estas coisas acontecendo, saibam que ele está próximo, às portas. 30Eu asseguro a vocês que não passará esta geração até que todas estas coisas aconteçam. 31Os céus e a terra passarão, mas as minhas palavras jamais passarão.
O Dia e a Hora São Desconhecidos
(Mt 24.36-51)
32“Quanto ao dia e à hora ninguém sabe, nem os anjos no céu, nem o Filho, senão somente o Pai. 33Fiquem atentos! Vigiem!13.33 Alguns manuscritos acrescentam e orem! Vocês não sabem quando virá esse tempo. 34É como um homem que sai de viagem. Ele deixa sua casa, encarrega de tarefas cada um dos seus servos e ordena ao porteiro que vigie. 35Portanto, vigiem, porque vocês não sabem quando o dono da casa voltará: se à tarde, à meia-noite, ao cantar do galo ou ao amanhecer. 36Se ele vier de repente, que não os encontre dormindo! 37O que digo a vocês, digo a todos: Vigiem!”
The destruction of the temple and signs of the end times
1As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!’
2‘Do you see all these great buildings?’ replied Jesus. ‘Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.’
3As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, 4‘Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?’
5Jesus said to them: ‘Watch out that no-one deceives you. 6Many will come in my name, claiming, “I am he,” and will deceive many. 7When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth-pains.
9‘You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
12‘Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 13Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
14‘When you see “the abomination that causes desolation”13:14 Daniel 9:27; 11:31; 12:11 standing where it13:14 Or he does not belong – let the reader understand – then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15Let no-one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. 16Let no-one in the field go back to get their cloak. 17How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 18Pray that this will not take place in winter, 19because those will be days of distress unequalled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now – and never to be equalled again.
20‘If the Lord had not cut short those days, no-one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. 21At that time if anyone says to you, “Look, here is the Messiah!” or, “Look, there he is!” do not believe it. 22For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 23So be on your guard; I have told you everything in advance.
24‘But in those days, following that distress,
‘ “the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
25the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.”13:25 Isaiah 13:10; 34:4
26‘At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.
28‘Now learn this lesson from the fig-tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it13:29 Or he is near, right at the door. 30Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
The day and hour unknown
32‘But about that day or hour no-one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33Be on guard! Be alert13:33 Some manuscripts alert and pray! You do not know when that time will come. 34It’s like a man going away: he leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.
35‘Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back – whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the cock crows, or at dawn. 36If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37What I say to you, I say to everyone: “Watch!” ’
