O Faraó Aumenta a Opressão
1Depois disso Moisés e Arão foram falar com o faraó e disseram: “Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: ‘Deixe o meu povo ir para celebrar-me uma festa no deserto’ ”.
2O faraó respondeu: “Quem é o Senhor, para que eu lhe obedeça e deixe Israel sair? Não conheço o Senhor e não deixarei Israel sair”.
3Eles insistiram: “O Deus dos hebreus veio ao nosso encontro. Agora, permite-nos caminhar três dias no deserto, para oferecer sacrifícios ao Senhor, o nosso Deus; caso contrário, ele nos atingirá com pragas ou com a espada”.
4Mas o rei do Egito respondeu: “Moisés e Arão, por que vocês estão fazendo o povo interromper suas tarefas? Voltem ao trabalho!” 5E acrescentou: “Essa gente já é tão numerosa, e vocês ainda os fazem parar de trabalhar!”
6No mesmo dia o faraó deu a seguinte ordem aos feitores e capatazes responsáveis pelo povo: 7“Não forneçam mais palha ao povo para fazer tijolos, como faziam antes. Eles que tratem de ajuntar palha! 8Mas exijam que continuem a fazer a mesma quantidade de tijolos; não reduzam a cota. São preguiçosos, e por isso estão clamando: ‘Iremos oferecer sacrifícios ao nosso Deus’. 9Aumentem a carga de trabalho dessa gente para que cumpram suas tarefas e não deem atenção a mentiras”.
10Os feitores e os capatazes foram dizer ao povo: “Assim diz o faraó: ‘Já não darei palha a vocês. 11Saiam e recolham-na onde puderem achá-la, pois o trabalho de vocês em nada será reduzido’ ”. 12O povo, então, espalhou-se por todo o Egito, a fim de ajuntar restolho em lugar da palha. 13Enquanto isso, os feitores os pressionavam, dizendo: “Completem a mesma tarefa diária que foi exigida de vocês quando tinham palha”. 14Os capatazes israelitas indicados pelos feitores do faraó eram espancados e interrogados: “Por que não completaram ontem e hoje a mesma cota de tijolos dos dias anteriores?”
15Então os capatazes israelitas foram apelar para o faraó: “Por que tratas os teus servos dessa maneira? 16Nós, teus servos, não recebemos palha, e, contudo, nos dizem: ‘Façam tijolos!’ Os teus servos têm sido espancados, mas a culpa é do teu próprio povo5.16 Ou a culpa é tua; ou ainda tu estás pecando contra o teu próprio povo”.
17Respondeu o faraó: “Preguiçosos é o que vocês são! Preguiçosos! Por isso andam dizendo: ‘Iremos oferecer sacrifícios ao Senhor’. 18Agora, voltem ao trabalho. Vocês não receberão palha alguma! Continuem a produzir a cota integral de tijolos!”
19Os capatazes israelitas se viram em dificuldade quando lhes disseram que não poderiam reduzir a quantidade de tijolos exigida a cada dia. 20Ao saírem da presença do faraó, encontraram-se com Moisés e Arão, que estavam à espera deles, 21e lhes disseram: “O Senhor os examine e os julgue! Vocês atraíram o ódio5.21 Hebraico: transformaram-nos em mau cheiro para o. do faraó e dos seus conselheiros sobre nós, e lhes puseram nas mãos uma espada para que nos matem”.
Deus Anuncia Libertação
22Moisés voltou-se para o Senhor e perguntou: “Senhor, por que maltrataste este povo? Afinal, por que me enviaste? 23Desde que me dirigi ao faraó para falar em teu nome, ele tem maltratado este povo, e tu de modo algum libertaste o teu povo!”
Bricks Without Straw
1Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.’ ”
2Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.”
3Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword.”
4But the king of Egypt said, “Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!” 5Then Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working.”
6That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and overseers in charge of the people: 7“You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw. 8But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ 9Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.”
10Then the slave drivers and the overseers went out and said to the people, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you any more straw. 11Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.’ ” 12So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. 13The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, “Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.” 14And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed, demanding, “Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?”
15Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh: “Why have you treated your servants this way? 16Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, ‘Make bricks!’ Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.”
17Pharaoh said, “Lazy, that’s what you are—lazy! That is why you keep saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.’ 18Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks.”
19The Israelite overseers realized they were in trouble when they were told, “You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.” 20When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, 21and they said, “May the Lord look on you and judge you! You have made us obnoxious to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.”
God Promises Deliverance
22Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me? 23Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.”
