Paulus tackar Gud
4Jag tackar alltid min Gud när jag kommer ihåg dig i mina böner, 5eftersom jag får höra om din kärlek och din tro, din tro på Herren Jesus och din kärlek till alla de heliga. 6Jag ber att det stöd du har kunnat ge dem på grund av din tro ska få dem att inse hur mycket gott som finns i Kristus. 7Jag har själv blivit mycket glad och uppmuntrad av din kärlek, min bror, eftersom du har gett nytt mod åt de heliga.
Paulus vädjar för slaven Onesimos
8Även om jag i Kristus frimodigt skulle kunna befalla dig vad du kan förväntas göra, 9vill jag nu på grund av kärlek vädja till dig, jag Paulus, en gammal man som nu också är en fånge för Kristus Jesus skull.1:9 Alternativ översättning: Paulus, en representant för Jesus Kristus som nu också sitter i fängelse för hans skull. 10Jag vädjar till dig för Onesimos, mitt barn, som jag fått här i fängelset. 11Du hade inte särskilt stor nytta av Onesimos1:11 Namnet Onesimos betyder nyttig. förut, men nu har han blivit till verklig nytta för både dig och mig.
12När jag nu skickar honom tillbaka till dig är det som om jag sände en del av mig själv. 13Jag hade helst velat ha honom kvar här, så att han kunde hjälpa mig i ditt ställe, när jag nu sitter fängslad för evangeliets skull. 14Men jag ville inte göra någonting utan att först ha fått ditt tillstånd. Om du gör något gott ska det ju inte vara av tvång, utan av fri vilja. 15Kanske var det därför han skildes från dig under en kort tid, för att du sedan skulle få honom tillbaka för alltid, 16men inte längre som en slav, utan något mycket mer: en älskad bror. För mig är han mycket kär, men för dig måste han vara det ännu mer, både som människa och som en som tillhör Herren.
17Om du ser mig som din vän, så ta emot honom på samma sätt som du skulle ha tagit emot mig. 18Har han skadat dig på något sätt eller är skyldig dig något, så sätt upp det på min räkning. 19Jag, Paulus, skriver här med min egen hand1:19 Paulus dikterade brevet för en annan men skrev detta själv, för att Filemon skulle veta att det var Paulus som lovade att betala tillbaka.: Jag ska betala tillbaka. Att du sedan har en ännu större skuld till mig – dig själv, är en annan sak. 20Ja, min bror, låt mig nu få nytta1:20 Möjligtvis en ytterligare ordlek med namnet Onesimus, jfr v. 11. av dig i Herren. Gör mig lättad och glad för Kristus skull.
21Detta skriver jag, fullt övertygad om att du kommer att göra det jag ber dig om och mer än så.

4I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers, 5Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints; 6That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. 7For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother. 8Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient, 9Yet for love’s sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ. 10I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds: 11Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me: 12Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels: 13Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel: 14But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly. 15For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; 16Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord? 17If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself. 18If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account; 19I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides. 20Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.
21Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say. 22But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.
23There salute thee Epaphras, my fellowprisoner in Christ Jesus; 24Marcus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lucas, my fellowlabourers. 25The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
