1Herrens ord kom till mig: 2”Du människa, vänd dig mot Jerusalem och predika mot helgedomarna och profetera mot Israels land. 3Säg till Israels land: Så säger Herren: ’Jag är emot dig. Jag ska dra mitt svärd ur skidan och utrota både rättfärdiga och gudlösa hos dig. 4Då jag ska utrota både rättfärdiga och gudlösa hos dig, ska mitt svärd dras ut ur skidan mot allt levande från söder till norr. 5Alla ska då inse att jag, Herren, har dragit mitt svärd ur skidan, och det ska inte återvända.’
6Därför ska du, människa, klaga. Klaga bittert, av förtvivlan inför dem! 7När de frågar dig varför du klagar, ska du svara: ’På grund av de nyheter som kommer. Alla ska drabbas av ångest och stå där handfallna. Alla ska bli modlösa, och det ska rinna längs allas ben21:7 Ordagrant: …allas knän ska bli som vatten. Se not till 7:17.. Det ska komma och är redan på väg, säger Herren, Herren.’ ”
8Herrens ord kom till mig: 9”Du människa, profetera och säg:
’Ett svärd har slipats och polerats,
10slipats för slakt,
polerats för att blixtra.
Ska vi glädja oss? Min sons spira föraktar allt av trä.21:10 Grundtextens innebörd av versens senare hälft är osäker. Möjligen vill Hesekiel med föraktet mot allt av trä säga att löftena till David inte är någon garanti för att folket skulle slippa en främmande invasion.
11Svärdet är lämnat att poleras,
att gripas med handen.
Svärdet har slipats och polerats,
gjorts i ordning för en dråpares hand.
12Ropa och jämra dig, du människa,
för det drabbar mitt folk
och alla Israels furstar.
Tillsammans med mitt folk
kastas de åt svärdet.
Slå dig därför för ditt bröst.21:12 Ett tecken på sorg och bedrövelse.

14Profetera, människa,
slå ihop dina händer!
Svärdet ska slå två, ja, tre gånger
för en dråpares svärd är det,
ett svärd för en massaker
runt omkring dem,
15så att deras hjärtan smälter av ångest
och många faller.
Mot alla deras portar
har jag satt en dråpares svärd.
Ve! Det är gjort för att blixtra
och draget för att slakta.
16Slå skarpt åt höger och slå åt vänster,
ja, vart än din egg riktar sig!
17Också jag ska slå ihop mina händer
och stilla min vrede.
Jag, Herren, har talat.”
18Herrens ord kom till mig: 19”Du människa, märk ut två vägar som den babyloniske kungens svärd kan följa, och som båda utgår från samma land. Sätt upp en vägvisare vid vägskälet till staden,21:19-20 Grundtexten är svårtolkad och översättningen därför osäker. 20och märk ut den väg som svärdet ska gå mot Rabba i ammoniternas land och mot Juda och det befästa Jerusalem. 21För kungen av Babylonien står vid vägskälet av de två vägarna för att bli spådd. Han kastar lott med pilar, rådfrågar sina avgudar och skådar i lever. 22I hans högra hand finns orakelsvaret: Jerusalem. Där ska han sätta upp murbräckor, ge befallning om slakt och höja krigsrop, sätta upp murbräckor mot portarna, kasta upp en vall och bygga en belägringsramp. 23Men det tycks vara ett falskt tecken för dem som svurit eder.21:23 Grundtextens innebörd är osäker. Men han ska påminna dem om deras skuld och ta dem till fånga.
24Därför säger Herren, Herren: ’Eftersom er skuld ständigt gör sig påmind genom ert uppenbara uppror och era synder visar sig i allt vad ni gör, ska ni på grund av detta tas till fånga.
25Du vanvördige och gudlöse furste över Israel, din tid är nu ute, det är dags för ditt straff! 26Så säger Herren, Herren: Ta av dig turbanen och kungakronan! Det ska inte förbli som det varit. Upphöj den förnedrade och förnedra den upphöjde! 27Allt ska jag lägga i ruiner, ja allt kommer att ligga i spillror. Men det ska inte ske förrän han kommer som jag har gett rätten att döma.’
28Du människa, profetera och säg: Så säger Herren, Herren om ammoniterna och deras hån:
’Ett svärd, ett svärd är draget för att slakta,
polerat för att förtära och flamma som blixten.21:28-32 Grundtextens innebörd är oklar.
29Man har sett falska syner om dig och spått lögner om dig,
att du ska sättas på de slagnas nacke, på de gudlösas,
vilkas tid nu är ute och vilkas tid för straff är inne.
30Stick tillbaka svärdet i skidan!
På den plats där du skapades
och i det land som du härstammar ifrån ska jag döma dig.
31Jag ska tömma ut min vrede över dig
och blåsa på min vredes glöd.
Jag ska överlämna dig åt brutala män,
som är mästare i att fördärva.
32Du är veden till elden, och ditt blod ska utgjutas i landet.
Ingen ska mer komma ihåg dig.

28¶ And thou, son of man, prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning the Ammonites, and concerning their reproach; even say thou, The sword, the sword is drawn: for the slaughter it is furbished, to consume because of the glittering: 29Whiles they see vanity unto thee, whiles they divine a lie unto thee, to bring thee upon the necks of them that are slain, of the wicked, whose day is come, when their iniquity shall have an end. 30Shall I cause it to return into his sheath?
