1Oare într-adevăr rostiți voi ceea ce este drept, conducătorilor1 Ebr.: elem, care poate însemna tăcere. De aici avem: Oare într-adevăr rostiți ce este drept, atunci când tăceți?, în ideea că cei desemnați pentru a face judecată tac atunci când ar trebui să facă dreptate. Sau acest termen este o scriere defectivă a lui elim (lit.: berbeci, termen folosit metaforic pentru conducători).?
Oare cu nepărtinire judecați voi, fii ai omului?1 Sau: judecați pe fiii omului.
2Dimpotrivă, în inimă săvârșiți nedreptăți,
iar cu mâinile împărțiți violența în țară.
3Cei răi se înstrăinează încă din pântec,
cei ce rostesc minciuni se rătăcesc încă de la naștere.
4Veninul lor este ca veninul șarpelui,
ca al cobrei surde care și‑a închis urechea,
5care nu aude glasul celor ce șoptesc,
oricât de iscusit ar fi cel care leagă prin descântece5 Vezi nota de la Deut. 18:11..
6Dumnezeule, zdrobește‑le dinții din gură!
Doamne, scoate colții acestor lei!
7Să se scurgă precum apa care trece!
Când întind arcul, fie‑le săgețile oarbe!
8Să fie ca un melc care se topește mergând,
ca stârpitura unei femei, care nu a văzut soarele!
9Înainte ca oalele voastre să simtă focul de spini, verzi sau uscați,
El îl va spulbera pe cel rău!9 Sensul versetului este nesigur.
10Cel drept se va bucura când se va vedea răzbunat,
când își va spăla picioarele în sângele celui rău.
11Atunci oamenii vor zice: „Sigur există un rod pentru cel drept!
Sigur există un Dumnezeu Care judecă pe pământ!“

1Do you rulers indeed speak justly?
Do you judge people with equity?
2No, in your heart you devise injustice,
and your hands mete out violence on the earth.
3Even from birth the wicked go astray;
from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.
4Their venom is like the venom of a snake,
like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,
5that will not heed the tune of the charmer,
however skilful the enchanter may be.
6Break the teeth in their mouths, O God;
Lord, tear out the fangs of those lions!
7Let them vanish like water that flows away;
when they draw the bow, let their arrows fall short.
8May they be like a slug that melts away as it moves along,
like a stillborn child that never sees the sun.
9Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns –
whether they be green or dry – the wicked will be swept away.58:9 The meaning of the Hebrew for this verse is uncertain.
10The righteous will be glad when they are avenged,
when they dip their feet in the blood of the wicked.
11Then people will say,
‘Surely the righteous still are rewarded;
surely there is a God who judges the earth.’
