1Efraim se hrănește cu vânt;
toată ziua aleargă după vântul de răsărit
și înmulțește minciuna și violența.
El a încheiat legământ cu Asiria
și a dus uleiul în Egipt.
2Domnul are o acuză de adus lui Iuda;
El îl va pedepsi pe Iacov2 Ebr.: Ya’aqob înseamnă cel care ține de călcâi (în sens figurat: înșelător). Vezi nota de la Gen. 25:26. după căile lui
și îi va răsplăti după faptele lui.
3Încă din pântec el l‑a apucat pe fratele său de călcâi,
iar când a fost în putere s‑a luptat cu Dumnezeu.
4S‑a luptat cu Îngerul și a învins;
a plâns și a căutat bunăvoință la El.
El L‑a găsit la Betel
și acolo a vorbit cu noi
5Domnul, Dumnezeul Oștirilor5 Ebr.: YHWH Elohe Ha‑Țebaot. Termenul ebraic pentru oștiri se poate referi: (1) la oștirile lui Israel (Ex. 7:4; Ps. 44:9); (2) la corpurile cerești (Gen. 2:1; Deut. 4:19; Is. 40:26); (3) la îngeri (Ios. 5:14; 1 Regi 22:19; Ps. 148:2). Acest titlu face referire, probabil, la suveranitatea lui Dumnezeu peste orice putere din univers.,
Care este cunoscut ca Domnul.
6Cât despre tine, întoarce‑te la Dumnezeul tău,
păstrează îndurarea și dreptatea
și nădăjduiește neîncetat în Dumnezeul tău.
7Efraim este un negustor
care are7 Sau: Canaan are. În limba ebraică, prin Canaan se înțelege și negustor, deoarece fenicienii, locuitorii de pe coasta Canaanului, erau vestiți ca negustori. Probabil un joc de cuvinte, cu intenția de a arăta că Efraim nu este mai bun decât canaaniții. în mână talere înșelătoare;
îi place să jecmănească.
8Efraim zice:
„M‑am îmbogățit într-adevăr! Am făcut avere!
În toate câștigurile8 Sau: strădaniile. mele,
nu mi‑ar putea găsi vreo nelegiuire
care să fie păcat!“
9„Eu sunt Domnul Dumnezeul tău,
din țara Egiptului9 Sau, cf. LXX: tău, / Care te‑am scos din țara Egiptului..
Te voi face să locuiești iarăși în corturi,
ca în zilele de sărbătoare!
10Eu le‑am vorbit profeților;
Eu am înmulțit viziunile
și am vorbit în pilde prin profeți.“
11Este Ghiladul nelegiuit?
Cu siguranță va ajunge un nimic!
Ei jertfesc boi la Ghilgal,
de aceea altarele lor vor ajunge
mormane de pietre
pe brazdele câmpului.
12Iacov a fugit în țara Aramului12 Sau: Padan-Aram; sau: Aram-Naharaim (vezi Gen. 28:2 și nota); NV Mesopotamiei..
Israel a slujit pentru o soție;
pentru o soție a păzit el oile.
13Domnul l‑a scos pe Israel din Egipt printr‑un profet;
printr‑un profet a fost el păzit.
14Amarnic L‑a mai mâniat Efraim pe Dumnezeu!
Dar Stăpânul său va lăsa asupra lui vina sângelui vărsat
și va întoarce împotriva lui disprețul său.
1The people of Ephraim look to others for help.
It’s like chasing the wind.
The wind they keep chasing
is hot and dry.
They tell more and more lies.
They are always hurting others.
They make a peace treaty with Assyria.
They send olive oil to Egypt to get help.
2The Lord is bringing charges against Judah.
He will punish Jacob’s people
because of how they act.
He’ll pay them back
for the evil things they’ve done.
3Even before Jacob was born,
he was holding on to his brother’s heel.
When he became a man,
he struggled with God.
4At Peniel he struggled with the angel and won.
Jacob wept and begged for his blessing.
God also met with him at Bethel.
He talked with him there.
5He is the Lord God who rules over all.
His name is the Lord.
6People of Jacob, you must return to your God.
You must hold on to love and do what is fair.
You must trust in your God always.
7You are like a trader who uses dishonest scales.
You love to cheat others.
8People of Ephraim, you brag,
“We are very rich.
We’ve become wealthy.
And no one can prove we sinned
to gain all this wealth.”
9The Lord says,
“I have been the Lord your God
ever since you came out of Egypt.
But I will make you live in tents again.
That is what you did when you celebrated
the Feast of Booths in the desert.
10I spoke to the prophets.
They saw many visions.
I gave you warnings through them.”
11The people of Gilead are evil!
They aren’t worth anything!
Gilgal’s people sacrifice bulls to other gods.
Their altars will become like piles of stones
on a plowed field.
12Jacob ran away to the country of Aram.
There Israel served Laban to get a wife.
He took care of sheep to pay for her.
13The prophet Moses brought Israel up from Egypt.
The Lord used him to take care of them.
14But Ephraim’s people have made the Lord very angry.
Their Lord will hold them accountable for the blood they’ve spilled.
He’ll pay them back for the shameful things they’ve done.
