Israeliții își mărturisesc păcatele
1În a douăzeci și patra zi a aceleiași luni, fiii lui Israel, încinși cu saci și având țărână pe cap, s‑au strâns laolaltă pentru ținerea unui post. 2Cei din sămânța lui Israel s‑au separat de toți străinii și, stând în picioare, și‑au mărturisit păcatele lor și nelegiuirile părinților lor. 3S‑au așezat la locurile lor și, timp de un sfert din zi, au citit din Cartea Legii Domnului, Dumnezeul lor. Apoi, într‑un alt sfert din zi, și‑au mărturisit păcatele și s‑au închinat Domnului, Dumnezeul lor.
4Iosua, Bani, Kadmiel, Șebania, Buni, Șerebia, Bani și Chenani s‑au urcat pe estrada leviților și au strigat cu glas tare către Domnul, Dumnezeul lor. 5Leviții Iosua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hașabnia, Șerebia, Hodia, Șebania și Petahia au zis:
„Ridicați‑vă și binecuvântați‑L pe Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, Care este din veșnicie în veșnicie!5 Sau: Ridicați‑vă și binecuvântați‑L pe Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, pentru totdeauna! Binecuvântat să‑Ți fie Numele cel slăvit, care este mai presus de orice binecuvântare și laudă! 6Tu ești Domnul și în afară de Tine nu este un altul! Tu ai făcut cerurile și cerurile cerurilor cu toată oștirea lor, pământul cu tot ce este pe el, mările cu tot ce este în ele. Tu dai viață tuturor acestora, iar oștirea cerurilor Ți se închină.
7Tu ești Domnul, Dumnezeul Care l‑ai ales pe Avram, Care l‑ai scos din Ur, din Caldeea, și i‑ai pus numele Avraam. 8Tu i‑ai găsit inima credincioasă înaintea Ta și ai încheiat cu el un legământ, potrivit căruia îi vei da seminței8 Termenul ebraic pentru sămânță este un singular care se poate referi atât la un singur urmaș, cât și la toți descendenții din linia genealogică a unei persoane (colectiv). Este foarte probabil ca termenul să exprime, în cele mai multe cazuri, o ambiguitate intenționată. În traducerea de față a fost redat fie literal, fie cu urmaș sau urmași, în funcție de contextul literal și de cel teologic. Apostolul Pavel (Gal. 3:16) aplică același termen, sămânță, lui Isus Cristos, argumentând exegetic că promisiunea făcută lui Avraam își găsește împlinirea supremă în Isus Cristos. lui țara canaaniților, a hitiților, a amoriților, a periziților, a iebusiților și a ghirgașiților. Ți‑ai ținut promisiunile, căci Tu ești drept.
9Apoi ai văzut asuprirea părinților noștri în Egipt și le‑ai auzit strigătul la Marea Roșie9 Ebr.: Yam Suf (lit.: Marea Trestiilor sau Marea Algelor– vezi Iona 2:5, unde același termen ebraic, suf, are sensul de alge). Denumirea de Marea Roșie a fost introdusă în traducerile moderne prin LXX și Vulgata. În VT însă, sintagma ebraică denumea actualul Golf Aqaba, la sud de Elat. Chiar și astăzi localnicii numesc Golful Aqaba Yam Suf. Vezi 1 Regi 9:26.. 10Ai făcut semne și minuni împotriva lui Faraon, împotriva tuturor slujitorilor săi și împotriva întregului popor din țara sa, căci ai știut cât de arogant s‑au purtat cu aceștia și Ți‑ai făcut un Nume, cum se știe astăzi. 11Ai despărțit marea înaintea lor, și ei au trecut prin mijlocul mării ca pe uscat; pe urmăritorii lor însă i‑ai aruncat în adâncuri ca pe o piatră în ape mari. 12Apoi i‑ai condus printr‑un stâlp de nor ziua, și printr‑un stâlp de foc noaptea, ca să le luminezi calea pe care mergeau.
13Ai coborât pe muntele Sinai și le‑ai vorbit din ceruri. Le‑ai dat reguli drepte, legi adevărate, hotărâri și porunci bune. 14Le‑ai făcut cunoscut Sabatul Tău cel sfânt și le‑ai dat porunci, hotărâri și o Lege prin mâna lui Moise, robul Tău. 15Le‑ai dat pâine din cer, atunci când le era foame, le‑ai scos apă din stâncă, atunci când le era sete și le‑ai spus să vină să ia în stăpânire țara pe care juraseși că le‑o vei da.
16Însă ei, părinții noștri, s‑au îngâmfat, și‑au înțepenit ceafa și n‑au ascultat de poruncile Tale. 17Au refuzat să asculte și nu și‑au amintit de lucrările Tale minunate, pe care le‑ai înfăptuit printre ei. Și‑au înțepenit ceafa și, în răzvrătirea lor, și‑au numit o căpetenie, ca să se întoarcă la robia lor. Dar Tu ești un Dumnezeu iertător, plin de har și milostiv, încet la mânie și plin de îndurare și nu i‑ai părăsit. 18Chiar și atunci când și‑au făcut un vițel turnat, zicând: «Acesta este Dumnezeul tău, Care te‑a scos din Egipt!» și s‑au făcut vinovați de multă blasfemie, 19Tu, în marea Ta îndurare, nu i‑ai părăsit în pustie. Stâlpul de nor n‑a încetat să‑i călăuzească ziua pe drum, iar stâlpul de foc n‑a încetat să le lumineze noaptea drumul pe care mergeau. 20Le‑ai dat chiar și Duhul Tău cel bun ca să‑i instruiască. Nu Ți‑ai retras mana de la gura lor și ai continuat să le dai apă ca să‑și potolească setea. 21Timp de patruzeci de ani le‑ai asigurat hrana în pustie și n‑au dus lipsă de nimic; hainele nu li s‑au învechit, iar picioarele nu li s‑au umflat.
22Le‑ai dat regate și popoare și ai împărțit între ei fiecare ținut.22 Lit.: colț. Astfel, ei au luat în stăpânire țara lui Sihon, adică țara regelui din Heșbon, și țara lui Og, regele Bașanului. 23Le‑ai înmulțit fiii ca stelele cerurilor și i‑ai adus în țara în care le‑ai zis părinților lor să intre ca s‑o ia în stăpânire. 24Fiii lor au intrat și au luat în stăpânire țara, iar Tu i‑ai smerit înaintea lor pe locuitorii țării, pe canaaniți, și ai dat în mâinile lor pe regii acestora și popoarele țării, ca să le faci pe plac. 25Au cucerit cetăți fortificate, pământuri roditoare, au luat în stăpânire case pline cu tot felul de bunuri, puțuri deja săpate, vii, măslini și o mulțime de pomi fructiferi. Au mâncat, s‑au săturat, s‑au îngrășat și s‑au desfătat datorită bunătății Tale celei mari.
26Dar apoi s‑au arătat neascultători, s‑au răzvrătit împotriva Ta, au aruncat înapoia lor Legea Ta, i‑au ucis pe profeții Tăi, care mărturiseau împotriva lor pentru a‑i întoarce la Tine, și s‑au făcut astfel vinovați de multă blasfemie. 27Atunci i‑ai dat pe mâna vrăjmașilor lor, care i‑au asuprit. Totuși, în vremea necazului lor, ei au strigat către Tine, iar Tu i‑ai auzit din ceruri. În marea Ta îndurare le‑ai dat izbăvitori care i‑au izbăvit din mâna vrăjmașilor lor.
28Când au avut odihnă însă, au săvârșit iarăși ce este rău înaintea Ta. Atunci i‑ai lăsat pe mâna dușmanilor lor, care au domnit peste ei. Dar ei s‑au întors și au strigat către Tine, iar Tu i‑ai auzit din ceruri și, în îndurarea Ta, i‑ai eliberat în numeroase rânduri.
29I‑ai avertizat să se întoarcă la Legea Ta, dar ei s‑au îngâmfat, n‑au ascultat de poruncile Tale și au păcătuit împotriva hotărârilor Tale, pe care, dacă omul le face va trăi prin ele. Și‑au întors umărul cu încăpățânare, și‑au înțepenit ceafa și n‑au ascultat. 30I‑ai îngăduit așa mulți ani, i‑ai avertizat prin Duhul Tău, prin profeții Tăi, dar ei tot nu au luat aminte, astfel că i‑ai dat pe mâna popoarelor străine. 31Cu toate acestea, în marea Ta îndurare, nu i‑ai nimicit, nici nu i‑ai părăsit, căci Tu ești un Dumnezeu plin de har și milostiv.
32Acum, Dumnezeul nostru, Dumnezeule cel Mare, Puternic și Înfricoșător, Cel Care ții legământul și îndurarea32 Sau: păstrezi cu loialitate legământul; sau: păstrezi legământul dragostei., nu privi ca puțin lucru toate greutățile prin care am trecut, atât noi, cât și regii noștri, conducătorii noștri, preoții noștri, profeții noștri și părinții noștri, tot poporul Tău, din zilele împăraților Asiriei și până în ziua aceasta! 33Cu privire la tot ce a venit peste noi, Tu ai fost drept, căci ai lucrat cu credincioșie, dar noi am făcut ceea ce este rău! 34Regii, conducătorii, preoții și părinții noștri nu au împlinit Legea Ta. N‑au dat ascultare poruncilor și înștiințărilor Tale prin care i‑ai avertizat. 35În regatul lor, în mijlocul multor bunătăți primite de la Tine, în țara cea întinsă și bogată pe care le‑o dăduseși, ei nu Ți‑au slujit și nu s‑au întors de la faptele lor cele rele.
36Și iată‑ne astăzi robi în țara pe care le‑ai dat‑o părinților noștri, ca să‑i mănânce roadele și bunătățile! Iată‑ne robi chiar în ea! 37Rodul ei îi îmbogățește pe împărații pe care i‑ai pus stăpâni peste noi din cauza păcatelor noastre. Ei stăpânesc după bunul lor plac asupra trupurilor noastre și asupra vitelor noastre, iar noi ne aflăm într‑un mare necaz.“
Poporul încheie o înțelegere
38Cu privire la toate acestea, noi am încheiat în scris o înțelegere de neclintit, pe document punându‑și pecetea conducătorii, leviții și preoții.

4¶ Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God.9.4 stairs: or, scaffold 5Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise. 6Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee. 7Thou art the LORD the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham; 8And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous: 9And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardest their cry by the Red sea; 10And shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them. So didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day. 11And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters. 12Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; 19Yet thou in thy manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to shew them light, and the way wherein they should go. 20Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst. 21Yea, forty years didst thou sustain them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies. 28But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly: 34Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them. 35For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works. 36Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it: 37And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress. 38And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it;
