Soarta cetății Ninive
1Vai de cetatea vărsătoare de sânge,
plină de minciună,
plină de jaf
și care nu renunță la a prăda!
2Se aude pocnetul biciului
și uruitul roții,
galopul cailor
și huruitul carelor!
3Călăreții se năpustesc,
săbiile scânteiază,
iar sulițele fulgeră!
Sunt o mulțime de morți,
grămezi de cadavre,
hoituri fără număr,
oameni care se împiedică de hoituri –
4și aceasta din cauza multelor curvii ale prostituatei,
cea grațioasă și plăcută, stăpâna vrăjitoriilor,
care vindea4 Sau: trăda; sau: subjuga. neamuri prin desfrânările ei
și clanuri prin vrăjitoriile ei4 Posibil o aluzie la cultul zeiței Iștar, zeița dragostei și a fertilității și la practica magiei, care era dominantă în Asiria..
5„Iată că sunt împotriva ta! zice Domnul Oștirilor.
Îți voi ridica poalele în cap5 Aceasta era pedeapsa aplicată prostituatelor și celor ce comiteau adulter.
și voi arăta neamurilor goliciunea ta,
iar regatelor – rușinea ta!
6Voi arunca spurcăciuni peste tine,
te voi înjosi
și te voi face o priveliște pentru toți.
7Atunci toți cei ce te vor vedea vor fugi de tine și vor zice:
«Ninive este pustiită! Cine o va plânge?»
Unde să‑ți caut mângâietori?“
8Ești tu mai bună decât No‑Amon8 Cu referire la Teba, o cetate importantă construită în Egiptul de Sus (sudul Egiptului), pe ambele maluri ale Nilului. Ea a fost cucerită și distrusă de asirieni în anul 663 î.Cr.,
cetatea care era așezată pe Nil,
înconjurată de ape,
a cărei fortăreață era marea8 Este vorba despre Nil, cea mai cunoscută apă pentru tebani, considerată o adevărată mare.

10Și totuși a fost exilată,
a trebuit să plece în captivitate!
Chiar și copiii ei au fost zdrobiți
la fiecare capăt de drum!
Au tras la sorți pentru fruntașii ei,
și toți mai marii ei au fost puși în lanțuri.
11Și tu te vei îmbăta
și te vei ascunde!
Și tu vei căuta un refugiu în fața dușmanului!
12Toate fortificațiile tale sunt ca niște smochini
plini cu cele dintâi roade;
dacă sunt scuturate,
ele cad în gura celui ce vrea să le mănânce.
13Iată, cei din poporul tău
sunt ca niște femei în mijlocul tău!
Porțile țării tale sunt larg deschise dușmanilor tăi;
focul le‑a mistuit zăvoarele.
14Scoate‑ți apă pentru asediu!
Întărește‑ți fortificațiile!
Calcă noroiul!
Frământă lutul!
Pregătește cuptorul de cărămidă!
15Acolo te va mistui focul,
iar sabia te va tăia;
te va devora, ca o lăcustă!
Înmulțiți‑vă ca lăcusta Ielek!
Înmulțiți‑vă ca lăcusta Arbe!15-17 Sensul exact al denumirilor în ebraică pentru cele două specii de lăcuste este nesigur.
16Ți‑ai înmulțit negustorii
mai mult decât stelele cerurilor.
Ei însă prădează ca lăcusta Ielek
și apoi zboară.

iar scribii17 Ofițeri care se ocupau cu recrutarea. tăi ca un roi de lăcuste
care se așază pe ziduri într‑o zi răcoroasă,
dar care, atunci când răsare soarele, zboară
și nu se mai cunoaște locul unde au fost.
18Păstorii18 Cu sensul de conducători; guvernatori. tăi au ațipit, împărate al Asiriei,
iar cei măreți ai tăi se odihnesc!
Poporul tău a fost împrăștiat pe munți
și nu este nimeni să‑i adune!
19Nu este alinare pentru rana ta,
iar lovitura‑ți este fatală!
Toți cei ce aud vești despre tine,
bat din palme,
căci peste cine nu s‑a abătut
răutatea ta neîncetată?!
