Al doilea discurs al lui Elifaz
1Atunci Elifaz temanitul a răspuns și a zis:
2„Răspunde oare înțeleptul cu o cunoștință deșartă
și să‑și umple pântecul cu vântul de răsărit?
3Să se apere folosind cuvinte nefolositoare
sau o vorbire fără de folos?
4Tu dai la o parte chiar și teama de Dumnezeu
și împiedici cugetarea înaintea lui Dumnezeu.
5Căci nelegiuirea ta îți învață gura,
și ai ales limba celor vicleni.
6Gura ta te condamnă, nu eu,
buzele tale mărturisesc împotriva ta.
7Crezi că tu te‑ai născut primul între oameni?
Ai fost adus pe lume înaintea dealurilor?
8Ai fost tu la sfatul lui Dumnezeu?
Tu ești singurul care are înțelepciune?
9Ce cunoști tu, și noi să nu cunoaștem?
Ce înțelegi tu, iar noi să nu putem?
10Între noi sunt oameni cu părul cărunt,
oameni mai bătrâni chiar decât tatăl tău.
11Sunt prea neînsemnate pentru tine mângâierile lui Dumnezeu
sau cuvintele care ți‑au fost spuse cu blândețe?
12De ce îți îndepărtezi inima?
Și ce înseamnă strălucirea ochilor tăi,
13de îți întărâți duhul împotriva lui Dumnezeu
și lași să‑ți iasă din gură astfel de cuvinte?
14Ce este omul ca să poată fi curat
și cel născut din femeie ca să fie drept?
15Dacă Dumnezeu nu Se încrede nici în sfinții Săi
și nici chiar cerurile nu sunt curate în ochii Săi,
16cu atât mai puțin omul care este mârșav și corupt,
care bea nedreptatea ca pe apă!
17Îți voi explica; ascultă‑mă
și îți voi istorisi ceea ce am văzut,
18ceea ce au istorisit oamenii înțelepți,
care nu au ascuns nimic din ce le‑au spus părinții lor,
19pentru că doar lor le‑a fost dată țara
și niciun străin n‑a trecut printre ei.
20Cel rău se chinuie în durere în toate zilele sale,
iar cel înspăimântător, în numărul de ani păstrați pentru el.
21Zgomote îngrozitoare îi umplu urechile;
când toate par bine, tâlharii îl atacă.
22El nu crede că se va întoarce din întuneric;
este însemnat pentru sabie.22 Sau: este supravegheat de către sabie.
23Aleargă încoace și încolo după pâine, zicând: «Unde e?»23 Sau: Aleargă încoace și încolo – hrană pentru vulturi.
Știe că ziua întunericului este aproape.
24Necazul și neliniștea îl înspăimântă,
se aruncă asupra lui ca un împărat gata de luptă,
25căci a ridicat mâna împotriva lui Dumnezeu
și s‑a mândrit înaintea Celui Atotputernic,
26și a alergat cu încăpățânare26 Lit.: cu gâtul. împotriva Lui,
cu grosimea marginilor scuturilor lui.
27Pentru că și‑a acoperit fața cu grăsime
și a adunat osânză pe coapse,
28va sălășlui în cetăți distruse,
în case nelocuite,
pregătite să ajungă un morman de pietre.
29Nu va mai fi bogat, nu‑i va mai rămâne averea,
și avuția lui nu va mai împânzi țara.
30Nu va scăpa de întuneric,
o flacără îi va usca mlădițele
și suflarea gurii lui Dumnezeu îl va îndepărta.
31Să nu se înșele încrezându‑se în deșertăciune,
căci deșertăciunea îi va fi răsplata.
32Va fi răsplătit înainte de vreme
și mlădițele lui nu vor înverzi.
33El va fi ca o viță ai cărei struguri necopți au fost scuturați,
și ca un măslin ale cărui flori au căzut.
34Căci gloata celor lipsiți de evlavie va ajunge stearpă
și focul va mistui corturile mitei.
35Ei concep necazul și dau naștere la nelegiuire;
pântecul lor pregătește înșelătoria.“
Eliphaz
1Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
2‘Would a wise person answer with empty notions
or fill their belly with the hot east wind?
3Would they argue with useless words,
with speeches that have no value?
4But you even undermine piety
and hinder devotion to God.
5Your sin prompts your mouth;
you adopt the tongue of the crafty.
6Your own mouth condemns you, not mine;
your own lips testify against you.
7‘Are you the first man ever born?
Were you brought forth before the hills?
8Do you listen in on God’s council?
Do you have a monopoly on wisdom?
9What do you know that we do not know?
What insights do you have that we do not have?
10The grey-haired and the aged are on our side,
men even older than your father.
11Are God’s consolations not enough for you,
words spoken gently to you?
12Why has your heart carried you away,
and why do your eyes flash,
13so that you vent your rage against God
and pour out such words from your mouth?
14‘What are mortals, that they could be pure,
or those born of woman, that they could be righteous?
15If God places no trust in his holy ones,
if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes,
16how much less mortals, who are vile and corrupt,
who drink up evil like water!
17‘Listen to me and I will explain to you;
let me tell you what I have seen,
18what the wise have declared,
hiding nothing received from their ancestors
19(to whom alone the land was given
when no foreigners moved among them):
20all his days the wicked man suffers torment,
the ruthless man through all the years stored up for him.
21Terrifying sounds fill his ears;
when all seems well, marauders attack him.
22He despairs of escaping the realm of darkness;
he is marked for the sword.
23He wanders about for food like a vulture;
he knows the day of darkness is at hand.
24Distress and anguish fill him with terror;
troubles overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack,
25because he shakes his fist at God
and vaunts himself against the Almighty,
26defiantly charging against him
with a thick, strong shield.
27‘Though his face is covered with fat
and his waist bulges with flesh,
28he will inhabit ruined towns
and houses where no-one lives,
houses crumbling to rubble.
29He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure,
nor will his possessions spread over the land.
30He will not escape the darkness;
a flame will wither his shoots,
and the breath of God’s mouth will carry him away.
31Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless,
for he will get nothing in return.
32Before his time he will wither,
and his branches will not flourish.
33He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes,
like an olive tree shedding its blossoms.
34For the company of the godless will be barren,
and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes.
35They conceive trouble and give birth to evil;
their womb fashions deceit.’
