Prolog
1Era un om în țara Uț, al cărui nume era Iov. Omul acesta era integru și drept. El se temea de Dumnezeu și se ferea de rău. 2I s‑au născut șapte fii și trei fiice. 3El avea șapte mii de oi, trei mii de cămile, cinci sute de perechi de boi, cinci sute de măgărițe și un număr mare de servitori. Era cel mai însemnat om dintre toți fiii Răsăritului. 4Fiii lui obișnuiau să meargă și să țină câte un ospăț în casa fiecăruia, în ziua cuvenită lui. Ei le chemau și pe cele trei surori ale lor ca să mănânce și să bea împreună cu ei. 5Când zilele fiecărui ospăț ajungeau la sfârșit, Iov îi chema și îi sfințea5 Verbul poate avea sensul de a pune pe cineva/ceva într‑o stare specială (fizic sau spiritual), a consacra, a pune deoparte pentru Dumnezeu (uneori printr‑un ritual de ungere cu ulei sau sânge, spălare și/sau rugăciune ori declarație publică).. El se scula dis‑de‑dimineață și aducea arderi‑de‑tot pentru fiecare dintre ei, zicând: „Poate că fiii mei au păcătuit și L‑au blestemat pe Dumnezeu în inimile lor.“ Așa făcea Iov în fiecare zi.
Primul necaz al lui Iov
6Într‑o zi, fiii6 LXX: îngerii; vezi și 2:1. lui Dumnezeu au venit pentru a se înfățișa înaintea Domnului. Satan6 Satan înseamnă vrăjmaș sau acuzator. Peste tot, în Iov, cuvântul este însoțit de articolul hotărât, spre deosebire de 1 Cron. 21:1; [peste tot în carte]. a venit și el în mijlocul lor.
7Domnul l‑a întrebat pe Satan:
– De unde vii?
Satan i‑a răspuns Domnului și a zis:
– De la cutreierarea pământului și de la plimbarea ce am făcut‑o pe întinsul lui.
8Domnul l‑a întrebat pe Satan:
– Ți‑ai îndreptat inima asupra robului Meu Iov?8 Lit.: Ți‑ai pus inima pe robul Meu Iov? Nu mai este nimeni ca el pe pământ, un om integru, drept, care se teme de Dumnezeu și se ferește de rău.
9Atunci Satan I‑a răspuns Domnuluiși a zis:
– Oare degeaba se teme Iov de Dumnezeu? 10Nu ai pus tu un gard de protecție în jurul lui, în jurul casei lui și în jurul a tot ce este al lui? Tu ai binecuvântat lucrul mâinilor lui și averile lui i s‑au înmulțit în țară. 11Dar ia întinde‑Ți mâna și atinge‑Te de tot ce are, și vei vedea dacă nu Te va blestema în față.
12Domnul i‑a zis lui Satan:
– Iată, îți dau pe mână tot ceea ce are, numai asupra lui să nu‑ți întinzi mâna!
Atunci Satan a plecat dinaintea Domnului.
13Într‑o zi, în timp ce fiii și fiicele sale mâncau și beau vin în casa fratelui lor, cel întâi născut, 14a venit la Iov un mesager care i‑a zis: „În timp ce boii tăi erau la plug, iar măgărițele pășteau lângă ei, 15niște șabeeni15 Probabil arabi din Șeba. s‑au năpustit asupra lor, i‑au luat, iar pe slujitori i‑au trecut prin ascuțișul sabiei. Doar eu am scăpat ca să te înștiințez.“ 16În timp ce acesta încă vorbea, un altul a venit și i‑a zis: „Focul lui Dumnezeu a căzut din ceruri și a ars oile și slujitorii și i‑a mistuit. Doar eu am scăpat ca să te înștiințez.“ 17În timp ce acesta încă vorbea, a venit un altul și i‑a zis: „Niște caldeeni17 Popor beduin până în sec. XI–X î.Cr., când se așază în sudul Mesopotamiei, devenind mai târziu nucleul Imperiului Babilonian., împărțiți în trei cete, au năvălit, ți‑au luat cămilele, iar pe slujitori i‑au trecut prin ascuțișul sabiei. Doar eu am scăpat ca să te înștiințez.“ 18În timp ce acesta încă vorbea, a venit un altul și i‑a zis: „Fiii și fiicele tale mâncau și beau vin în casa fratelui lor mai mare, întâiul născut. 19Și iată că un vânt puternic a suflat dinspre pustie, a izbit în cele patru colțuri ale casei și astfel casa s‑a prăbușit peste tineri și au murit. Doar eu am scăpat ca să te înștiințez.“
20Atunci Iov s‑a ridicat, și‑a sfâșiat mantia și și‑a ras capul. Apoi s‑a aruncat la pământ, s‑a închinat 21și a zis:
„Gol am ieșit din pântecul mamei mele
și gol mă voi întoarce în pământ21 Lit.: acolo.!
Domnul a dat, Domnul a luat,
fie Numele Domnului binecuvântat!“
22În toate acestea Iov n‑a păcătuit și n‑a pus nenorocirea pe seama lui Dumnezeu.
The Story Begins
1There was a man who lived in the land of Uz. His name was Job. He was honest. He did what was right. He had respect for God and avoided evil. 2Job had seven sons and three daughters. 3He owned 7,000 sheep and 3,000 camels. He owned 500 pairs of oxen and 500 donkeys. He also had a large number of servants. He was the most important man among all the people in the east.
4His sons used to give feasts in their homes on their birthdays. They would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5The time for enjoying good food would end. Then Job would make plans for his children to be made pure and “clean.” He would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them. He would do it early in the morning. He would think, “Perhaps my children have sinned. Maybe they have spoken evil things against God in their hearts.” That’s what Job always did for his children when he felt they had sinned.
6One day angels came to the Lord. Satan also came with them. 7The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”
Satan answered, “From traveling all around the earth. I’ve been going from one end of it to the other.”
8Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you thought about my servant Job? There isn’t anyone on earth like him. He is honest. He does what is right. He has respect for God and avoids evil.”
9“You always give Job everything he needs,” Satan replied. “That’s why he has respect for you. 10Haven’t you guarded him and his family? Haven’t you taken care of everything he has? You have blessed everything he does. His flocks and herds are spread all through the land. 11But now reach out your hand and strike down everything he has. Then I’m sure he will speak evil things against you. In fact, he’ll do it right in front of you.”
12The Lord said to Satan, “All right. I am handing everything he has over to you. But do not touch the man himself.”
Then Satan left the Lord and went on his way.
13One day Job’s sons and daughters were at their oldest brother’s house. They were enjoying good food and drinking wine. 14During that time a messenger came to Job. He said, “The oxen were plowing. The donkeys were eating grass near them. 15Then the Sabeans attacked us and carried off the animals. They killed some of the servants with their swords. I’m the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
16While he was still speaking, a second messenger came. He said, “God sent lightning from the sky. It struck the sheep and killed them. It burned up some of the servants. I’m the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
17While he was still speaking, a third messenger came. He said, “The Chaldeans separated themselves into three groups. They attacked your camels and carried them off. They killed the rest of the servants with their swords. I’m the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
18While he was still speaking, a fourth messenger came. He said, “Your sons and daughters were at their oldest brother’s house. They were enjoying good food and drinking wine. 19Suddenly a strong wind blew in from the desert. It struck the four corners of the house. The house fell down on your children. Now all of them are dead. I’m the only one who has escaped to tell you!”
20After Job heard all these reports, he got up and tore his robe. He shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground and worshiped the Lord. 21He said,
“I was born naked.
And I’ll leave here naked.
The Lord has given, and the Lord has taken away.
May the name of the Lord be praised.”
22In spite of everything, Job didn’t sin by blaming God for doing anything wrong.
