Pavel, în drum spre Ierusalim
1După ce ne‑am luat rămas bun de la ei, am plecat pe mare îndreptându‑ne direct spre Cos1 O insulă în Marea Egee.. În ziua următoare, am ajuns în Rodos, iar de acolo în Patara. 2Am găsit o corabie care se îndrepta spre Fenicia, ne‑am îmbarcat și am plecat. 3În zare ne‑a apărut insula Cipru și, lăsând‑o în stânga, am navigat spre Siria. Apoi ne‑am dat jos în Tyr, pentru că acolo urma să fie descărcată corabia. 4I‑am găsit pe ucenici și am rămas cu ei timp de șapte zile. Aceștia îi spuneau lui Pavel, după ce auziseră avertismentele Duhului, să nu se îmbarce spre Ierusalim. 5Când zilele petrecute cu ei s‑au încheiat, am plecat și ne‑am continuat călătoria. Toți bărbații, împreună cu soțiile și copiii, ne‑au însoțit până afară din cetate. Acolo, pe țărm, ne‑am pus în genunchi și ne‑am rugat. 6Apoi, ne‑am luat rămas bun unii de la alții, după care noi ne‑am urcat în corabie, iar ei s‑au întors la ale lor.
7Din Tyr am plecat mai departe, ajungând în Ptolemaida. I‑am salutat pe frați și am rămas cu ei timp de o zi. 8În ziua următoare, am plecat și ne‑am dus în Cezareea8, 16 Vezi nota de la 8:40.. Am intrat în casa lui Filip, evanghelistul, care era unul din cei șapte8 Filip era unul din cei șapte diaconi ai bisericii din Ierusalim., și am rămas la el. 9Acesta avea patru fiice fecioare care profețeau. 10Fiindcă am rămas acolo mai multe zile, un profet, pe nume Agab, s‑a coborât din Iudeea 11și a venit la noi. El a luat brâul lui Pavel și, legându‑și picioarele și mâinile, a zis: „Acestea sunt cuvintele pe care le spune Duhul Sfânt: «În felul acesta îl vor lega iudeii în Ierusalim pe omul căruia îi aparține brâul acesta și‑l vor preda în mâinile neamurilor!»“ 12Când am auzit aceste lucruri, atât noi, cât și localnicii l‑am rugat pe Pavel să nu se suie la Ierusalim. 13Atunci Pavel a răspuns: „Cum se face că plângeți așa și‑mi frângeți inima?! Eu sunt gata nu doar să fiu legat, ci chiar să și mor în Ierusalim pentru Numele Domnului Isus!“ 14Pentru că nu se lăsa convins, am tăcut, spunând doar: „Facă‑se voia Domnului!“
15După zilele acelea, ne‑am pregătit și ne‑am suit la Ierusalim. 16Au venit cu noi și câțiva ucenici din Cezareea și ne‑au condus la Mnason, un vechi ucenic din Cipru, la care urma să găzduim.
Pavel în Ierusalim
17Când am sosit în Ierusalim, frații ne‑au primit cu bucurie. 18A doua zi, Pavel a mers împreună cu noi la Iacov, și toți bătrânii18 Sau: prezbiterii. au venit acolo. 19După ce i‑a salutat, Pavel le‑a istorisit pe rând lucrurile pe care le făcuse Dumnezeu printre neamuri prin slujba lui. 20Când au auzit ei aceste lucruri, L‑au slăvit pe Dumnezeu și i‑au zis lui Pavel: „Vezi, frate, câte mii de iudei au crezut și toți sunt plini de zel pentru Lege! 21Lor însă li s‑a spus despre tine că‑i înveți pe toți iudeii din mijlocul neamurilor să se lepede de Moise, spunându‑le să nu‑și circumcidă copiii și să nu umble potrivit cu obiceiurile. 22Ce este de făcut? Sigur vor auzi că ai sosit. 23Fă deci ce‑ți spunem noi: avem aici patru bărbați care au făcut un jurământ23 Cu referire la jurământul de nazireat.. 24Ia‑i cu tine, curățește‑te împreună cu ei și cheltuie24 Vezi Num. 6:14-15. tu pentru ei ca să‑și radă capul. Și astfel vor ști toți că niciunul din lucrurile care li s‑au spus despre tine nu este așa, ci dimpotrivă, tu însuți umbli păzind Legea. 25Cu privire la neamurile care au crezut, noi am hotărât și le‑am trimis îndemnul să se ferească de ceea ce este jertfit idolilor, de sânge, de animale sugrumate25 Vezi nota de la 15:20. și de curvie.“
26Atunci Pavel i‑a luat pe acei bărbați și, a doua zi, după ce s‑a curățit împreună cu ei, a intrat în Templu și a anunțat când va fi sfârșitul zilelor de curățire, când urma să fie adusă o jertfă pentru fiecare dintre ei.
Arestarea lui Pavel
27Când cele șapte zile erau pe sfârșite, iudeii din Asia l‑au văzut pe Pavel în Templu. Ei au agitat toată mulțimea și au pus mâna pe el, 28strigând: „Bărbați israeliți, veniți în ajutor! Acesta este omul care‑i învață pe toți, pretutindeni, împotriva poporului nostru, împotriva Legii și împotriva acestui loc! Ba încă a adus și niște greci în Templu și a întinat acest loc sfânt!“ 29Căci îl văzuseră mai înainte în cetate pe Trofimos efeseanul împreună cu Pavel și credeau că Pavel îl adusese în Templu. 30Toată cetatea s‑a pus în mișcare, și poporul a alergat într-acolo. L‑au prins pe Pavel, l‑au târât afară din Templu, și au fost încuiate imediat ușile. 31În timp ce încercau să‑l omoare, s‑a dus vestea la tribunul cohortei31 Gr.: chiliarchos. Lat.: tribunus militaris, o funcție militară importantă, fiind un punct de pornire într‑o carieră politică. Tribunul era comandant peste 600-1000 de oameni. În cazul de față, este vorba despre Claudius Lisias (vezi F.A. 23:26), comandantul cohortei romane ce se afla cantonată în fortăreața Antonia. că întregul Ierusalim este cuprins de agitație. 32Acesta a luat imediat niște soldați și niște centurioni32 Ofițeri romani subalterni, comandanți peste aproximativ 100 de oameni. și a alergat la ei. Când i‑au văzut pe tribun și pe soldați, au încetat să‑l mai bată pe Pavel. 33Atunci tribunul s‑a apropiat, l‑a arestat pe Pavel și a poruncit să fie legat cu două lanțuri. Apoi a întrebat cine era și ce făcuse. 34Unii din mulțime strigau una, alții alta, așa că, din cauza tulburării, neputând să afle exact ce se întâmplase, a poruncit să fie dus în fort. 35Când a ajuns la trepte, Pavel a trebuit să fie dus de către soldați, din cauza violenței mulțimii. 36Căci mulțimea poporului mergea după el, strigând: „La moarte cu el!“
Pavel se adresează mulțimii
37Tocmai când urma să fie dus în fort, Pavel i‑a zis tribunului:
– Îmi este îngăduit să‑ți spun ceva?
Tribunul l‑a întrebat:
– Știi grecește? 38Deci nu ești tu egipteanul care, cu câtva timp în urmă, a pornit o răscoală și i‑a dus în pustie pe cei patru mii de asasini38 Sau: sicari, nume dat membrilor unei grupări naționaliste fanatice, ostilă Romei, care își asasinau oponenții politici. Denumirea este de origine latină și se referă la arma folosită de acești asasini: un pumnal scurt, încovoiat, numit sica.?
39Pavel i‑a răspuns:
– Eu sunt iudeu, din Tarsul Ciliciei, cetățean al unei cetăți nu lipsită de importanță39 Sursele istorice atestă importanța și privilegiile de care s‑a bucurat orașul Tars în timpul stăpânirii romane, mulți locuitori, printre care și iudei, primind cetățenia romană pentru ei și pentru urmașii lor.. Te rog fierbinte, dă‑mi voie să vorbesc poporului!
40Tribunul i‑a dat voie, iar Pavel, stând în picioare pe trepte, a făcut poporului semn cu mâna. Când s‑a făcut tăcere deplină, li s‑a adresat în limba ebraică astfel:
On to Jerusalem
1After we had torn ourselves away from them, we put out to sea and sailed straight to Kos. The next day we went to Rhodes and from there to Patara. 2We found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, went on board and set sail. 3After sighting Cyprus and passing to the south of it, we sailed on to Syria. We landed at Tyre, where our ship was to unload its cargo. 4We sought out the disciples there and stayed with them seven days. Through the Spirit they urged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem. 5When it was time to leave, we left and continued on our way. All of them, including wives and children, accompanied us out of the city, and there on the beach we knelt to pray. 6After saying goodbye to each other, we went aboard the ship, and they returned home.
7We continued our voyage from Tyre and landed at Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and sisters and stayed with them for a day. 8Leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea and stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist, one of the Seven. 9He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.
10After we had been there a number of days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11Coming over to us, he took Paul’s belt, tied his own hands and feet with it and said, ‘The Holy Spirit says, “In this way the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem will bind the owner of this belt and will hand him over to the Gentiles.” ’
12When we heard this, we and the people there pleaded with Paul not to go up to Jerusalem. 13Then Paul answered, ‘Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.’ 14When he would not be dissuaded, we gave up and said, ‘The Lord’s will be done.’
15After this, we started on our way up to Jerusalem. 16Some of the disciples from Caesarea accompanied us and brought us to the home of Mnason, where we were to stay. He was a man from Cyprus and one of the early disciples.
Paul’s arrival at Jerusalem
17When we arrived at Jerusalem, the brothers and sisters received us warmly. 18The next day Paul and the rest of us went to see James, and all the elders were present. 19Paul greeted them and reported in detail what God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry.
20When they heard this, they praised God. Then they said to Paul: ‘You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews have believed, and all of them are zealous for the law. 21They have been informed that you teach all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to turn away from Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or live according to our customs. 22What shall we do? They will certainly hear that you have come, 23so do what we tell you. There are four men with us who have made a vow. 24Take these men, join in their purification rites and pay their expenses, so that they can have their heads shaved. Then everyone will know there is no truth in these reports about you, but that you yourself are living in obedience to the law. 25As for the Gentile believers, we have written to them our decision that they should abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from sexual immorality.’
26The next day Paul took the men and purified himself along with them. Then he went to the temple to give notice of the date when the days of purification would end and the offering would be made for each of them.
Paul arrested
27When the seven days were nearly over, some Jews from the province of Asia saw Paul at the temple. They stirred up the whole crowd and seized him, 28shouting, ‘Fellow Israelites, help us! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against our people and our law and this place. And besides, he has brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holy place.’ 29(They had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with Paul and assumed that Paul had brought him into the temple.)
30The whole city was aroused, and the people came running from all directions. Seizing Paul, they dragged him from the temple, and immediately the gates were shut. 31While they were trying to kill him, news reached the commander of the Roman troops that the whole city of Jerusalem was in an uproar. 32He at once took some officers and soldiers and ran down to the crowd. When the rioters saw the commander and his soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.
33The commander came up and arrested him and ordered him to be bound with two chains. Then he asked who he was and what he had done. 34Some in the crowd shouted one thing and some another, and since the commander could not get at the truth because of the uproar, he ordered that Paul be taken into the barracks. 35When Paul reached the steps, the violence of the mob was so great he had to be carried by the soldiers. 36The crowd that followed kept shouting, ‘Get rid of him!’
Paul speaks to the crowd
37As the soldiers were about to take Paul into the barracks, he asked the commander, ‘May I say something to you?’
‘Do you speak Greek?’ he replied. 38‘Aren’t you the Egyptian who started a revolt and led four thousand terrorists out into the wilderness some time ago?’
39Paul answered, ‘I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no ordinary city. Please let me speak to the people.’
40After receiving the commander’s permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the crowd. When they were all silent, he said to them in Aramaic21:40 Or possibly Hebrew; also in 22:2:
