În Corint
1După aceea a plecat din Atena și s‑a dus în Corint. 2Acolo a întâlnit un iudeu pe nume Akyla, originar din Pont, care venise de curând din Italia împreună cu soția lui, Priscila2 Luca folosește diminutivul, Priscila, în timp ce Pavel folosește numele nediminutivat, Prisca (vezi Rom. 16:3-4; 1 Cor. 16:19; 2 Tim. 4:19)., deoarece Claudiu2 Vezi nota de la 11:28. poruncise ca toți iudeii să plece din Roma2 Edictul respectiv fusese dat în anul 49 d.Cr. (vezi Suetoniu, Viața lui Claudiu, 25).. Pavel s‑a dus la ei 3și, fiindcă aveau aceeași meserie, a rămas la ei și lucrau împreună. Căci meseria lor era aceea de a face corturi. 4În fiecare zi de Sabat, Pavel purta discuții în sinagogă și‑i convingea atât pe iudei, cât și pe greci.
5Dar atunci când Silas și Timotei s‑au coborât acolo din Macedonia, Pavel s‑a dedicat în întregime predicării, depunând mărturie înaintea iudeilor că Isus este Cristosul. 6Când i s‑au împotrivit și l‑au batjocorit, el și‑a scuturat praful de pe haine, zicând: „Sângele vostru să fie asupra capului vostru! Eu sunt curat. De acum încolo mă voi duce la neamuri!“
7Și, după ce a ieșit de acolo, a intrat în casa unuia pe nume Titius7 Unele mss conțin: Titus. Iustus, om devotat lui Dumnezeu, a cărui casă era lângă sinagogă. 8Crispos, conducătorul sinagogii, a crezut în Domnul împreună cu toată familia lui și, de asemenea, mulți dintre corintenii care îl auziseră pe Pavel, au crezut și ei și au fost botezați. 9Noaptea, Domnul i‑a vorbit lui Pavel într‑o viziune: „Nu te teme, ci vorbește și nu tăcea, 10căci Eu sunt cu tine și nimeni nu va pune mâna pe tine ca să‑ți facă rău. Vorbește, fiindcă am mult popor în această cetate!“ 11Astfel, Pavel a stat acolo un an și șase luni și i‑a învățat Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu.
Pavel înaintea proconsulului Galio
12În timp ce Galio era proconsul12 Vezi nota de la 13:7. Cunoaștem, dintr‑o inscripție descoperită la Delfi, că acest Galio a fost proconsul al Ahaiei între anii 51–52 d.Cr. al Ahaiei, iudeii s‑au ridicat într‑un singur gând împotriva lui Pavel, l‑au dus înaintea scaunului de judecată 13și au zis: „Acesta incită oamenii să se închine lui Dumnezeu într‑un fel care este împotriva Legii13 Sau: împotriva legii, fiind vorba despre legea romană. Iudaismul avea statutul de religio licita (religie acceptată de stat; vezi lucrarea lui Tertulian, Apologeticul), pe când creștinismul, delimitându‑se de iudaism, a devenit religio illicita (religie interzisă de stat).!“ 14Pavel tocmai voia să deschidă gura să vorbească, dar Galio le‑a zis iudeilor: „Dacă ar fi vorba de vreun delict sau de vreo ticăloșie gravă, v‑aș îngădui plângerea, iudeilor; 15dar, întrucât este o dispută cu privire la cuvinte, la nume și la Legea voastră, vă privește! Eu nu vreau să fiu judecător al acestor lucruri!“ 16Și i‑a alungat de la scaunul de judecată. 17Atunci ei l‑au apucat pe Sostenes, conducătorul sinagogii, și l‑au bătut chiar în fața scaunului de judecată, fără ca lui Galio să‑i pese de aceasta.
Pavel se întoarce în Antiohia
18Pavel a rămas destul de multe zile acolo. Apoi și‑a luat rămas bun de la frați și a plecat pe mare spre Siria, împreună cu Priscila și Akyla, după ce și‑a18 Gramatical, acțiunea se poate referi la Akyla, însă interpretarea tradițională optează pentru Pavel. ras capul în Chencrea18 Chencrea era portul de răsărit care deservea orașul Corint. Corintul era situat pe un istm, între Golful Corint, spre vest, și Golful Saronic, spre est, având câte un port la fiecare dintre cele două golfuri., căci făcuse un jurământ18 Poate fi vorba despre un jurământ de nazireat (vezi Num. 6:1-21) sau despre un jurământ personal, prin care Pavel își arăta mulțumirea față de ajutorul lui Dumnezeu în perioade dificile. Tăierea părului marca încheierea jurământului.. 19Când au ajuns în Efes, i‑a lăsat acolo pe însoțitorii săi, iar el a intrat în sinagogă și a purtat discuții cu iudeii. 20Aceștia l‑au rugat să rămână la ei mai mult timp, dar el n‑a acceptat, 21ci și‑a luat rămas bun de la ei, zicând: „Trebuie neapărat să țin la Ierusalim sărbătoarea care vine. Dacă Dumnezeu vrea, mă voi întoarce din nou la voi.“ Și a plecat din Efes pe mare. 22S‑a dat jos în Cezareea22 Vezi nota de la 8:40., s‑a suit la Ierusalim și a salutat biserica, iar apoi a coborât în Antiohia22 Cu referire la capitala Siriei antice.. 23După ce a petrecut un timp acolo, a plecat străbătând din loc în loc ținutul Galatiei și al Frigiei și întărindu‑i pe toți ucenicii.
Apollos
24Un iudeu pe nume Apollos, originar din Alexandria, care era un vorbitor elocvent24 Sau: un bărbat învățat. și tare în Scripturi, a venit în Efes. 25El era instruit în ce privește Calea Domnului, vorbea cu un duh înfocat și dădea învățătură cu acuratețe despre lucrurile privitoare la Isus, deși cunoștea numai botezul lui Ioan. 26A început să vorbească cu îndrăzneală în sinagogă, iar când Priscila și Akyla l‑au auzit, l‑au luat acasă și i‑au explicat și mai amănunțit Calea lui Dumnezeu. 27Pentru că el voia să treacă în Ahaia27 Provincie romană care avea capitala la Corint., frații l‑au încurajat și au scris ucenicilor să‑l primească bine. Când a ajuns, el le‑a fost de mare ajutor celor ce, prin har, deveniseră credincioși. 28Căci el îi înfrunta pe iudei în public, dovedind pe baza Scripturilor că Isus este Cristosul.
1After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth; 2And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them. 3And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers. 4And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks. 5And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ. 6And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.
7¶ And he departed thence, and entered into a certain man’s house, named Justus, one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue. 8And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized. 9Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: 10For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city. 11And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.
12¶ And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia, the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul, and brought him to the judgment seat, 13Saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law. 14And when Paul was now about to open his mouth, Gallio said unto the Jews, If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you: 15But if it be a question of words and names, and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters. 16And he drave them from the judgment seat. 17Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. And Gallio cared for none of those things.
18¶ And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow. 19And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews. 20When they desired him to tarry longer time with them, he consented not; 21But bade them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem: but I will return again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus. 22And when he had landed at Cæsarea, and gone up, and saluted the church, he went down to Antioch. 23And after he had spent some time there, he departed, and went over all the country of Galatia and Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples.
24¶ And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. 26And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly. 27And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace: 28For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.
