Deșertăciunea ordinii sociale
1M‑am uitat apoi și am văzut toate asupririle care se comit sub soare. Și iată că
lacrimile celor asupriți
nu aveau alinare;
puterea era de partea asupritorilor lor
și nu exista scăpare pentru cei persecutați.
2Atunci i‑am felicitat pe cei morți,
care au murit deja,
mai mult decât pe cei vii,
care sunt încă în viață.
3Dar mai bine decât pentru oricare dintre aceștia,
este pentru cel care nu s‑a născut încă,
pentru cel ce nu a văzut încă faptele rele
care sunt făcute sub soare.
4Am văzut că orice osteneală și orice îndemânare la lucru este din cauza invidiei dintre un bărbat și semenul său, iar aceasta este deșertăciune și goană după vânt.
5Nesăbuitul își încrucișează mâinile
și își mănâncă propria carne.
6Mai bine o mână plină de odihnă,
decât amândoi pumnii plini de osteneală
și goană după vânt!
7Am mai văzut o deșertăciune sub soare:
8există câte un om singur, care nu are pereche alături,
și nu are nici fiu și nici frate.
Totuși, toată munca lui nu are sfârșit,
iar ochii lui nu se satură de bogăție.
„Pentru cine mă ostenesc
și‑mi lipsesc sufletul de fericire?“
Și aceasta este o deșertăciune
și un lucru rău.
9Mai bine doi, decât unul,
pentru că doi obțin o plată mai bună pentru munca lor.
10Căci dacă vor cădea,
unul din ei îl va ridica pe prietenul său.
Dar vai de cel care cade
și nu există un altul care să‑l ridice!
11Tot astfel, dacă se culcă doi, se încălzesc,
dar dacă cineva este singur, cum se poate încălzi?
12Tot astfel, dacă pe unul singur îl împresoară cineva,
doi pot să i se împotrivească,
iar funia împletită în trei nu este ruptă ușor.
13Mai bine tânăr sărac, dar înțelept, decât rege bătrân și nesăbuit, care niciodată nu se lasă îndrumat, 14căci cel dintâi poate ajunge la domnie direct din temniță, chiar să se fi născut sărac în regatul celui din urmă. 15Am văzut cum toți cei vii, care umblă sub soare, l‑au urmat pe tânărul care este al doilea după rege, cel care va domni după acesta. 16Tot poporul și toți cei înaintea cărora mergea el erau fără număr.16 Lit.: fără sfârșit. Totuși, cei de după el nu se vor mai bucura de acest tânăr. Și aceasta este deșertăciune și goană după vânt!

4¶ Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. 7¶ Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun. 8There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.
9¶ Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. 10For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. 11Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? 12And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
13¶ Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.4.13 who…: Heb. who knoweth not to be admonished 14For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor. 15I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead. 16There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
