în zilele tinereții tale,
până nu vin zilele cele rele
și până nu se apropie anii când vei zice:
„Nu găsesc nicio plăcere în ei“;
2până nu se întunecă soarele și lumina, luna și stelele
și până nu se întorc norii de ploaie.
3În zilele acelea încep să tremure paznicii casei,
iar cei tari șovăiesc,
se opresc cei ce macină, împuținați fiind,
și se întunecă cei ce se uită pe ferestre,
4se închid cele două uși care dau în stradă
și scade sunetul morii.
Atunci, cineva se va trezi la ciripitul păsării,
dar glasul tuturor cântărețelor se va auzi înăbușit;
5se vor teme de înălțime,
iar pe drum vor fi terori.
Adu‑ți aminte de Creatorul tău,
până nu înflorește migdalul,
până nu se târăște lăcusta
și până nu se strică caperul5 Cu referire la fructul arbustului Capparis spinosa, folosit atât ca și condiment, cât și pentru proprietățile lui afrodisiace.,
căci fiecare merge spre casa cea veșnică,
iar cei ce jelesc cutreieră pe stradă;
6până nu se rupe funia de argint
și până nu se sparge vasul de aur;
până nu se sfărâmă urciorul la izvor
și până nu este zdrobită roata de la puț;
7până nu se întoarce țărâna în pământ, de unde a fost luată,
și până când suflarea nu se întoarce la Dumnezeu,
Cel Care a dat‑o.
8O, deșertăciune a deșertăciunilor! zice oratorul.
Totul este deșertăciune!
Epilog
9Pe lângă faptul că oratorul a fost un înțelept, el a învățat și cunoștința pe popor, culegând, cercetând și aranjând numeroase proverbe. 10Oratorul a căutat să găsească cuvinte plăcute și să scrie drept cuvintele adevărului.
11Cuvintele înțelepților sunt ca niște țepușe, iar stăpânii colecțiilor de proverbe sunt ca niște cuie bătute, date de un singur păstor. 12Dincolo de toate acestea, fiule, ia aminte: să scrii12 Lit.: a face. multe cărți este o activitate fără sfârșit și prea mult studiu este obositor pentru trup.
13Concluzia la tot ceea ce ai auzit este aceasta:
teme‑te de Dumnezeu
și păzește poruncile Lui,
căci aceasta este datoria fiecărui om.13 Sau: căci aceasta este întreaga obligație a omului.
14Fiindcă Dumnezeu va aduce la judecată fiecare lucrare,
tot ce este ascuns,
fie bine, fie rău.
1Remember your Creator.
Remember him while you are still young.
Think about him before your times of trouble come.

You will also be terrified because of danger in the streets.
Remember your Creator before the almond trees have buds on them.
That’s when grasshoppers will drag themselves along.
Old people will lose their desire.
That’s when people will go to their dark homes in the grave.
And those who mourn for the dead will walk around in the streets.
6Remember your Creator before the silver cord is cut.
Remember him before the golden bowl is broken.
The wheel will be broken at the well.
The pitcher will be smashed at the spring.
7Remember your Creator before you return to the dust you came from.
Remember him before your spirit goes back to God who gave it.
8“Meaningless! Everything is meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Nothing has any meaning.”
Have Respect for God and Obey His Commandments
9The Teacher was wise. He gave knowledge to people. He tried out many proverbs. He thought about them carefully. Then he wrote them down in order. 10He did his best to find just the right words. And what he wrote was honest and true.
11The sayings of those who are wise move people to take action. Their collected sayings are like nails pounded in firm and deep. These sayings are given to us by one shepherd. 12My son, be careful not to pay attention to anything added to them.
Books will never stop being written. Too much studying makes people tired.
13Everything has now been heard.
And here’s the final thing I want to say.
Have respect for God and obey his commandments.
This is what he expects of all human beings.
14God will judge everything people do.
That includes everything they try to hide.
He’ll judge everything, whether it’s good or evil.
