1Moise și bătrânii lui Israel au poruncit poporului, zicând: „Să păziți toate poruncile pe care vi le dau astăzi. 2În ziua în care veți traversa Iordanul în țara pe care ți‑o dă Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, să înalți niște pietre mari și să le tencuiești. 3Să scrii pe ele toate cuvintele acestei Legi, după ce vei traversa ca să intri în țara pe care ți‑o dă Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, țară în care curge lapte și miere, așa cum ți‑a spus Domnul, Dumnezeul părinților tăi. 4Când veți traversa Iordanul, să înălțați pe muntele Ebal aceste pietre despre care vă poruncesc astăzi, și să le tencuiești. 5Să zidești acolo un altar Domnului, Dumnezeul tău, un altar din pietre, peste care să nu treacă fierul.5 Sau: pietre care să nu fie cioplite. 6Să zidești un altar Domnului, Dumnezeul tău, din pietre întregi și să aduci pe el arderi‑de‑tot pentru Domnul, Dumnezeul tău. 7Să aduci jertfe de pace7 Adesea tradus prin jertfă de comuniune sau jertfă de mulțumire, deoarece poartă și aceste sensuri., să mănânci acolo și să te bucuri în prezența Domnului, Dumnezeul tău. 8Să scrii toate cuvintele acestei Legi pe pietrele acestea, gravându‑le clar și bine!“
Cele 12 blesteme rostite pe muntele Ebal
9Moise împreună cu preoții leviți au vorbit întregului Israel, zicând: „Fă liniște, Israel, și ascultă! În ziua aceasta, tu ai devenit poporul Domnului, Dumnezeul tău. 10Să asculți de glasul Domnului, Dumnezeul tău, și să împlinești poruncile și hotărârile Lui, pe care ți le dau astăzi!“
11În aceeași zi, Moise a poruncit poporului, zicând: 12„Când veți traversa Iordanul, cei ce vor sta pe muntele Garizim ca să binecuvânteze poporul să fie aceștia: Simeon, Levi, Iuda, Isahar, Iosif și Beniamin. 13Iar cei ce vor sta pe muntele Ebal ca să rostească blestemul să fie aceștia: Ruben, Gad, Așer, Zabulon, Dan și Neftali. 14Leviții să rostească și să spună cu glas tare tuturor oamenilor din Israel:
15«Blestemat este omul care‑și face un chip cioplit sau un idol turnat și‑l așază într‑un loc ascuns! Căci o astfel de lucrare a mâinilor acelui meșteșugar este o urâciune înaintea Domnului.»
Și tot poporul să răspundă: «Amin!»
16«Blestemat este cel ce‑și necinstește tatăl și mama!»
Și tot poporul să răspundă: «Amin!»
17«Blestemat este cel ce mută hotarul semenului său!»
Și tot poporul să răspundă: «Amin!»
18«Blestemat este cel care‑l face pe orb să rătăcească pe drum!»
Și tot poporul să răspundă: «Amin!»
19«Blestemat este cel ce se atinge de dreptul străinului, al orfanului și al văduvei!»
Și tot poporul să răspundă: «Amin!»
20«Blestemat este cel ce se culcă cu soția tatălui său, pentru că descoperă învelitoarea tatălui său!»
Și tot poporul să răspundă: «Amin!»
21«Blestemat este cel ce se culcă cu un animal!»
Și tot poporul să răspundă: «Amin!»
22«Blestemat este cel ce se culcă cu sora lui, fiica tatălui său sau a mamei sale!»
Și tot poporul să răspundă: «Amin!»
23«Blestemat este cel ce se culcă cu soacra lui!»
Și tot poporul să răspundă: «Amin!»
24«Blestemat este cel ce îl ucide pe semenul lui în ascuns!»
Și tot poporul să răspundă: «Amin!»
25«Blestemat este cel ce ia o mită ca să ucidă o persoană nevinovată!»
Și tot poporul să răspundă: «Amin!»
26«Blestemat este cel ce nu susține cuvintele acestei Legi, ca să le împlinească!»
Și tot poporul să răspundă: «Amin!»
The Altar on Mount Ebal
1Moses and the elders of Israel gave commands to the people. They said, “Obey all the commands we’re giving you today. 2You will go across the Jordan River. You will enter the land the Lord your God is giving you. When you do, set up some large stones. Put a coat of plaster on them. 3Write all the words of this law on them. Do it when you have crossed over into the land the Lord your God is giving you. It’s a land that has plenty of milk and honey. The Lord is the God of your people of long ago. He promised you that you would enter the land. 4After you have gone across the Jordan, set up those stones on Mount Ebal. Put a coat of plaster on them. We’re commanding you today to do that. 5Build an altar there to honor the Lord your God. Make it out of stones. Don’t use any iron tool on them. 6Use stones you find in the fields to build his altar. Then offer burnt offerings on it to the Lord your God. 7Sacrifice friendship offerings there. Eat them and be filled with joy in the sight of the Lord your God. 8You must write all the words of this law on the stones you have set up. Write the words very clearly.”
Curses for Not Obeying the Lord
9Then Moses and the priests, who are Levites, spoke to all the Israelites. They said, “Israel, be quiet! Listen! You have now become the people of the Lord your God. 10Obey him. Obey his commands and rules that we’re giving you today.”
11Here are the commands Moses gave the people that same day.
12You will go across the Jordan River. When you do, six tribes will stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people. Those tribes are Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin. 13The other six tribes will stand on Mount Ebal to announce some curses. Those tribes are Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali.
14The Levites will speak to all the Israelites in a loud voice. The Levites will say,
15“May anyone who makes a statue of a god and sets it up in secret be under the Lord’s curse. That statue is made by a skilled worker. And the Lord hates it.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
16“May anyone who brings shame on their father or mother be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
17“May anyone who moves their neighbor’s boundary stone be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
18“May anyone who leads blind people down the wrong road be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
19“May anyone who treats unfairly outsiders, widows, and children whose fathers have died be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
20“May anyone who sleeps with his stepmother be under the Lord’s curse. That man brings shame on his father by doing that.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
21“May anyone who has sex with animals be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
22“May anyone who sleeps with his sister be under the Lord’s curse. It doesn’t matter whether she is his full sister or his half sister.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
23“May anyone who sleeps with his mother-in-law be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
24“May anyone who kills their neighbor secretly be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
25“May anyone who accepts money to kill someone who isn’t guilty of doing anything wrong be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
26“May anyone who doesn’t honor the words of this law by obeying them be under the Lord’s curse.”
Then all the people will say, “Amen!”
