1Dacă un bărbat se va căsători cu o femeie și se va întâmpla ca ea să nu mai găsească bunăvoință înaintea lui1 Lit.: în ochii lui., pentru că acesta a descoperit ceva rușinos la ea, să‑i scrie o scrisoare de despărțire, să i‑o dea în mână și s‑o lase să plece din casa lui. 2Dacă ea a ieșit și a plecat din casa lui, va putea să se căsătorească cu un alt bărbat. 3Dacă al doilea soț o urăște, să‑i scrie o carte de despărțire, să i‑o dea în mână și s‑o lase să plece din casa lui. Sau dacă cel de‑al doilea soț va muri, 4atunci primul soț, care i‑a dat drumul, nu va mai putea să se recăsătorească cu ea, după ce ea s‑a necinstit. Aceasta ar fi o urâciune înaintea Domnului. Să nu aduci vreun păcat asupra țării pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, ți‑o dă ca moștenire.
5Dacă un bărbat și‑a luat de curând o soție, să nu iasă la război și să nu se pună asupra lui vreo povară. Timp de un an să fie scutit din cauza familiei și să‑și înveselească soția pe care și‑a luat‑o.
Reglementări privind dreptatea și grija pentru ceilalți
6Să nu iei drept garanție pietrele de moară – nici piatra de jos, nici piatra de deasupra – deoarece este ca și cum ai lua drept garanție viața cuiva.
7Dacă se va descoperi că un om l‑a furat pe unul din frații lui dintre fiii lui Israel și l‑a tratat ca pe un rob sau l‑a vândut, hoțul acela să moară. Astfel, să nimicești răul din mijlocul tău.
8Vegheați cu privire la plaga infecțioasă, păzindu‑vă bine și făcând tot ce v‑au învățat preoții, leviții! Aveți grijă să faceți ce le‑am poruncit. 9Adu‑ți aminte ce i‑a făcut Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, lui Miriam pe drum, la ieșirea voastră din Egipt.
10Când vei împrumuta cu ceva pe semenul tău, să nu intri în casa lui ca să iei lucrul stabilit drept garanție. 11Să stai afară, iar omul pe care l‑ai împrumutat să‑ți aducă afară lucrul stabilit drept garanție. 12Dacă omul este sărac, să nu te culci acoperindu‑te cu lucrul luat drept garanție de la el. 13La apusul soarelui să‑i dai neapărat înapoi garanția, ca să se culce în haina lui și să te binecuvânteze. Lucrul acesta este considerat dreptate de către Domnul, Dumnezeul tău.
14Să nu‑l asuprești pe zilierul sărac și nevoiaș, fie că este unul dintre frații tăi, fie că este vreun străin care locuiește în regiunea ta, în cetatea ta. 15Să‑i dai plata în fiecare zi înainte de apusul soarelui, pentru că este sărac și sufletul lui o dorește. Altfel, ar striga împotriva ta către Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, și te‑ai face vinovat de păcat.
16Să nu‑i omori pe părinți pentru copii și nici pe copii pentru părinți. Fiecare om să fie omorât pentru păcatul lui.
17Să nu pervertești dreptul străinului sau al orfanului și să nu iei drept garanție haina văduvei. 18Adu‑ți aminte că ai fost rob în Egipt, iar Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, te‑a răscumpărat de acolo. De aceea îți poruncește să împlinești poruncile acestea.
19Când îți vei secera recolta de pe câmpul tău și vei uita un snop pe câmp, să nu te întorci să‑l iei. Să rămână pentru străin, pentru orfan și pentru văduvă, pentru ca Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, să te binecuvânteze în toată lucrarea mâinilor tale. 20Când îți vei scutura măslinii, să nu mai culegi de pe ramuri ce a rămas în urma ta. When her first husband divorced her, she became “unclean.” Don’t bring sin on the land the Lord your God is giving you as your own.
5Suppose a man has just married his wife. Then don’t send him into battle. Don’t give him any other duty either. He’s free to stay home for one year. He needs time to make his new wife happy.
6Someone might borrow money from you and give you two millstones to keep until you are paid back. Don’t keep them. Don’t even keep the upper one. That person needs both millstones to make a living.
7Suppose someone is caught kidnapping another Israelite. And they sell or treat that person as a slave. Then the kidnapper must die. Get rid of that evil person.
8What about skin diseases? Be very careful to do exactly what the priests, who are Levites, tell you to do. You must be careful to obey the commands I’ve given them. 9Remember what the Lord your God did to Miriam on your way out of Egypt.
10Suppose your neighbor borrows something from you. And he offers you something to keep until you get paid back. Then don’t go into their house to get it. 11Stay outside. Let the neighbor bring it out to you. 12The neighbor might be poor. You might be given their coat to keep until you get paid back. Don’t go to sleep while you still have it. 13Return it before the sun goes down. They need it to sleep in and will thank you for returning it. The Lord your God will see it and know that you have done the right thing.
14Don’t take advantage of any hired worker who is poor and needy. That applies to your own people. It also applies to outsiders living in one of your towns. 15Give them their pay every day. They are poor and are counting on it. If you don’t pay them, they might cry out to the Lord against you. Then you will be guilty of committing a sin.
16Parents must not be put to death because of what their children do. And children must not be put to death because of what their parents do. People must die because of their own sins.
17Do what is right and fair for outsiders and for children whose fathers have died. Suppose a widow borrows something from you. And she offers to give you her coat until she pays you back. Don’t take it. 18Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. Remember that the Lord your God set you free from there. That’s why I’m commanding you to do those things.
19When you are gathering crops in your field, you might leave some grain behind by mistake. Don’t go back to get it. Leave it behind for outsiders and widows. Leave it for children whose fathers have died. Then the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do. 20When you knock olives off your trees, don’t go back over the branches a second time. Leave what remains for outsiders and widows. Leave it for children whose fathers have died. 21When you pick grapes in your vineyard, don’t go back over the vines a second time. Leave what remains for outsiders and widows. Leave it for children whose fathers have died. 22Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. That’s why I’m commanding you to do these things.
