Reglementări privind războiul
1Când vei ieși la război împotriva dușmanilor tăi și vei vedea cai și care și un popor mai numeros decât al tău, să nu te temi de ei, pentru că Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, Care te‑a scos din țara Egiptului, va fi cu tine. 2Când te apropii de momentul începerii luptei, preotul să vină și să vorbească poporului. 3Să le spună: «Ascultă, Israel! Astăzi porniți la război împotriva dușmanilor voștri. Să nu vi se înmoaie inima, să nu vă temeți, să nu vă înspăimântați și să nu vă îngroziți înaintea lor, 4fiindcă Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, va merge cu voi ca să lupte pentru voi împotriva dușmanilor voștri și să vă izbăvească!»
5Supraveghetorii să vorbească astfel către popor: «Este cineva care și‑a construit o casă nouă și nu a dedicat‑o? Să se întoarcă acasă, ca să nu moară în luptă și s‑o dedice un alt om. 6Cine a plantat o vie și nu s‑a bucurat încă de ea? Să se întoarcă acasă, ca să nu moară în luptă și un alt om să se bucure de ea. 7Cine s‑a logodit cu o femeie și nu s‑a căsătorit încă cu ea? Să se întoarcă acasă, ca să nu moară în luptă și un altul să se căsătorească cu ea.» 8După aceea, supraveghetorii să vorbească mai departe poporului: «Cine este fricos sau slab de inimă? Să plece și să se întoarcă acasă, ca să nu înmoaie inima fraților lui ca pe inima lui.» 9După ce supraveghetorii vor termina de vorbit poporului, să pună conducători în fruntea oștirii.
10Când te vei apropia de o cetate, ca să lupți împotriva ei, s‑o îndemni la pace. 11Dacă îți acceptă pacea și îți deschide porțile, atunci tot poporul care se găsește în ea să devină oamenii tăi de corvoadă și să‑ți slujească. 12Dacă nu va face pace cu tine, ci vrea să poarte război cu tine, atunci s‑o asediezi. 13Când Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, o va da în mâna ta, să treci prin ascuțișul sabiei toți bărbații din ea, 14iar femeile, copiii, animalele și tot ce va mai fi în cetate, toată prada, să le iei pentru tine ca pradă. Să mănânci prada luată de la dușmanii tăi, pe care ți‑a dat‑o Domnul, Dumnezeul tău. 15Așa să faci cu toate cetățile care sunt la distanță mare de tine și care nu fac parte din cetățile neamurilor din apropierea ta.
16Dar în cetățile acestor popoare, pe care Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, ți le dă ca moștenire, să nu lași în viață nimic care are suflare. 17Dimpotrivă, să‑i dai spre nimicire cu totul17 Vezi nota de la 2:34. pe hitiți, pe amoriți, pe canaaniți, pe periziți, pe hiviți și pe iebusiți, după cum ți‑a poruncit Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, 18ca nu cumva să vă învețe și pe voi să faceți toate urâciunile pe care ei le fac pentru dumnezeii lor și să păcătuiți astfel împotriva Domnului, Dumnezeul vostru.
19Când vei asedia o cetate timp de mai multe zile, fiind în război cu ea pentru a o cuceri, să nu distrugi pomii fructiferi, tăindu‑i cu securea. Să mănânci din ei și să nu‑i tai, căci este oare pomul de pe câmp un om ca să‑l asediezi? 20Doar copacii care nu fac roade bune de mâncat vor putea fi distruși sau tăiați, ca să poți construi fortificații împotriva cetății care este în război cu tine, până când aceasta va cădea.

10¶ When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it. 11And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee. 12And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it: 13And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword: 14But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.20.14 take: Heb. spoil 15Thus shalt thou do unto all the cities which are very far off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations. 16But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth: 17But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee: 18That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should ye sin against the LORD your God.
