Ezechia îl consultă pe Isaia
(Is. 37:1-20)
1Când regele Ezechia a auzit lucrul acesta, și‑a sfâșiat hainele, s‑a acoperit cu un sac și s‑a dus la Casa Domnului. 2I‑a trimis la profetul Isaia, fiul lui Amoț, pe Eliachim, cel ce răspundea de palat, pe scribul Șebna și pe cei bătrâni dintre preoți, acoperiți toți cu saci.
3Ei i‑au zis:
– Așa vorbește Ezechia: „Aceasta este o zi de necaz, de pedeapsă și de rușine, căci copiii sunt gata să iasă din pântec, dar nu mai este nicio putere pentru a le da naștere. 4Poate că Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, a auzit toate cuvintele lui Rab‑Șache, care a fost trimis de stăpânul său, împăratul Asiriei, pentru a‑L batjocori pe Dumnezeul cel Viu și poate că Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, îl va mustra pentru cuvintele pe care le‑a auzit. De aceea înalță o rugăciune pentru cei care au mai rămas!“
5Când slujitorii regelui Ezechia au venit la Isaia, 6acesta le‑a zis:
– Să‑i spuneți astfel stăpânului vostru: „Așa vorbește Domnul: «Să nu te temi din cauza cuvintelor pe care le‑ai auzit și cu care slujitorii împăratului Asiriei M‑au blasfemiat. 7Iată, voi pune în el un duh și astfel, la auzirea unui zvon, se va întoarce în țara lui. Și‑l voi face să cadă ucis de sabie în țara lui.»“
8Când Rab‑Șache a auzit că împăratul Asiriei plecase din Lachiș, s‑a întors și l‑a găsit pe acesta luptând împotriva Libnei.
9După aceea, împăratul Asiriei a auzit că Tirhaka, regele din Cuș9 De fapt, un faraon din Cuș (Etiopia și teritoriile învecinate), deoarece în vremea aceea Egiptul era condus de o dinastie cușită (etiopiană)., a ieșit să lupte împotriva lui, a trimis din nou mesageri la Ezechia, zicând: 10„Așa să‑i vorbiți lui Ezechia, regele lui Iuda: «Nu‑l lăsa pe Dumnezeul tău, în Care te încrezi, să te amăgească, zicând: ‘Ierusalimul nu va fi dat în mâna împăratului Asiriei.’ 11Iată, ai auzit ce au făcut împărații Asiriei tuturor țărilor cucerite, dându‑le spre nimicire11 Ebr.: haram/herem, termen care în contextul relației dintre Israel și Dumnezeu se referă la un lucru, un animal sau o persoană care erau închinate irevocabil Domnului, fie cu scopul nimicirii, precum în cazul acesta, fie ca dar, precum în alte cazuri. Ceea ce era herem îi aparținea de acum Domnului, fiind interzis uzului profan. Practica aceasta era întâlnită însă și la alte popoare din Orient.. Vei scăpa tu oare? 12Și‑au salvat, oare, dumnezeii neamurile pe care părinții mei le‑au distrus: pe Gozan, pe Haran, pe Rețef și pe fiii lui Eden, care erau în Tel‑Asar? 13Unde este regele Hamatului, regele Arpadului și regele cetății Sefarvayim, al Henei sau al Ivei?»“
Rugăciunea lui Ezechia
14Ezechia a luat scrisoarea din mâna mesagerilor și a citit‑o. Apoi s‑a suit la Casa Domnului și a întins scrisoarea înaintea Domnului. 15Ezechia s‑a rugat Domnului și a zis: „O, Doamne, Dumnezeul lui Israel, Tu, Care tronezi deasupra heruvimilor! Tu ești singurul Dumnezeu al tuturor regatelor pământului! Tu ai făcut cerurile și pământul! 16Doamne, pleacă‑Ți urechea și ascultă! Doamne, deschide‑Ți ochii și privește! Auzi cuvintele pe care Sanherib le‑a trimis ca să‑L batjocorească pe Dumnezeul cel Viu!
17Doamne, este adevărat că împărații Asiriei au pustiit neamurile și teritoriul lor 18și că le‑au aruncat dumnezeii în foc, însă ei i‑au distrus pentru că nu erau Dumnezeu, ci lucrări făcute de mâna omului; erau doar lemn și piatră. 19Acum, Doamne, Dumnezeul nostru, Te rugăm, izbăvește‑ne din mâna lui, ca să știe toate regatele pământului că doar Tu, Doamne, ești Dumnezeu!“
Profeția lui Isaia împotriva lui Sanherib
(Is. 37:21-35)
20Atunci Isaia, fiul lui Amoț, a trimis la Ezechia să i se spună: „Așa vorbește Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel: «Ți‑am auzit rugăciunea pe care Mi‑ai făcut‑o cu privire la Sanherib, împăratul Asiriei. 21Acesta este cuvântul pe care l‑a spus Domnul împotriva acestuia:
Fecioara, fiica Sionului,
te disprețuiește și își bate joc de tine.
Fiica Ierusalimului
dă din cap în timp ce fugi.21 Lit.: după tine.
22Pe Cine ai batjocorit și ai blasfemiat tu?
Împotriva Cui ți‑ai ridicat glasul?
Împotriva Cui ți‑ai înălțat mândru privirea?
Împotriva Sfântului lui Israel!
23Prin mesagerii tăi L‑ai batjocorit pe Stăpânul
și ai zis:
‘Cu mulțimea carelor mele
am urcat înălțimile munților
până la cele mai înalte piscuri ale Libanului!
I‑am tăiat cei mai înalți cedri
și cei mai aleși chiparoși.
Am ajuns la cele mai îndepărtate locuri
și la pădurea cea mai deasă.
24Am săpat fântâni
și am băut ape străine
și cu tălpile picioarelor mele
am secat toate pâraiele Egiptului.’
25N‑ai auzit?
Eu l‑am făcut demult;
din zile străvechi l‑am întocmit.
Acum însă l‑am adus să se împlinească,
astfel încât tu să prefaci cetățile fortificate
în mormane de dărâmături.
26Locuitorii lor sunt neputincioși,
sunt înspăimântați și făcuți de rușine.
Au ajuns ca iarba de pe câmp
și ca verdeața fragedă,
ca iarba de pe acoperișuri,
care se usucă înainte să crească.
27Dar Eu știu unde stai,
când ieși și când intri
și cât ești de furios pe Mine.
28Pentru că te‑ai mâniat pe Mine
și pentru că trufia ta a ajuns la urechile Mele,
voi pune veriga Mea în nasul tău
și zăbala Mea în gura ta
și te voi întoarce
pe drumul pe care ai venit.
29Acesta va fi semnul pentru tine, Ezechia:
anul acesta o să mâncați ce va crește de la sine,
iar în al doilea an – ce va răsări din ce a rămas.
Dar în al treilea an veți semăna și veți secera,
veți planta vii și le veți mânca roadele.
30O rămășiță a Casei lui Iuda, cei rămași,
vor prinde iarăși rădăcină dedesubt
și vor da rod deasupra.
31Căci din Ierusalim va ieși o rămășiță
și din muntele Sion o ceată de supraviețuitori.
Râvna Domnului Oștirilor va face lucrul acesta.»
32De aceea așa vorbește Domnul cu privire la împăratul Asiriei:
«Nu va intra în cetatea aceasta
și nu va trage nicio săgeată acolo;
nu va veni în fața ei cu vreun scut
și nu va ridica împotriva ei nicio rampă de asalt.
33Pe drumul pe care a venit, pe acela se va întoarce
și nu va intra în cetatea aceasta, zice Domnul.
34Eu voi apăra cetatea aceasta, ca s‑o izbăvesc,
de dragul Meu și de dragul lui David, robul Meu.»“

35În acea noapte, îngerul35 Sau: Îngerul. Vezi Gen. 16:7-13. Domnului a ieșit și a omorât în tabăra Asiriei o sută optzeci și cinci de mii de oameni. Când ceilalți s‑au sculat dis‑de‑dimineață, iată că toți erau niște trupuri moarte. 36Atunci Sanherib, împăratul Asiriei, și‑a ridicat tabăra și a plecat. El s‑a întors la Ninive și a locuit acolo. 37În timp ce se închina în templul zeului său Nisrok37 Numele acesta nu este atestat de către inscripțiile asiriene. Posibil o corupție a lui Nusku, zeu al luminii și al focului în mitologia orientală., fiii săi, Adra-Melek și Sarețer, l‑au ucis cu sabia și au fugit în țara Ararat. Și în locul lui a domnit fiul său Esar-Hadon37 Împărat al Asiriei și al Babilonului. [681–669 î.Cr.].
Jerusalem’s Deliverance Foretold
1When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the Lord. 2He sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and the leading priests, all wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. 3They told him, “This is what Hezekiah says: This day is a day of distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the moment of birth and there is no strength to deliver them. 4It may be that the Lord your God will hear all the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule the living God, and that he will rebuke him for the words the Lord your God has heard. Therefore pray for the remnant that still survives.”
5When King Hezekiah’s officials came to Isaiah, 6Isaiah said to them, “Tell your master, ‘This is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid of what you have heard—those words with which the underlings of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7Listen! When he hears a certain report, I will make him want to return to his own country, and there I will have him cut down with the sword.’ ”
8When the field commander heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish, he withdrew and found the king fighting against Libnah.
9Now Sennacherib received a report that Tirhakah, the king of Cush,19:9 That is, the upper Nile region was marching out to fight against him. So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah with this word: 10“Say to Hezekiah king of Judah: Do not let the god you depend on deceive you when he says, ‘Jerusalem will not be given into the hands of the king of Assyria.’ 11Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries, destroying them completely. And will you be delivered? 12Did the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my predecessors deliver them—the gods of Gozan, Harran, Rezeph and the people of Eden who were in Tel Assar? 13Where is the king of Hamath or the king of Arpad? Where are the kings of Lair, Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah?”
Hezekiah’s Prayer
14Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord. 15And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: “Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 16Give ear, Lord, and hear; open your eyes, Lord, and see; listen to the words Sennacherib has sent to ridicule the living God.
17“It is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste these nations and their lands. 18They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands. 19Now, Lord our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, Lord, are God.”
Isaiah Prophesies Sennacherib’s Fall
20Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I have heard your prayer concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria. 21This is the word that the Lord has spoken against him:
“ ‘Virgin Daughter Zion
despises you and mocks you.
Daughter Jerusalem
tosses her head as you flee.
22Who is it you have ridiculed and blasphemed?
Against whom have you raised your voice
and lifted your eyes in pride?
Against the Holy One of Israel!
23By your messengers
you have ridiculed the Lord.
And you have said,
“With my many chariots
I have ascended the heights of the mountains,
the utmost heights of Lebanon.
I have cut down its tallest cedars,
the choicest of its junipers.
I have reached its remotest parts,
the finest of its forests.
24I have dug wells in foreign lands
and drunk the water there.
With the soles of my feet
I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.”
25“ ‘Have you not heard?
Long ago I ordained it.
In days of old I planned it;
now I have brought it to pass,
that you have turned fortified cities
into piles of stone.
26Their people, drained of power,
are dismayed and put to shame.
They are like plants in the field,
like tender green shoots,
like grass sprouting on the roof,
scorched before it grows up.
27“ ‘But I know where you are
and when you come and go
and how you rage against me.
28Because you rage against me
and because your insolence has reached my ears,
I will put my hook in your nose
and my bit in your mouth,
and I will make you return
by the way you came.’
29“This will be the sign for you, Hezekiah:
“This year you will eat what grows by itself,
and the second year what springs from that.
But in the third year sow and reap,
plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
30Once more a remnant of the kingdom of Judah
will take root below and bear fruit above.
31For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant,
and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors.
“The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
32“Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the king of Assyria:
“ ‘He will not enter this city
or shoot an arrow here.
He will not come before it with shield
or build a siege ramp against it.
33By the way that he came he will return;
he will not enter this city,
declares the Lord.
34I will defend this city and save it,
for my sake and for the sake of David my servant.’ ”
35That night the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies! 36So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there.
37One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisrok, his sons Adrammelek and Sharezer killed him with the sword, and they escaped to the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son succeeded him as king.
