David, în slujba filistenilor
1David și‑a zis în inima lui: „Într‑o zi, voi fi spulberat de mâna lui Saul. Nimic nu este mai bine pentru mine decât să fug în țara filistenilor. Astfel, Saul va renunța să mă mai caute pe întreg teritoriul lui Israel și voi scăpa din mâna lui.“
2David s‑a ridicat și a trecut, împreună cu cei șase sute de bărbați care erau cu el, la Achiș, fiul lui Maoc, regele Gatului. 3David și oamenii lui au locuit cu Achiș în Gat, fiecare împreună cu familia lui, iar David împreună cu cele două soții ale sale: Ahinoam din Izreel și Abigail, fosta soție a lui Nabal, din Carmel. 4Când i s‑a spus lui Saul că David a fugit la Gat, acesta a încetat să‑l mai caute.
5David i‑a zis lui Achiș: „Te rog, dacă am găsit bunăvoință înaintea ta5 Lit.: în ochii tăi., să mi se dea un loc într‑una din cetățile țării și voi locui acolo. De ce să locuiască robul tău în cetatea regală, împreună cu tine?“ 6Astfel, în acea zi, Achiș i‑a dat Țiklagul. De aceea Țiklagul a rămas al regilor lui Iuda până în ziua aceasta. 7Perioada de timp7 Lit.: Numărul zilelor. în care David a locuit în țara filistenilor a fost de un an și patru luni. 8David și oamenii lui se suiau și năvăleau împotriva gheșuriților, a ghirziților și a amalekiților. Încă din vremuri străvechi, aceștia locuiau teritoriul dinspre Șur până în țara Egiptului. 9David pustia țara și nu lăsa în viață niciun bărbat și nicio femeie. Lua oile, vitele, măgarii, cămilele și hainele și se întorcea la Achiș.
10Când Achiș întreba: „Unde ați năvălit astăzi?“, David răspundea: „În Neghevul10 Ținutul pustiu din sudul Canaanului, între Beer-Șeba și Kadeș-Barnea. David among the Philistines
1But David thought to himself, ‘One of these days I shall be destroyed by the hand of Saul. The best thing I can do is to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me anywhere in Israel, and I will slip out of his hand.’
2So David and the six hundred men with him left and went over to Achish son of Maok king of Gath. 3David and his men settled in Gath with Achish. Each man had his family with him, and David had his two wives: Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail of Carmel, the widow of Nabal. 4When Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.
5Then David said to Achish, ‘If I have found favour in your eyes, let a place be assigned to me in one of the country towns, that I may live there. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?’
6So on that day Achish gave him Ziklag, and it has belonged to the kings of Judah ever since. 7David lived in Philistine territory for a year and four months.
8Now David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites, the Girzites and the Amalekites. (From ancient times these peoples had lived in the land extending to Shur and Egypt.) 9Whenever David attacked an area, he did not leave a man or woman alive, but took sheep and cattle, donkeys and camels, and clothes. Then he returned to Achish.
10When Achish asked, ‘Where did you go raiding today?’ David would say, ‘Against the Negev of Judah’ or ‘Against the Negev of Jerahmeel’ or ‘Against the Negev of the Kenites.’ 11He did not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to Gath, for he thought, ‘They might inform on us and say, “This is what David did.” ’ And such was his practice as long as he lived in Philistine territory. 12Achish trusted David and said to himself, ‘He has become so obnoxious to his people, the Israelites, that he will be my servant for life.’
