Јовова жалопојка
1Онда је Јов проговорио проклињући дан свог рођења. 2Рекао је:
3„Нек нестане дана у коме сам рођен
и ноћи када је речено: ’Зачело се мушко!’
4У таму нека се окрене тај дан.
Не марио Бог одозго за њега
и светлост га никада не обасјала.
5Зграбили га ноћ и тама најгушћа,
облак га прекрио
и све га помрчине дневне престравиле!
6Нек ноћ ону тама прогута,
нек не буде придодана данима годишњим,
нек не буде убројана месецима!
7Ево, ноћ та јалова нек буде,
повик среће не ушао у њу!
8Проклели је они који дан проклињу,
што су вољни левијатана да буде.
9Нека згасну звезде свитања њенога,
чекајући зору нека је не дочека,
не видела поглед праскозорја;
10јер ми није затворила врата од мајчиног крила
и сакрила није муку од очију мојих.
11Зашто нисам умро у утроби
и скончао из стомака кад сам изашао?!
12Зашто су ме прихватила колена
и зашто груди које сам сисао?
13Јер ја бих сада спокојно лежао,
спавао бих и у миру био
14с царевима и земаљским саветницима,
са онима што су себи обновили развалине;
15с кнезовима што имају злата,
што су сребром куће своје испунили.
16Или зашто нисам био мртворођенче замотано,
или попут дојенчади, што светла видела нису?!
17Тамо злобници престају са злобом,
тамо почивају изнурени.
18Затвореници су заједно спокојни
и не чују повик тлачитељев.
19Тамо су и велики и мали,
а роб се ослободио господара свога.
20Зашто се страдалнику даје светло
и живот људима огорчене душе;
21онима што за смрти жуде, а ње нема,
и траже је више него благо закопано;
22онима који се безмерно радују и ликују
јер су гроб пронашли;
23човеку чији је пут сакривен
и кога је Бог одасвуд заградио?
24Моме јелу претходи јечање моје
и мој се вапај ко вода излива.
25Јер ме снађе чег’ сам се бојао,
сустигло ме од чег’ сам стрепео!
26Немам мира, немам олакшања,
немам почивања, мука ме сустиже.“

11Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly? 12Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck? 13For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest, 14With kings and counsellors of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves; 15Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver: 16Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light. 17There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.3.17 weary: Heb. wearied in strength 18There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor. 19The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.
20Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; 21Which long for death, but it cometh not; and dig for it more than for hid treasures;3.21 long: Heb. wait 22Which rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave? 23Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in? 24For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like the waters.3.24 I eat: Heb. my meat 25For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.3.25 the thing…: Heb.
