Поэма о мудрости
1– Есть рудник для серебра
и для золота есть горн плавильный.
2Из земли добывают железо,
и плавят медь из руды.
3Тьме рудокоп полагает предел.
Ищет он в отдаленных пределах
руду в непроглядной мгле.
4Далеко от жилья он роет колодец,
в местах, что забыла стопа человека;
висит он и зыблется вдали от людей.
5Земля, на которой вырастает пища,
изнутри изрыта, будто огнем.

и в ней – золотой песок.
7Пути к ним не знает хищная птица,
соколиный глаз их не видел.
8Гордые звери их не топтали,
и лев по ним не ходил.
9Человек на гранит простирает руку
и с корнем вырывает горы.
10Он прорубает проходы в скалах,
и глаза его видят все их сокровища.
11Он останавливает28:11 Или: «ищет». истоки рек,
и сокровенное выносит на свет.
12Но где можно найти мудрость?
Где обитает разум?
13Не знает смертный ее дома28:13 Или: «ей цены».;
на земле живых ее не найти.
14Пучина скажет: «Во мне ее нет»;
и молвит море: «Не у меня она».
Мудрость ценнее драгоценных камней
15Ее не купить за червонное золото,
не отвесить цену ее серебром.
16Не купить ее ни за золото Офира,
ни за драгоценный оникс и сапфир.
17Не сравнить ее с золотом и кристаллом28:17 Букв.: «стеклом». В древнем мире стекло считалось редким и ценным материалом.,
на утварь из чистого золота не обменять.
18Что говорить о кораллах и яшме;
превыше рубинов стоимость мудрости.
19Не сравнить с ней топазы из Куша28:19 Или: «Нубии»; или: «Ефиопии».;
не купить ее за отменное золото.
20Откуда приходит мудрость?
Где обитает разум?
21Скрыта она от глаз всех живущих
и от птиц небесных утаена.
22Погибель и Смерть говорят:
«Мы слышали только слух о ней».
Только Бог знает пути мудрости
23Только Богу ведом к ней путь,
Он знает ее жилище,
24ведь Он озирает края земли
и видит все, что под небесами.
25Когда Он давал ветру силу
и водам ставил пределы,
26когда Он дождю предписал устав
и путь проложил для молний,
27Он увидел мудрость и восхвалил ее,
утвердил ее, испытал
28и сказал человеку так:
«Воистину, страх перед Владыкой – вот мудрость,
сторониться зла – это разум».

20Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding? 21Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.28.21 air: or, heaven 22Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears. 23God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof. 24For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven; 25To make the weight for the winds; and he weigheth the waters by measure. 26When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder: 27Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out.28.27 declare…: or, number it 28And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
