David derrota a los amalecitas
1Al tercer día David y sus hombres llegaron a Siclag, pero se encontraron con que los amalecitas habían invadido la región del Néguev y que, luego de atacar e incendiar a Siclag, 2habían tomado cautivos a las mujeres y a todos los que estaban allí, desde el más grande hasta el más pequeño. Sin embargo, no habían matado a nadie.
3Cuando David y sus hombres llegaron, encontraron que la ciudad había sido quemada y que sus esposas, hijos e hijas habían sido llevados cautivos. 4David y los que estaban con él se pusieron a llorar y a gritar hasta quedarse sin fuerzas. 5También habían caído prisioneras dos esposas de David, la jezrelita Ajinoán y Abigaíl, la viuda de Nabal de Carmel.
6David se angustió, pues la tropa hablaba de apedrearlo; y es que todos se sentían amargados por la pérdida de sus hijos e hijas. Pero cobró ánimo y puso su confianza en el Señor su Dios. 7Entonces dijo al sacerdote Abiatar, hijo de Ajimélec:
—Tráeme el efod.
Tan pronto como Abiatar se lo trajo, 8David consultó al Señor:
—¿Debo perseguir a esa banda de saqueadores? ¿Los voy a alcanzar?
—Persíguelos —respondió el Señor—. Vas a alcanzarlos y rescatarás a los cautivos.
9David partió con sus seiscientos hombres hasta llegar al arroyo de Besor. Allí se quedaron rezagados 10doscientos hombres que estaban demasiado cansados para cruzar el arroyo. Así que David continuó la persecución con los cuatrocientos hombres restantes.
11Los hombres de David se encontraron en el campo con un egipcio, y se lo llevaron a David. Le dieron de comer y de beber, 12y le ofrecieron una torta de higo y dos tortas de uvas pasas, pues hacía tres días y tres noches que no había comido ni bebido nada. En cuanto el egipcio comió, recobró las fuerzas.
13—¿A quién perteneces? —preguntó David—. ¿De dónde vienes?
—Soy egipcio —respondió—, esclavo de un amalecita. Hace tres días caí enfermo, y mi amo me abandonó. 14Habíamos invadido la región sur de los quereteos, de Judá y de Caleb; también incendiamos Siclag.
15—Guíanos adonde está esa banda de saqueadores —dijo David.
—Júreme usted por Dios —suplicó el egipcio—, que no me matará ni me entregará a mi amo. Con esa condición, lo llevo adonde está la banda.
16El egipcio los guio hasta los amalecitas, los cuales estaban dispersos por todo el campo, comiendo, bebiendo y festejando el gran botín que habían conseguido en el territorio filisteo y en el de Judá. 17David los atacó al amanecer y los combatió hasta la tarde del día siguiente. Los únicos que lograron escapar fueron cuatrocientos muchachos que huyeron en sus camellos. 18David pudo recobrar todo lo que los amalecitas se habían robado, y también rescató a sus dos esposas. 19Nada les faltó del botín, ni grande ni pequeño, ni hijos ni hijas, ni ninguna otra cosa de lo que les habían quitado. 20David también se apoderó de todas las ovejas y vacas. La gente llevaba todo al frente y pregonaba: «¡Este es el botín de David!».
21Luego David regresó al arroyo de Besor, donde se habían quedado los doscientos hombres que estaban demasiado cansados para seguirlo. Ellos salieron al encuentro de David y su gente, y David, por su parte, se acercó para saludarlos. 22Pero entre los que acompañaban a David había gente mala y perversa que reclamó:
—Estos no vinieron con nosotros, así que no vamos a darles nada del botín que recobramos. Que tome cada uno a su esposa y a sus hijos y que se vaya.
23—No hagan eso, mis hermanos —respondió David—. Fue el Señor quien nos lo dio todo, quien nos protegió y puso en nuestras manos a esa banda de saqueadores que nos había atacado. 24¿Quién va a estar de acuerdo con ustedes? Del botín participan tanto los que se quedan cuidando el bagaje como los que van a la batalla.
25Aquel día David estableció ese estatuto como ley en Israel, la cual sigue vigente hasta el día de hoy.
26Después de llegar a Siclag, David envió parte del botín a sus amigos que eran jefes de Judá, con este mensaje: «Aquí tienen un regalo del botín que rescatamos de los enemigos del Señor».
27Recibieron ese regalo los ancianos de Betel, Ramot del Néguev, Jatir, 28Aroer, Sifmot, Estemoa, 29Racal, las ciudades de Jeramel, las ciudades quenitas 30de Jormá, Borasán, Atac, 31y Hebrón, y los ancianos de todos los lugares donde David y sus hombres habían vivido.
David destroys the Amalekites
1David and his men reached Ziklag on the third day. Now the Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag and burned it, 2and had taken captive the women and everyone else in it, both young and old. They killed none of them, but carried them off as they went on their way.
3When David and his men reached Ziklag, they found it destroyed by fire and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive. 4So David and his men wept aloud until they had no strength left to weep. 5David’s two wives had been captured – Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel. 6David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God.
7Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelek, ‘Bring me the ephod.’ Abiathar brought it to him, 8and David enquired of the Lord, ‘Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?’
‘Pursue them,’ he answered. ‘You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue.’
9David and the six hundred men with him came to the Besor Valley, where some stayed behind. 10Two hundred of them were too exhausted to cross the valley, but David and the other four hundred continued the pursuit.
11They found an Egyptian in a field and brought him to David. They gave him water to drink and food to eat – 12part of a cake of pressed figs and two cakes of raisins. He ate and was revived, for he had not eaten any food or drunk any water for three days and three nights.
13David asked him, ‘Who do you belong to? Where do you come from?’
He said, ‘I am an Egyptian, the slave of an Amalekite. My master abandoned me when I became ill three days ago. 14We raided the Negev of the Kerethites, some territory belonging to Judah and the Negev of Caleb. And we burned Ziklag.’
15David asked him, ‘Can you lead me down to this raiding party?’
He answered, ‘Swear to me before God that you will not kill me or hand me over to my master, and I will take you down to them.’
16He led David down, and there they were, scattered over the countryside, eating, drinking and revelling because of the great amount of plunder they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from Judah. 17David fought them from dusk until the evening of the next day, and none of them got away, except four hundred young men who rode off on camels and fled. 18David recovered everything the Amalekites had taken, including his two wives. 19Nothing was missing: young or old, boy or girl, plunder or anything else they had taken. David brought everything back. 20He took all the flocks and herds, and his men drove them ahead of the other livestock, saying, ‘This is David’s plunder.’
21Then David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow him and who were left behind at the Besor Valley. They came out to meet David and the men with him. As David and his men approached, he asked them how they were. 22But all the evil men and troublemakers among David’s followers said, ‘Because they did not go out with us, we will not share with them the plunder we recovered. However, each man may take his wife and children and go.’
23David replied, ‘No, my brothers, you must not do that with what the Lord has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiding party that came against us. 24Who will listen to what you say? The share of the man who stayed with the supplies is to be the same as that of him who went down to the battle. All shall share alike.’ 25David made this a statute and ordinance for Israel from that day to this.
26When David reached Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to the elders of Judah, who were his friends, saying, ‘Here is a gift for you from the plunder of the Lord’s enemies.’
27David sent it to those who were in Bethel, Ramoth Negev and Jattir; 28to those in Aroer, Siphmoth, Eshtemoa 29and Rakal; to those in the towns of the Jerahmeelites and the Kenites; 30to those in Hormah, Bor Ashan, Athak 31and Hebron; and to those in all the other places where he and his men had roamed.
