1The sayings of King Lemuel – an inspired utterance his mother taught him.
2Listen, my son! Listen, son of my womb!
Listen, my son, the answer to my prayers!
3Do not spend your strength31:3 Or wealth on women,
your vigour on those who ruin kings.
4It is not for kings, Lemuel –
it is not for kings to drink wine,
not for rulers to crave beer,
5lest they drink and forget what has been decreed,
and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.
6Let beer be for those who are perishing,
wine for those who are in anguish!
7Let them drink and forget their poverty
and remember their misery no more.
8Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
9Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.
Epilogue: the wife of noble character
1031:10 Verses 10-31 are an acrostic poem, the verses of which begin with the successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet. A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
11Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
12She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
13She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands.
14She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.
15She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her female servants.
16She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
18She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
19In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.
21When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
24She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
26She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
27She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
29‘Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.’
30Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31Honour her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

현숙한 아내
10누가 현숙한 아내를 얻겠느냐? 그녀는 진주보다 더 소중하다.
11그런 여자의 남편은 아내를 믿기 때문에 아무것도 부족한 것이 없을 것이다.
12그런 여자는 일평생 남편에게 선을 행하고 남편을 해치지 않는다.
13그녀는 양털과 삼을 구해 부지런히 일하며
14상선처럼 먼 데서 양식을 가져오고
15날이 밝기도 전에 일찍 일어나서 가족들을 위해 아침 식사를 준비하며 여종에게 할 일을 일러 주고
16나가서 밭을 보고 생각해 두었다가 그것을 사며 자기가 번 돈으로 포도원을 만들고
17언제나 강인하고 근면하며 열심히 일한다.
18그녀는 자기가 하는 일이 유익한 줄 알고 밤 늦게까지 일을 하며
19손수 물레질을 하여 실을 뽑고 베를 짜며
20가난하고 불쌍한 사람들을 도와준다.
21그녀는 모든 가족에게 입힐 따뜻한 옷을 마련해 놓았으므로 겨울이 닥쳐도 염려하지 않는다.
22그녀는 자기 침실을 아름답게 꾸미며 아름답고 고운 모시 옷과 자색 옷을 입는다.
23그리고 그 남편도 지도급 인사로 알려져 존경을 받게 된다.
24그녀는 옷과 허리띠를 만들어 상인들에게 넘기기도 한다.
25그녀는 능력과 품위가 있고 31:25 또는 ‘후일을 웃으며’앞날을 걱정하지 않으며
26말을 지혜롭고 친절하게 하고
27자기 집안 일을 잘 보살피며 놀고 먹지 않는다.
28그 자녀들은 자기 어머니를 고맙게 생각하며 그 남편도 그녀에게
29“세상에는 훌륭한 여성들이 많이 있지만 당신은 그 중에서도 가장 위대한 여성이오” 하고 칭찬한다.
30고운 것도 거짓되고 아름다운 것도 헛되지만 두려운 마음으로 여호와를 섬기는 여성은 칭찬을 받을 것이다.
31그녀는 자기가 행한 일에 대한 보상을 받고 모든 사람들에게 칭찬을 받을 것이다.
