To all God’s holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons1:1 The word deacons refers here to Christians designated to serve with the overseers/elders of the church in a variety of ways; similarly in Romans 16:1 and 1 Tim. 3:8,12.:

Thanksgiving and prayer
3I thank my God every time I remember you. 4In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
7It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. 8God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
9And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ – to the glory and praise of God.
Paul’s chains advance the gospel
12Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters,1:12 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family; also in verse 14; and in 3:1, 13, 17; 4:1, 8, 21. that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. 13As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard1:13 Or whole palace and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 14And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.
15It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defence of the gospel. 17The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 18But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.
Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, 19for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.1:19 Or vindication; or salvation 20I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. 21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labour for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, 26so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.
Life worthy of the gospel
27Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit,1:27 Or in one spirit striving together as one for the faith of the gospel 28without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved – and that by God. 29For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, 30since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.

2Io prego che Dio, nostro Padre, e il Signore Gesù Cristo diano a ciascuno di voi le più grandi benedizioni e la pace nel vostro cuore e nella vostra vita. 3Ogni volta che mi ricordo di voi, ringrazio il mio Dio. 4Quando prego per voi, il mio cuore si riempie di gioia 5per tutto lʼaiuto che mi avete dato nel diffondere il Vangelo di Cristo dal giorno in cui lʼavete conosciuto fino ad ora. 6Sono sicuro che Dio, che ha cominciato in voi la sua opera, vi aiuterà a crescere nella sua grazia fino a completare questa sua opera in voi il giorno in cui Gesù Cristo tornerà.
Parole dʼaffetto
7È naturale che provi questi sentimenti nei vostri confronti, perché voi avete un posto particolare nel mio cuore. Infatti, voi tutti avete partecipato con me alle benedizioni di Dio, sia quando ero in prigione che quando ero libero e difendevo la verità, parlando agli altri di Cristo. 8Dio solo sa quanto è profondo il mio amore per voi e quanto desidero rivedervi, con lo stesso affetto di Gesù Cristo. 9La mia preghiera per voi è questa: il vostro amore aumenti sempre più e allo stesso tempo maturino in voi la sensibilità e la conoscenza spirituale, 10in modo che possiate sempre distinguere chiaramente la differenza fra il bene e il male, perché siate sinceri e irreprensibili da adesso fino a quando il nostro Signore tornerà. 11Che possiate sempre fare quelle azioni giuste e buone che dimostrano che siete figli di Dio, perché ciò porterà gloria e lode al Signore.
12E voglio che sappiate questo, cari fratelli; ogni cosa che mi è accaduta ha contribuito al progresso del Vangelo. 13Perché tutti quanti qui intorno a me, compresi i soldati del palazzo del governatore, sanno che sono prigioniero semplicemente perché sono cristiano. 14E grazie al fatto che sono prigioniero, la maggior parte dei cristiani del luogo non ha più paura della prigione! In qualche modo la mia pazienza li ha rincuorati e si sono fatti più coraggiosi che mai nel parlare agli altri di Cristo.
15Alcuni, è vero, predicano il Vangelo di Cristo solo perché sono invidiosi e in polemica con me. Vogliono farsi la reputazione di predicatori coraggiosi! Ma altri lo fanno con sincerità 16-17e predicano perché mi amano, perché sanno che il Signore mi ha portato qui per servirsi di me per difendere la verità. Invece, quelli che predicano per farmi ingelosire pensano che con il loro successo aumenteranno i miei dispiaceri mentre sono qui in prigione. 18Ma che importa, per qualsiasi motivo lo facciano, rimane il fatto che la buona notizia di Cristo viene predicata ed io ne sono felice!
Ecco perché devo continuare a vivere
19Sono felice perché so che, siccome voi pregate per me e lo Spirito di Gesù Cristo mi assiste, tutto ciò che mi accade sarà per la mia liberazione. 20Infatti vivo nella ferma convinzione e nella speranza che non dovrò mai vergognarmi di niente, ma ora come sempre sarò pronto a parlare di Cristo senza peli sulla lingua, esaltandolo sia con la vita che con la morte. 21Per me infatti vivere significa predicare Cristo e morire è tutto un guadagno! 22Ma se vivere mi darà più occasioni di portare la gente a Cristo, allora non so davvero che cosa sia meglio, se vivere o morire! 23Sono messo alle strette; da una parte desidero lasciare questa vita per essere con Cristo: quanto sarei più felice che restare qui! 24Ma dallʼaltra capisco che per voi è molto più utile che rimanga quaggiù. 25Cʼè ancora bisogno di me, perciò sono certo che resterò sulla terra ancora per un poʼ, per aiutarvi a progredire e perché abbiate la gioia che viene dalla fede. 26Così, quando tornerò di nuovo a trovarvi, vi farò felici ed avrete una ragione di più per glorificare Gesù Cristo che mi ha protetto.
27Ma, qualsiasi cosa mi succeda, ricordate sempre di vivere come si addice a dei veri credenti in modo che, sia che vi riveda o no, possa continuare a sapere che restate ben fermi in uno stesso spirito e che lottate uniti per la fede che nasce dal Vangelo, 28senza nessun timore, qualunque cosa facciano i vostri nemici. In questo essi riconosceranno la prova della loro rovina, ma per voi sarà un chiaro segno che Dio è con voi e vi ha dato la salvezza. 29Perché, non soltanto avete ricevuto il privilegio di credere in Cristo, ma anche di soffrire per lui. 30Stiamo sostenendo insieme la stessa lotta. Voi mi avete già visto lottare per Cristo in passato ed ancora adesso, come ben sapete, mi trovo nel bel mezzo di una grande e terribile lotta.
