Miriam and Aaron oppose Moses
1Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite. 2‘Has the Lord spoken only through Moses?’ they asked. ‘Hasn’t he also spoken through us?’ And the Lord heard this.
3(Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.)
4At once the Lord said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, ‘Come out to the tent of meeting, all three of you.’ So the three of them went out. 5Then the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud; he stood at the entrance to the tent and summoned Aaron and Miriam. When the two of them stepped forward, 6he said, ‘Listen to my words:
‘When there is a prophet among you,
I, the Lord, reveal myself to them in visions,
I speak to them in dreams.
7But this is not true of my servant Moses;
he is faithful in all my house.
8With him I speak face to face,
clearly and not in riddles;
he sees the form of the Lord.
Why then were you not afraid
to speak against my servant Moses?’
9The anger of the Lord burned against them, and he left them.
10When the cloud lifted from above the tent, Miriam’s skin was leprous12:10 The Hebrew for leprous was used for various diseases affecting the skin. – it became as white as snow. Aaron turned towards her and saw that she had a defiling skin disease, 11and he said to Moses, ‘Please, my lord, I ask you not to hold against us the sin we have so foolishly committed. 12Do not let her be like a stillborn infant coming from its mother’s womb with its flesh half eaten away.’
13So Moses cried out to the Lord, ‘Please, God, heal her!’
14The Lord replied to Moses, ‘If her father had spat in her face, would she not have been in disgrace for seven days? Confine her outside the camp for seven days; after that she can be brought back.’ 15So Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on till she was brought back.
16After that, the people left Hazeroth and camped in the Desert of Paran.

Vezi și Gen. 2:13, unde este menționată țara Cuș din SE Mesopotamiei, și Hab. 3:17, unde Cușan și Midian sunt triburi aflate în vecinătatea Edomului. cu care se căsătorise (pentru că el se căsătorise cu o femeie cușită). 2Ei ziceau: „Oare numai prin Moise a vorbit Domnul? N‑a vorbit și prin noi?“ Domnul a auzit ce spuneau.
3Moise era un om foarte blând3 Sensul termenului ebraic este acela de sărman, umil, de aici probabil sensul de smerit, blând. Vezi Țef. 2:3, pentru o contextualizare a termenului., mai blând decât orice om de pe fața pământului.
4Deodată Domnul le‑a zis lui Moise, lui Aaron și lui Miriam:
– Ieșiți toți trei la Cortul Întâlnirii!
Și cei trei au ieșit. 5Atunci Domnul S‑a coborât într‑un stâlp de nor și i‑a chemat pe Aaron și pe Miriam; amândoi au ieșit în față.
6El le‑a zis:
– Ascultați cuvintele Mele:
când este un profet între voi,
Eu, Domnul, Mă fac cunoscut lui în vedenii
și îi vorbesc în vise.
7Nu tot așa este și cu robul Meu Moise;
el este credincios în toată casa Mea.
8Cu el vorbesc gură către gură,
clar, nu prin cuvântări enigmatice.
El vede înfățișarea Domnului.
Cum de nu v‑ați temut deci să vorbiți împotriva robului Meu, împotriva lui Moise?
9Mânia Domnului s‑a aprins împotriva lor și El S‑a îndepărtat. 10Când norul s‑a îndepărtat de pe Cortul Întâlnirii, iată că Miriam avea lepră10 Ebr.: tsara’, un verb la participiu din care derivă substantivul tsara’at (termen care, prin intermediul LXX, a ajuns să fie redat în versiunile moderne prin lepră). Majoritatea studiilor lexicale și medicale au ajuns însă la concluzia că termenul tradus în mod tradițional cu lepră se referă la o varietate de afecțiuni/infecții ale pielii, care pot fi contagioase sau nu. Acestea pot include Boala lui Hansen (lepra modernă, provocată de bacilul Mycobacterium leprae), dar și o serie de alte diagnostice moderne, cum ar fi: psoriazis, vitiligo, râie, dermatită seboreică, precum și alte tipuri de infecții datorate micozelor cutanate (ciupercile de piele) [peste tot în verset]., ca zăpada. Aaron s‑a întors spre Miriam și iată că ea avea lepră.
11Atunci Aaron i‑a zis lui Moise:
– Te rog, stăpânul meu, nu ne pedepsi pentru un păcat pe care l‑am făcut așa de nebunește. 12Nu lăsa ca ea să fie ca un copil născut mort, a cărui carne este pe jumătate mistuită când iese din pântecul mamei lui.
13Moise a strigat către Domnul, zicând:
– O Dumnezeule, Te rog, vindec‑o!
14Dar Domnul i‑a răspuns lui Moise:
– Dacă tatăl ei ar fi scuipat‑o în față, n‑ar fi fost ea făcută de rușine timp de șapte zile? Să fie deci închisă afară din tabără timp de șapte zile, iar după aceea poate fi primită din nou.
15Astfel Miriam a fost închisă în afara taberei timp de șapte zile. Poporul n‑a plecat mai departe până ce Miriam n‑a fost primită din nou. 16După aceea poporul a plecat din Hațerot și și‑a așezat tabăra în pustia Paran.
